Beep, beep, beep.
It was the sound of the life-support machine, with the hoses attached to a fragile five-year-old girl. She lay weak on the bed.
On the other side was Alex, holding her tiny fragile hand. This was his daughter, Veronica. He had never set eyes on her before. until now. And the first time he saw her, it was on this cold hospital bed. He had already told Cobra to lock Mason up.
He couldn’t help but shed tears as he stared at his daughter.
“Oh God… I caused this. I shouldn’t have left. Oh, my daughter…”
Kate embraced him from the side, hugging him gently.
“It is not your fault she is sick. You have already explained why you left. It’s nobody’s fault. Don’t blame yourself.”
Since Alex became the God of War Marshal, he had never once shed a tear. Even when a bullet struck him right in the chest, he hadn’t flinched and killed many enemies with it . His followers were shocked back then, also he survived it.
But what he was facing now hurt more than any bullet. He cried helplessly, not knowing if he could survive this pain should sickness take his daughter away.
Thud!.
The door suddenly flung open, and a doctor entered. A bald man in his early fifties.
“What… are you still here crying, while your daughter might die tomorrow!” the doctor barked.
Alex flared up instantly and turned to the doctor like he could swallow him alive. The doctor looked at him and sneered.
“Is this your husband? Is he here to pay, or just to join you in crying while your daughter dies in the ward?”
Alex’s voice thundered.
“Say anything rubbish to my family again..I swear I will rip your mouth off!”
The doctor burst into mocking laughter.
“This is your husband? Threatening people because he can’t pay? Let me tell you, if you fail to make your payment today, I will throw your useless daughter outside and let her die in the street!”
Alex couldn’t take it anymore. He stepped forward, ready to teach him a lesson, but Kate rushed to stop him.
“Look, we shouldn’t offend him. Just like I told you, our daughter was diagnosed with leukemia three months ago. They found a bone marrow match, but the surgery costs three million. Let’s beg the doctor to perform the surgery while we look for the money. Otherwise, our daughter might die!” Kate started crying.
Alex’s face twisted with rage.
“Beg? I beg no one. And he’s not even worthy of performing surgery on my daughter!”
Smack!
Before the doctor could react, Alex’s kick landed, sending him flying back. He slammed against the wall.
Splash!
Blood trickled from the doctor’s mouth.
“You… you kicked me? Consider your daughter dead!” he spat angrily and stormed out.
Kate’s eyes filled with worry. She turned to Alex.
“What have you done? You need to calm down! How will we save our daughter now?”
Alex only gave her a cold stare, then smiled faintly and pulled out his phone. He made a call.
“Summon me the world’s top leukemia specialists right now—the number one, with the highest successful surgery rate.”
He hung up. Kate stood frozen, wondering what was going on. When Mason’s men were massacred earlier, Kate had been unconscious, so she didn’t know the true power her husband carried. She thought he was bluffing.
“Mom!”
A small, fragile voice came from the bed. So faint, yet enough to make Kate’s heart jump. She swiftly turned back. It was Veronica. She had woken up from the noise.
“Are you okay, my baby?” Kate asked, checking her body.
Veronica, though weak, spotted the man staring at her with broken eyes, tears streaming down his face. She recognized him immediately. She had seen his face many times in photos her mother held. Photos her mother would sob over, whispering that she missed him. Veronica knew this man was her father, and now he stood right before her.
“Mom… are you seeing this too? Or am I the only one seeing Father… because I think I’m about to die,” she whimpered.
Alex broke completely, collapsing beside her.
Kate, choking through tears, said softly, “Yes… I can see him too. He is your father. And you are not dying.”
Alex scooped up the girl’s hand.
“It’s me, my baby. I am your father, and I am right here.”
“FATHER!” she cried, her voice trembling. She had never thought she’d see him, let alone call his name.
“Where have you been all this time? My mom suffered. She always cried because of you. Bad people always beat her. Kids abused me, saying I had no dad…that my dad was dead. Why did you leave us?”
Her words tore Alex apart. He cried uncontrollably. Even a heart of stone would shatter hearing this.
His heart ached as he knelt, pleading.
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have left. I was called for military duty… I lost contact. I’m sorry.” He spoke to her as if she was an adult.
“I swear, I will never leave you again. I will be by your side forever. I’m back for good.”
His daughter wept, “Don’t leave again, please!”
“I’m here,” Alex promised. “I will never leave you again.”
After a long, emotional moment, they reconciled.
“Yaaah! My father is back!” she cheered.
Kate smiled, trying to calm her so she wouldn’t hurt herself.
Alex chuckled and said, “What do you want? Tell me anything. Whatever you want, I will get it. Just name it.”
“Toys! Mom hasn’t been able to afford any. I have always wanted toys,” she said.
“No problem.”
Alex made a call. Five minutes later, a man in a suit arrived carrying bags of toys, dropping them on the floor.
Veronica gasped, “How many is this, Father?”
“Thirty. Is that too few? Let me order thirty more.”
“No! That’s too much,” Kate and Veronica said together, laughing.
Veronica was overjoyed. Inside the pile was a Barbie doll and a medical set she had always dreamed of. She clapped her tiny hands and sang happily.
But then, her face changed color and immediately went pale.
Splash!
She vomited black blood.
Alex’s pupils contracted sharply.
“Veronica! Veronica!” Kate screamed as their daughter went limp and unresponsive.
