Lexi Thompson stood before the mirror, her gaze tracing the contours of a face that seemed to belong to someone else. Her once bright smile now a distant memory, hid behind a mask of despair. The faint scars above her left eyebrow and the slight droop of her shoulders told stories she wished to forget.
"Lexi, get downstairs!" her stepmother, Victoria yelled from the kitchen, shattering the fragile calm.
Lexi signed and turned away from the mirror. She has lost count of the days since her mother's passing. Time blurred in an endless cycle of grief and loneliness. Her reflection showed a person she barely recognised - a shadow of her former self.
As she descended the stairs, Lexi's stepsister Sophia glared at her from the couch.
"Finally decided to join us huh?" Sophia snapped. Her voice dripping with malice.
Lexi ignored her and entered the kitchen, where Victoria was preparing breakfast. The aroma of scrambled eggs and toast filled the air, but Lexi's stomach churned with anxiety.
"Take a seat Lexi," Victoria ordered, her voice cold. "You're not needed anywhere else.
Lexi complied, feeling like a stranger in her own home. The kitchen once filled with warmth and laughter now felt cold and oppressive.
"Your father has arranged a meeting for you," Victoria announced, her eyes avoiding Lexi's.
"What kind of meeting?" Lexi asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Victoria's smile sent shivers down Lexi's spine.
"Your father will explain," Victoria said, her tone dripping with malice. "Just remember Lexi, you owe us. You owe us for everything we've done foe you."
Lexi's heart sank. What did Victoria mean?
The doorbell rang, interrupting the tension.
"I'll get it," Sophia said jumping up.
As Sophia left the kitchen, Lexi exchanged a wary glance with Victoria.
"Who is it?" Lexi asked.
Victoria's smile grew wider.
"Your future," Victoria whispered.
Sophia opened the door, her expression expectant. "Yes?"
"Good morning," Mr Jenkins said, his voice formal. "I'm here to see your father."
Sophia stepped aside, allowing Mr Jenkins to enter.
"Father, Mr Jenkins is here," She called.
Lexi's father emerged from the room, wiping his hand on a towel. "Ah, Mr Jenkins welcome."
Mr Jenkins nodded, "Good morning. I've come on behalf of my employer.
"Victoria appeared at her husband's side, her expression curious and expectant.
"Do come in Mr Jenkins. What brings you here today?"
Mr Jenkins cleared his throat. "My employer has proposed a union between your family and ours. A marriage to be precise."
Lexi's heart skipped a bit. Marriage? Was this what Victoria was talking about earlier on?
"And if i may ask, which of my daughters are you interested in?" Lexi's father questioned.
"Urh, according to what i'm aware of, it should be Miss Sophia." Mr Jenkins stated. "My employer believes she would make an excellent bride."
Lexi's father beamed. "We are honoured. Who is the groom?"
Mr Jenkins hesitated. "My employer prefers to keep that information private for now. But his name is Mr Blackwood."
Lexi's father's smile dropped, realising that the marriage was between the owner of a well known firm which happens to be an old man.
"Wow, that's great," He said amidst closed teeth.
Victoria exchanged a nervous glance with Lexi's father.
Mr Jenkins handed Lexi's father a folder. "All the arrangements are inside. The wedding will take place in two weeks.
"Lexi's father nodded eagerly. "We'll make sure everything is ready."
Victoria smiled, her eyes shinning with excitement. "This is a wonderful opportunity for our family."
Sophia looked puzzled." But you still haven't said who this Mr Blackwood is."
Mr Jenkins' expression remained neutral. "My employer will reveal that information in due time."
As Mr Jenkins departed, Lexi's family exchanged nervous glances.
"In the kitchen Victoria whispered, "We need to tell Lexi."
Lexi's father nodded. "She would have to pretend to be Sophia."
Lexi's heart sank. What were they planning?
"Lexi, come here," her father called.
Lexi entered the kitchen, sensing something was off.
"Lexi you'll pretend to be Sophia," Victoria said, her voice firm.
Lexi's eyes widened. "What?" "Why?"
Victoria's expression turned cold. "You'll do as we say, Lexi. This is for our family's benefit."
Lexi's father nodded, "You're the only one who can save our family's reputation and secure our future."
Lexi felt a surge of resentment. "And what about Sophia? Doesn't she have a say in this?"
Victoria scoffed. "How on earth will i allow my only daughter get married to an old rich man, at least you should be celebrating that you are finally doing something meaningful to this family."
"I don't care," Lexi replied.
Lexi's father stepped closer, his eyes menacing. "Listen, Lexi. You will do as we say... You will pretend to be Sophia and marry this man."
Lexi lifted her eyes to her dad. She wasn't believing what she was hearing. How could he have changed so much.
Bracing up, she shook her head, fear creeping in. "No, father. I won't do it. How could you even think of cheating someone without thinking about the consequences. When you knew you weren't interested in giving them your favourite daughter, why did u agree to it."
His face twisted in anger. "You will or you'll suffer the consequences. You'll be cut off from the family and you'll never see your mother's inheritance."
Lexi's heart racing, she tried to stand firm. "I don't care. I won't ruin my life for your benefit."
Victoria intervened, her voice cold. "Think of your sister, Lexi. If you don't do this, Sophia would be the one to suffer. We can't let her go through the discomfort of marrying a stranger, an old man at that.
Lexi's eyes narrowed."You're using me to protect Sophia, but you will still benefit from this arrangement. I'm always the one sacrificing for Sophia, why can't she do so for the family.?"
Her father's expression darkened. "That's not your concern. You concern is doing what you're told. Do you understand?"
Lexi nodded, feeling trapped with no escape.
