THE ARRANGED MARRIAGE

1000 Words
Days passed in a blur as Lexi's family prepared for the wedding. Lexi felt like a pawn in their game, forced to pretend to be Sophia. The weight of the deception suffocated her. One evening, Victoria handed Lexi a dress. "Try this on. It's your wedding gown." Lexi hesitated, but Victoria's glare made her comply. As she changed, Lexi caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror. The elegant gown transformed her into Sophia the perfect bride. "Perfect," Victoria said, inspecting Lexi's reflection. You'll make a beautiful Sophia." Lexi's resentment simmered. You're enjoying this, aren't you? Using me to secure your family's future." Victoria's smile was icy. "I'm doing what needs to be done, you're just a means to an end." The next day, Lexi's father presented her with a contract. "Sign this," he ordered. Lexi scanned the document, her heart sinking. It was a prenuptial agreement, stripping her of all rights. "This is unfair," Lexi protested. Her father's expression turned ugly. "Sign it or you'll regret it." Lexi signed, feeling trapped. Two days before the wedding, Lexi's anxiety peaked. She couldn't sleep, her mind racing with thought of the unknown groom and the life she was about to embark on. As she lay in bed, she heard a knock on her door. "Come in," Lexi said, expecting Victoria or her father. But it was Sophia, her stepsister. Sophia stared at Lexi, her eyes narrowing at her. "So the whole issue is true." Lexi took a deep breath, explaining the whole situation. Sophia's eyes sparkled with amusement. "You're pretending to be me. How quaint." Lexi's guilt turned to irritation. "It's not my choice, Sophia. Mother and Father are forcing me." Sophia chuckled. "You're so gullible, Lexi. You'll do anything to please them, won't you?" Lexi's anger flared. "You have no idea what's going on." Sophia's smile grew wider. "Oh, I think I do. "You're sacrificing yourself for our family's benefit. How noble." Lexi's resentment simmered. "You're enjoying this, aren't you?" Sophia shrugged. "Why shouldn't I? You're taking the fall for me. I get to live my life, while you're stuck in a loveless marriage." Lexi felt sting from Sophia's word. Sophia's laughter echoed through the room. "You're really going to go through with this, aren't you? Marrying some old, rich guy for our family's benefit." Lexi's face burned with anger. "You have no right to judge me." Sophia's smile never wavered. "Oh, I have every right. After all you're pretending to be me." Lexi stood up, her patience wearing thin. "You're just mad because you're not the one getting married." Sophia's eyes sparkled. "Mad? I'm thrilled. You're saving me from a life of misery." Lexi's anger boiled over. "You're heartless, Sophia." Sophia shrugged. "Just practical. You're doing what you're good at - sacrificing yourself for others. Sophia walked out of the room with a smirk on his face. A day before the wedding, Lexi's family busied themselves with final preparations. Lexi was tasked with packing her belongings for the move to the Blackwood estate. As she folded her clothes, Sophia sauntered into the room. "Last-minutes jitters, Lexi?" Sophia taunted. Lexi ignored her, focusing on the task. "Make sure you don't forget anything," Victoria instructed, hovering nearby. "You won't be returning here." Lexi's heart ached, knowing she was leaving behind everything familiar. Later, Lexi's father handed her a small, intricately carved box. "What's this?" Lexi asked. "A gift from your husband-to-be," he replied. "Open it tomorrow, after the ceremony." Lexi's curiosity piqued, she tucked the box into her luggage. The evening before the wedding, Lexi's anxiety grew. She couldn't shake off the feeling of unease. As she continued packing her belongings, her mind keeps wandering to the unknown life ahead. Suddenly, a knock on the door broke the silence. "Come in," Lexi said. Sophia entered, a sly smile spreading across her face. "Last-minute advice, sister? Lexi asked, wary. Sophia chuckled. "Just remember, Lexi, you're nothing but a pawn in the game." Lexi's answer flared, but she kept her cool. Sophia's words cut deep. "You're trading your freedom for wealth and status. How pathetic." Lexi's anger flared. "You wouldn't understand. You've always had everything handed to you." Sophia sneered. "And you have always been the obedient one, Lexi. The perfect little sacrifice." Lexi's hands clenched into a fists. "Shut up, Sophia." Sophia chuckled. "Oh I'm just getting started." Victoria entered the room, her expression stern. "Enough, Sofia. Leave Lexi alone." Sofia smirked. "Until tomorrow, stepsister. As Sophia left, Lexi felt a mix of relief and dread. Lexi collapsed onto her bed, exhausted from Sophia's verbal barrage. She couldn't shake off the feeling that she was making a terrible mistake. Just then, Lexi heard a faint knock on the door. "Come in," she said softly. Her father entered, his expression stern. "Lexi, the car will arrive at 9am tomorrow. Be ready." Lexi nodded, feeling a surge of resentment. "Father, can't we talk about this?" Lexi pleaded. "I don't want to marry someone i've never met." Her father's expression darkened. "You'll do as you're told, Lexi. This secures our family's future." "But what about my future?" Lexi protested. "What about my happiness?" Her father scoffed. "Happiness is a luxury we can't afford. "You'll learn to adapt." Lexi anger flared. "You're sacrificing me for your own gain. You don't care about me at all." Her father's face reddened. "How dare you! I've provided for you your entire life. You owe me this." Lexi's voice trembled. "I owe you? You've never been there for me. You've never listened. You've never given me love or understanding. Just orders and expectations." "Her father's face twisted in disgust. "Love? You want Love? You'll learn to love your duty, Lexi. That's what matters." The hurt and anger swirling inside Lexi threatened to consume her. "Why did mother marry you?" Lexi asked, her voice nearly above a whisper. Her father's eyes flashed with anger. "You mother knew her place. She did what was necessary for our family's survival. Lexi felt sorrowful.
