Roxanne Pierce:-
The early light illuminated my face and I groaned and opened my eyes to try and lift myself from the very uncomfortable spot, against my bike. When I did, I let out a hiss of pain and almost screamed but the bandages wrapped around my wounds distracted me.
I stared down at my stomach.
“What the hell?”
I had a piece of clean gauze around my ribs and another bandage on my palm, and the cuts in my arms were cleaned. Before I passed out, I remember seeing some dried blood; it was pretty much gone now, too.
I gently touched the bandage and tried to recall if any of these things had ever happened.
Nothing.
I only remember sitting where I am now, outside the gates of Iron Reapers compound, leaning against my father's motorcycle while those big metal gates were slammed in my face.
I looked up. They were still closed.
“Who treated me?”
I searched around, but there was no one outside. There was no one on the road behind me, only noises could be heard on the other side of the gates. I slowly got to my feet and immediately regretted it.
“Fuck.”
My ribs hurt. My head hurt. I felt like people used a hammer on my legs. I walked up to the gates, embraced the metal bars.
“Hello?”
Nothing.
I shook them more.
“Is anyone there?”
“Jesus Christ woman, some of us are coming down from a hangover.”
I walked, as another man came out. His blond hair was disheveled and he was holding a cup of coffee as though he had ruined my morning with me. I saw him last night.
“You.”
“Me.”
“Did you do this?”
I indicated to my bandages. He looked at them, and nearly choked on his coffee.
“Does my face look like that of a doctor?”
“Looks like you take your drink at 8 am”
“It's coffee.”
“I don't care. Who treated me?”
He leaned his back against the gate. “Doc.”
“Who?”
“Our doctor.”
I frowned. Do you have a doctor?
“Bikers, that's me, sweetheart, not immortal.”
An almost smile escaped itself, even though I did not intend it.
Almost.
Why has he helped me?”
“Well that's what doctors do, anyway.”
“Don't be an ass.”
Don't wake our gate at eight in the morning.
“Riot.”
A voice was heard from behind him.
The blond guy looking up at the sky, rolling his eyes. “What?”
It was a much bigger man who came up to me and I could see at once that it was the man who had stopped me from walking in last night.
“Leave her alone.”
“I'm being friendly.”
“How? You don't know!”
“That's hurtful, Tank.”
Tank glimpsed him and turned her gaze on me.
It's time to take a seat.”
I sat on concrete all night tonight.
“Then, sit on your bike.”
“Don't let me sit down, I want to find out who came out here and touched me while I was unconscious.”
“Doc treated you.”
“Who told him to?”
Neither man answered.
My eyes narrowed.
“Zane?”
Riot now found himself captivated by his coffee.
I pointed at him.
That face says it all to me.
In this is my face.”
“Was it Zane who sent him?”
“No.”
My chest dropped a little, I really didn't know why I'd been expecting anything to be different.
Tank responded more stoically. “When Doc was leaving he saw you lying out here and he wasn't going to let you bleed all over the pavement.”
“Oh.”
“So there's nothing Cross did about it?”
The voice was coming from behind them.
My tummy got hard.
Riot stepped aside.
As Zane walked toward the gates, Knox accompanied him, and he looked as if he'd spent the last 50 years waiting in line for the opportunity to finally get to the gates. His greyish-blue eyes moved to mine before lowering and looking at the new bandages.
“No,” Zane answered. “I didn't.”
I folded my arms and then right away I unfolded them as soon as my ribs complained.
“Good to know.”
“You asked.”
“And you answered.”
Zane was at the far side of the gate.
The whole thing seemed even more absurd with the metal bars in the middle of us.
Why don't you just get out of here, Pierce?”
Good morning to you too!
“Did you ask me a question?”
“And I'm ignoring it.”
Riot made a choking noise behind him.
Knox glanced him a stern look.
Zane's eyes didn't move as he stared at the person before him. I told you last night you aren't staying here.”
“Nor am I staying there.”
I pointed to something outside the gate.
“I'm staying here.”
“It's still Iron Reapers land.”
If so, phone the police.
Riot snorted.
Knox seemed to have taken a dim view on me.
Zane looked at me for a few seconds.
“Is this something you think is funny?”
“No.”
“Then leave.”
“Where?”
His jaw tightened.
I approached closer to the gate.
Where am I to go, Zane? Was there a revival of the Black Vampire's? Back to Darius? Will I have to apologise to him for breaking his sequence before he can complete it?
Nobody said anything.
Riot even broke into a smile.
“No matter where you go,” Zane finally responded. But one is not able to stay here.
“Why? Because Darius will come looking for me?”
“That's one reason.”
“Or, because you're throwing my precious race?”
His eyes hardened.
There it was.
I laughed bitterly.
“I knew it.”
“You fixed a championship race you got.”
“I lost one race.”
“You sold one.”
I didn't make any sale.”
Pierce, I want you to trust me in my compound. Why should I?” Zane asked.
“Since I arrived here in half a death!
“That doesn't mean I should trust you, it means that Creed hurt you.”
His words were cutting, for he was telling the truth, but I was hot headed enough to deny it.
“You really are an asshole.”
“Been called worse.”
“I'm sure.”
Riot quietly muttered, “I like her.”
Shut up," Knox said to him.
There was no time when Zane did not look at me.
“You would have had that race won.”
My anger paused.
“What?”
“I watched you.”
“So?”
"But you were a little ahead of Vixen in the final stretch, you had a little more speed out of the corner and she couldn't catch you unless you gave her the way, and you did."
I stared at him.
“You noticed?”
I was aware that something was amiss.”
I swallowed, Zane had noticed.
“You can see that I slowed down?”
You didn't slow down, you practically gave her the finish line.”
“That isn't what happened.”
“That's exactly what happened.”
“There was nothing I could do.”
“There is always a choice.”
Though my eyes burned I refused to cry.
“Young lady.”
I looked at the strange voice.
There was an older man with them.
He took a look at my bandages.
It is supposed that you're to be resting.”
I stared at him.
“You're?”
“Elias Mercer.”
“You treated me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He shrugged. “You needed help.”
“That's it?”
"What did you think would happen? An invoice?”
Riot laughed. Even Tank's lips trembled.
I eyed Doc suspiciously. “Have you given me anything?”
“Pain medication.”
My eyes widened. “You drugged me?”
“Painkillers, Roxanne. If I drugged you we wouldn't be having this conversation.”
“Could've asked.”
“You were unconscious.”
“Exactly!”
Doc sighed. "When you are knocked out cold and lying next to a motorcyclist, I’ll come up to you and ask if you grant me the permission, your highness."
“Thank you.”
“It's sarcasm, In case you didn't know that."
“So was I.”
Riot grinned. “Can we keep her?”
“No,” Zane and Knox replied in unison.
I glared at Zane.
"I don't want to be kept."
“Good, we're getting somewhere then.
“God, I hate you.”
“The feeling is becoming increasingly mutual.”
