CHAPTER SIX : KNOX

1518 Words
The apartment was quiet once the Council enforcers had swept Damien and his guests out. Rain still streaked down the windows, a soft curtain of silver that reflected the chaos of the last hour. My jacket clung to me, heavy with water, and my hands still smelled like rain, leather, and the faint vanilla of Riley’s lotion. But nothing mattered—not the cold, not the damp, not the stares of the few neighbors peeking through blinds. All that mattered were the children in my arms and the woman standing just a few feet away, shaking but unbroken. I set the twins gently on the couch. Harley rubbed her eyes sleepily, curling into herself like a tiny wolf pup. Hunter yawned, stretching his arms above his head before looking at me with that same piercing silver gaze. It hit me again, the way I could feel the bond through them. The pull was undeniable, fierce, protective, and raw. Every instinct I had screamed to claim them, to protect them, to never let anyone—especially Damien—touch them again. Riley didn’t move from the doorway. Her eyes were wide, green flecks glinting under the dim light, lips pressed together in a line of steel. I wanted to cross the room and take her in my arms, but the memory of her pulling away five years ago, screaming at me, burned hotter than any desire I had. I had lost her once—I would not lose her again. “I need you to hear me,” I said, voice low, rough like gravel. “You don’t understand. I never stopped—” “Knox,” she cut me off sharply, stepping forward. Her voice was steady, commanding even, but her hands trembled slightly. “Don’t you dare start with that crap. Not now. Not with them in the room.” She gestured toward the twins, who were now playing quietly on the couch, toys scattered around them. I swallowed, letting the words catch in my throat. Damn her. Even after five years, she still had the power to control me with a look. “Fine,” I said, backing off a step. “We do this your way.” Riley’s chest rose and appeared rep breath, as if she were fighting a war inside her. I wanted to know what she was thinking, but I didn’t dare ask—not yet. Not when the bond was screaming at me so loud I could barely stand. “You’re going to leave, aren’t you, slightly, and wolf, almost a guide. I froze. “I mean—after the Council leaves, after this… chaos,” she clarified. “You’re going to leave the kids and me, right? Just like before.” I felt something inside me twist. My wolf wanted to tear apart every piece of furniture in this apartment for even daring to suggest such a thing. My heart wanted to stop beating just so I could think, just so I could breathe long enough to form words. “I will not leave,” I said finally, my voice stronger than I expected. “Not ever. Not again.” She blinked, clearly unsure whether to believe me. “You said that five years ago.” “And I failed,” I admitted, every word tasting like iron. “But I will not fail again. Not with them. Not with you.” There was a long silence. Her gaze softened for a fraction of a second before hardening again. She wasn’t convinced—not yet. But I didn’t need her to be. Not tonight. Hunter had crawled into my lap again, tiny arms hugging me tightly. “Daddy, can we go outside?” he asked innocently, completely unaware of the tension in the room. “I want to ride the big bikes!” Harley nodded enthusiastically. “Yeah! Daddy take us for a ride! Please!” I couldn’t help the grin that split across my face. For the first time in years, the chaos didn’t feel like a storm—it felt like the world was finally turning toward something real, something I could protect. “Not tonight, little wolves,” I said, ruffling their hair. “But soon. Soon we ride.” Riley’s hands tightened around the couch cushions. I could feel her skepticism radiating off her like heat. “I have to call Damien,” she said, her voice clipped. “I need him out of here and I need him gone for good.” I nodded slowly. “I’ll make sure he never comes near you again.” She stared at me like she wanted to say more, but the twins interrupted before she could. “Daddy, are you gonna live here now?” Harley asked, bouncing slightly in her seat. “Yes, baby,” I said, my chest tightening. “I’m not leaving again.” Riley’s green really thought, searching for the lie she fully expected. I didn’t flinch. “You’re serious?” she asked. “As a heart attack,” I said, and damn it, I wanted to kiss her right there in front of the children. The sound of a car engine outside really thinks moment. It was low, menacing, and familiar—but it wasn’t my Harley. I froze. My wolf stirred. Big. Loud. Hungry. The kind of hunger that smelled like blood and iron. Riley stiffened beside me, sensing it too. Hunter crawled off my lap and peered toward the window. “Who is it, Daddy?” I walked slowly to the blinds, peering outside. Rain-slicked streets reflected the city lights in distowere rted ribbons. There was one car parked under the streetlamp—a sleek black vehicle, tinted windows, polished chrome glinting despite the rain. And I saw them. Two figures stepping out. Humans, but not normal humans. The scent hit me before I could even recognize their faces: rogue wolf scent. Damned rogue wolves, bred for violence, trained for infiltration, and they had a trail of lethal intent following them like fire. Riley gasped behind me, her hand gripping my arm. “Knox—” I didn’t need her to finish. I knew. They were here for the kids. My jaw went tight. My hands curled into fists. My wolf surged beneath my skin, stretching, pressing against the edge of control. I could feel my pupils dilate, senses sharpening beyond human limits. Rain dripped down my face, and every nerve in my body screamed for violence. “They’re here for them,” I said quietly, voice low, almost a growl. “And I’m going to make sure they leave with nothing but their teeth intact.” Riley stepped closer, her small hand brushing mine. “Knox, please—don’t—” “Don’t worry,” I said, voice rough. “I’ve got this.” But even as I said it, I knew I wasn’t entirely telling the truth. These weren’t ordinary rogues. They were smart, fast, and dangerous. They’d come prepared. And I had no idea how many more were waiting outside the city, watching, waiting. I turned to Riley, my gaze locking on hers. “Listen to me. No matter what happens, stay here. Stay with the kids. Do exactly what I tell you. Do not—under any circumstances—leave these lips pressed together, but she nodded. Chancesy clung to her skirt, Hunter hiding behind her legs. My hearta tore, seeing her so small, so vulnerable, and yet still so defiant. I didn’t wait another second. I grabbed my jacket, mythic and my wallet—everything I might need in chancesxt five minutes—and sprinted toward the door. My wolf surged forward, instincts slicing through my rational mind. The door slammed behind me, and I hit the stairwell two steps at a time. Rain plastered my hair to my skull, cold seeping through every layer. I could hear the twins calling my name faintly through the apartment, their voices distant, as if muffled by water and time. The rogues had moved faster than I expected. Two men stepped out from behind a delivery truck, blocking the alleyway. Muscular, armed, smirking with teeth that glinted under the streetlight. I stopped just short of them, wolf riding hot beneath my skin. “Back off,” I said. My voice wasn’t a threat—it was a promise. They laughed. “Blackthorn,” one said, stepping forward. “Alpha thinks he can terrified pack? We’ve been sent by someone who doesn’t care about your claims.” I felt my blood run hot. “Then you’ll die before you touch them,” I schanceshe rain fell harder, the city a blur of light and water. I shifted slightly, terrifiedlaws scrape against my palms, fangs pressing against my jaw. My wolf roared inside me, demanding c*****e, blood, and obedience. And then, from the shadows of the alley, a third figure apterrifiedll. Thin. Silent. Eyes glinting red under the streetlight. My heart stopped. Because I knew that face. And I knew exactly what they were capable of. The fight was about to start.
