A Fresh Start

First day on the job

I had a feeling that I was going to love working for her. also Carl had told me that she was pretty laid back and easy going. Is there any days that you can't work? she asked. well not really as long as I can leave by 5:00 p.m. on mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays because those nights I go to my GED classes, I replied. Well that shouldn't be a problem then because your hours are 9:00 to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, she said. I also paid $10 an hour and you get a 30 minute paid lunch break and I will have manuscripts for you to proofread and for those I pay you according to the manuscript and those you do at home, she had it. I smiled I was so excited. that sounds like a really good schedule, I told her. Okay then let me give you some paperwork so you can get it filled out and I will put it in your file, she said she walked over to a filing cabinet in her office. she reached in and pulled out some papers and then said, follow me and I will show you to your desk. I stood up and followed her into the front where I had first come in. okay AJ this is your domain you can rearrange your desk to suit your taste, she said as she waved her hands around. she handed me the paperwork that she had in her hand and I took it and sat down behind my desk to fill them out. just let me know when you get those finished and I will set you up with some work to do, she said and then she walked back into her office. I sat down at my desk and started filling out my paperwork. it didn't take too long and 15 minutes later I stepped into Mrs Williams'office to give her the paperwork I had filled out. Mrs Williams I finished with the paperwork that you gave me, I said as she looked up from her desk. oh please call me mary, Mrs Williams makes me sound so old, she said with a laugh. I laughed too at the thought. no problem mary, I said. okay AJ I will put these in your file. now let's get you busy on some stuff, she said walking back into my area. I followed her and she showed me how to put stuff into the computer, file papers, answer the phones and how to transfer people on the phone to her office. I got right to work and before I knew it it was 12:30 p.m. and time for lunch. Mary appeared in the doorway hey AJ I'm going to walk next door to the Chinese place would you like to join me? I was hungry and I do love Chinese so I told her yes and grabbed my purse. Mary locked up the office and we walked next door we were greeted by a little Chinese man dressed and a pair of black pants and a white button up dress shirt. oh hi Miss Mary it's good to see you, he said in a heavy accent as he showed us to our table. Mary and the man chatted back and forth like old friends. I later found out from Mary that she ate here all the time and she had been coming here for the last 3 years. our lunch over lunch we chatted about our lives I told her my whole life story and she told me about how she had gone through a nasty divorce due to her ex cheating on her. they didn't have any children and she said she probably never will. she was such a sweet person and I really felt like I was going to enjoy working with her. after lunch we went back to the office and Mary gave me a list of things she needed me to do so I was pretty busy for the rest of the afternoon. before I left for the day Mary walked up to my desk with a manuscript. AJ I have a manuscript that I need you to proofread and get back to me by friday, she said. sure Mary no problem, I told her as she handed me the manuscript. she had explained to me earlier how to make corrections. she told me the price that it was worth and I was so happy because it would be more than enough to pay for my divorce and when I got my first paycheck on Friday I was going to open up the savings account and checking account. I wanted to be able to say for a car and then my own place. I would love to be able to buy my own house so that way I could fix it up the way I wanted. at 5:00 p.m. I left work and headed to my GED class that night we were working on algebra which was something that I was not really good at. I was so glad when 8:00 p.m. rolled around because I was starving and I was wore out from not being used to working full-time and going to school at the same time but, I figured that after this week I will get used to it. I pulled into the driveway and pushed the garage door opener and pulled inside. I grabbed my school books my purse and the manuscript that very had given me to work on this week and headed into the house through the kitchen, I walked upstairs to my room and laid my stuff on the bed and slipped my shoes off and headed back down to the kitchen to find something to eat. when I got downstairs there was a note on the refrigerator that said, AJ I put you a plate of food in the microwave. I hope you had a good first day at work. see you in the morning. love you Joy. that was so sweet of Joy she was always a considerate of me I looked into the microwave and took my plate out and sat down at the kitchen bar. this dinner looks so good, it was meat love, mashed potatoes and green beans. Joy was such a wonderful cook and I loved it when she prepared meals for me. she was a sweetheart and she spoiled me rock. I was still trying to get used to it. she acted like the big sister that I never had. I finished my dinner and loaded my plate in the dishwasher and grabbed a glass of ice tea and headed to my room to get started on the manuscript that Mary had given me today. I got to my room and put on some pajamas and settled in the bed and began reading. after a while I looked at the clock and it was 11:00 p.m. and I was through with two chapters the manuscript. I laid it on my nightstand and turned out my light and drifted off to sleep
