As Sarah and Jack continued to spend time together, Sarah found herself unable to ignore the feelings she had for him. It was like no time had passed since they were teenagers in love, and every moment with Jack felt familiar and comfortable.
But Sarah also couldn't shake the feeling that maybe she was just seeing Jack through rose-colored glasses. After all, they had broken up for a reason all those years ago. Maybe they were just caught up in the excitement of seeing each other again, and the reality of a long-term relationship would be much harder.
One day, Sarah was taking a walk by herself, enjoying the peaceful surroundings of the hotel gardens, when she found herself lost in thought about Jack. As she walked, she realized that her old feelings for him were stronger than she had ever realized.
"I thought I was over him," she thought to herself. "But being with him again, it's like all those old feelings came flooding back. I can't deny it anymore - I still love him."
She thought back to their time in high school, the butterflies in her stomach every time Jack was near, the way his smile could light up her entire day. They had been young and naive back then, but Sarah couldn't help feeling like they had missed out on something special.
As she continued to walk, she let herself get lost in the memories. She remembered their first kiss, in the school courtyard after a football game. She remembered the way Jack had looked at her, like she was the only person in the world who mattered.
"I wish we could go back to that time," Sarah said aloud, not realizing she was speaking out loud until someone cleared their throat behind her.
Turning around, she saw Jack standing there with a small smile on his face.
"I couldn't help but overhear," he said. "And I have to admit, I feel the same way. Being with you again, it's like we never missed a beat."
Sarah's heart leapt in her chest at Jack's words. Was he feeling the same way she was? Did he still love her too?
As if reading her mind, Jack took a step closer and took her hand in his.
"Sarah, I don't want to rush into anything. But I also don't want to waste any more time. I love you, and I want to see where this goes. Will you give me a chance?"
Tears pricked at Sarah's eyes as she looked up at Jack, her heart overflowing with emotion. Without hesitation, she threw her arms around him, burying her face in his chest.
"Yes, Jack," she whispered. "I'll give you a chance."
For the rest of the day, Sarah couldn't stop thinking about Jack's words. He loved her. After all these years, he still loved her. And now they had a chance to make things right.
As the evening wore on and the conference events came to a close, Sarah and Jack found themselves alone in the hotel bar. They ordered drinks and sat in a comfortable silence, enjoying each other's company.
But as the night wore on and the alcohol flowed, Sarah found herself opening up to Jack in a way she hadn't in years. She told him about her past relationships, her fears and insecurities, and the way she had thrown herself into her career to distract herself from her loneliness.
And Jack listened, really listened, with a look of understanding in his eyes that made Sarah feel like she was finally being seen for who she truly was.
"You know, Sarah," Jack said, taking her hand in his. "I always knew you were meant for big things. And I'm proud of everything you've accomplished. But I also know that you're so much more than your job. You're kind, and smart!
Sarah blushed at Jack's words, feeling a warmth spread through her body. It was as though no time had passed since they were last together, and he still knew how to make her feel special.
"Thank you, Jack," she said, looking into his eyes. "That means a lot coming from you."
They sat in comfortable silence for a few moments, sipping their drinks and watching the sunset. Sarah felt her mind drift back to their high school days, remembering how it felt to be in Jack's arms, how his touch made her feel alive.
She had tried to push those memories away, to focus on her career and forget about the past. But being here with Jack, it was as though all those old feelings had come rushing back to the surface.
Sarah took a deep breath and turned to face Jack, her heart pounding in her chest.
"Jack, can I ask you something?" she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Of course, anything," he replied, giving her hand a gentle squeeze.
Sarah took another deep breath before speaking. "Do you ever think about what might have happened if we hadn't broken up in high school? If we had stayed together?"
Jack's expression softened as he looked at her, his thumb tracing circles on the back of her hand.
"Sometimes," he admitted. "But I try not to dwell on it. We were young, and we both had a lot of growing up to do. Maybe we wouldn't be where we are today if things had worked out differently."
Sarah nodded, but her heart sank a little at his words. She had been hoping that Jack felt the same way she did, that he still harbored feelings for her after all these years.
But then Jack leaned in closer, his eyes locking with hers.
"That being said," he said, a small smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "I can't deny that being here with you now, it feels like no time has passed. You still make me feel alive, Sarah."
Sarah's heart skipped a beat at his words, and she felt a flutter in her stomach. Could it be possible that Jack still felt the same way she did?
Before she could say anything else, their server arrived with their food, interrupting the moment. They spent the rest of the meal chatting and laughing, but Sarah couldn't shake the feeling that something had shifted between them.
As they walked back to their hotel, Sarah found herself stealing glances at Jack, wondering if he was feeling the same things she was. She couldn't deny that the old feelings she had for him were stronger than she thought, and being with him again was making her question everything she thought she knew about herself.
When they arrived at the hotel, Jack walked her to her room, lingering at the door.
"Thanks for a great evening, Sarah," he said, smiling at her. "I had a lot of fun."
"Me too," she replied, her heart racing. "Do you want to come in for a drink or something?"
Jack hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Sure, I'd like that."
Sarah's heart leapt as she led him inside, pouring them both a glass of wine. They sat on the couch, sipping their drinks and chatting about their lives since high school.
But as the night wore on and the wine flowed, the conversation turned more personal, more intimate. Sarah found herself opening up to Jack in a way she never had before, telling him about her fears and insecurities, her hopes and dreams.
And as she spoke, she realized that the old feelings she had for him were still very much alive, and that maybe, just maybe, they could have a second chance at love.
