Chapter Five - Fire and Shadows

The storm outside matched the storm inside her chest. Rain battered against the windows of the safe house, each drop echoing the restless thoughts she couldn't silence. He had been pacing the room for what felt like hours, a gun never far from reach. His sharp profile caught in the dim light, the way his shoulders tensed, the unspoken rage simmering beneath his calm facade all unsettled her. "Stop staring," he said suddenly, without looking her way. Her cheeks heated. "I wasn't—" "You were." He turned, eyes dark as night, putting her in place. "And I don't like to be studied." "Then stop being so... unreadable," she snapped, surprising even herself. Fear and exhaustion gave her courage she didn't know she had. For a moment, silence. Then he smirked, low and dangerous. "Careful, princess. Keep talking like that, and I might start to think you're not afraid of me." Her heart lurched. Afraid? Oh, she was. But not in the way he imagined. He stepped closer, and the air between them tightened like a bowstring. His hand brushed the wall beside her head, not touching her, but close enough that she felt the heat of him. "Tell me," he murmured, voice rough, "What scares you more, my enemies' bullets... or me?" She swallowed hard, unable to answer. And that silence was enough. His smirk faded, replaced by something far more dangerous honesty. "Don't lie to me again," he whispered, then pulled away, leaving her shaken and breathless. Across the city... In a luxurious parlor scented with roses and smoke, Madam Luciana swirled a glass of red wine, her eyes fixed on the dossier spread before her. Grainy photographs of the safe house, snapped from the shadows. Her spy bowed low. "They won't stay hidden for long. Should I send a team?" Luciana's lips curved. "No. Let him believe he's safe. Let him taste what it's like to think he can protect her." She leaned back, eyes glinting like a serpent ready to strike. "When the time comes, I'll take her. And then we'll see just how crazy his obsession truly is." Her laugh, soft and cruel, echoed through the room.
