The Mark of Prophecy

The silver pulse finally receded, leaving the room in a heavy, ringing silence. My breath came in ragged hitches, my body trembling with the aftershocks of a power that felt too big for my skin. Kaelen still held my hands. His grip was the only thing keeping me from shattering. While Jaxson and Drax provided the heat, it was Kaelen’s energy—sharp, cool, and incredibly stable—that acted as an anchor. I looked into his icy blue eyes and felt a pull deeper than the mate bond. He wasn't just my Alpha; he was my gravity. "Look," Jaxson whispered, his voice uncharacteristically solemn. He wasn't looking at the shattered glass or the ruined furniture. He was pointing at the far wall. Where my silver light had struck the black marble, it hadn't just scorched it. The energy had etched deep, glowing symbols into the stone—ancient runes that hadn't been seen in a thousand years. Kaelen’s face went deathly pale as he traced the marks. "The Sigil of the Lunar Sovereign," he breathed. "Phoebe... this isn't just magic. This is the mark of the prophecy." The legend was a ghost story told to frighten Alphas: a female wolf born with the blood of the moon who would either unite the packs or burn them to the ground. She was a threat to the very foundation of the High Chiefs' rule. "If the Council sees this, they won't just come for her," Drax growled, his hand tightening on my shoulder. "They’ll declare a Holy War to execute her." "Then they never see it," Kaelen snapped, standing up and pulling me with him. "Drax, get the cleaning crew in here—the ones on the Vane payroll who don't talk. Have this wall torn down and replaced by dawn. Jaxson, we’re moving the schedule up." I looked between them, confused and terrified. "Moving what up?" wow "Your training," Kaelen said, his gaze turning intense. "You can't stay locked in this room forever, and you can't control this power without practice. But you can't be 'Phoebe Blackwood' out there. As of tomorrow, you are an Elite Transfer from the Northern Wastes. A nobody." The next morning, I was standing at the iron gates of The Lycaeum, the most prestigious military academy for the elite of all packs. It was a den of vipers. The hallways were filled with the daughters of High Alphas—women who spent their days perfecting their shift and their nights hunting for a powerful mate. They wore their status like armor, dripping in designer gear and smelling of arrogance. "Keep your head down," Jaxson whispered as he walked me toward the registration hall. He was acting as my "handler," his usual smirk replaced by a mask of professional coldness. "To them, you're just a scholarship soldier. Don't shift, don't use the silver, and for the love of the moon, don't let anyone see you looking at Kaelen." It was easier said than done. As we entered the main courtyard, a group of high-ranking females blocked our path. At the center stood Sloane, the daughter of a High Chief and the girl everyone assumed would eventually win Kaelen’s hand. She was beautiful in a sharp, predatory way, her scent a cloying mix of lilies and ambition. "Well, well," Sloane drawled, her eyes raking over my standard-issue uniform with disgust. "Jaxson, I didn't know the Triad was taking in strays from the Wastes. Is she the new maid?" The girls behind her tittered. My blood began to simmer. I felt the silver hum in my marrow, reacting to her hostility. "She’s a recruit with potential, Sloane," Jaxson said evenly, though I felt the tension in his arm. "Move." Sloane stepped closer to me, sniffing the air. "She smells... strange. Like ozone and old metal." She leaned into my ear, her voice a poisonous whisper. "Stay away from the Alphas, little mouse. Kaelen belongs to a future High Queen, not a piece of gutter-trash like you." I clenched my fists so hard my nails drew blood. I wanted to show her. I wanted to let the silver erupt and show her exactly who the "trash" was. But then I saw him. Kaelen was standing on the balcony above the courtyard, surrounded by the High Chiefs and the Academy board. He looked like a king, distant and untouchable. For a split second, his eyes met mine. He didn't smile. He didn't acknowledge me. But I felt his energy reach out, a cold, steady pulse that calmed the fire in my veins. Patience, Phoebe, his voice echoed in my mind—an Alpha link so strong it bypassed my defenses. Learn their weaknesses. When the time comes, we won't just beat them. We’ll replace them. I lowered my gaze, playing the part of the shy, ashamed commoner. But as I walked past Sloane, I felt the hidden mark on my shoulder—the one the silver had burned into my skin—begin to itch. The High Chiefs were searching for the prophecy. They were standing ten feet away from it, and they had no idea that the girl they were looking down on was the one who would end their world.
