Ivy's POV…
The lights grew brighter, and my heart thumped louder in my chest. Was I going to die this way?
But then I heard it. A voice, sharp and commanding, cutting through the panic.
"Ivy, get in immediately!"
My body jerked into motion, and I turned toward the car. It wasn’t just anyone behind the wheel. It was Austin. The one I loved, the one I was running to. I had never been more relieved to see someone in my life. Without thinking, I rushed toward the car, my wedding gown swirling around my legs.
Austin’s eyes locked with mine as I slid into the passenger seat, my breath shaky.
I immediately hugged him tightly, with a smile lit on my face. “I love you so much, Austin.”
I immediately pulled away when I saw my father's guard rushing into their car. They would be on our tail in seconds, but Austin was faster. His eyes flickered to me, and I saw the resolve in them. He wasn’t going to let them stop us.
“Drive, Austin. We can't let them catch up,” I said, my voice tight with urgency.
Austin didn’t hesitate. The engine roared to life, and the car shot forward, the tires screeching against the pavement. I looked out the back window, my father and the guards already rushing toward their own car.
“We need to go faster,” I breathed, clutching the seat, watching the road blur past.
And then, just as we were gaining speed, I saw her. Claire. My personal maid. She was standing by the roadside, her hands raised in the air, desperate for us to stop.
“Claire!” I yelled, my heart leaping in my chest. I couldn't leave her behind. She was the only one who had supported me. She had encouraged me to run, to be free.
Austin glanced at me, his jaw tight. “We’re running out of time, Ivy. We can’t slow down.”
But I couldn’t just leave her.
“Please, Austin, stop. She has to come with us.”
Austin slammed on the brakes, the car jerking to a stop, and Claire quickly ran toward us.
“You’re doing it, my lady!” She shouted, breathless, as she hopped into the car.
“You actually did it!”
I couldn’t help but smile through the tears that were threatening to spill. “I couldn’t have done it without you, Claire. Thank you.”
Claire’s eyes sparkled with pride. “You’re so brave, Lady Ivy. I’m proud of you!”
I sighed slightly because I was finally able to breathe, and I looked at Austin, who was grinning at me, though there was a slight tension in his shoulders. He was worried. I could see it.
“This is it,” I whispered to myself. “This is my life now. I’m with Austin. I won’t let anyone take that from me.”
Austin’s grip tightened on the wheel as he pressed the accelerator, his gaze flicking to the rearview mirror.
The sound of an engine grew louder, and my stomach dropped.
“They’re catching up!” I gasped.
The car behind us was closing in. I could see the shadows of my father’s men through the glass. They were determined to stop us.
“Austin, go faster!”
His eyes narrowed, and without a word, he pushed the gas pedal harder, the car surging forward. The road stretched out before us, but the car behind us wasn’t backing off. I could hear the roar of their engine getting louder and louder.
“Oh, moon goddess. Please do not let them catch up to us, please.
Then, without warning, the truck appeared.
Austin swerved, his hands yanking the wheel, but it was too late. The truck was coming straight for us. The screeching of tires echoed through the air as Austin jerked the wheel harder, trying to avoid the collision.
I screamed, my hand shooting out instinctively to grab onto the seat as the car spun out of control. Everything happened in slow motion—the world tilting, the sound of screeching metal filling my ears. The car started rolling.
Over and over.
The ground was spinning, my body flung from side to side, each roll of the car sending a jolt of panic through me. I could feel my heart in my throat, my breath trapped in my chest.
Please, Goddess, please.
It was like everything was happening too fast, too violently. My thoughts were scattered, my mind racing through a thousand worst-case scenarios. What if we didn’t survive? What if this was it? What would happen to Austin? What would happen to Claire and me?My parents would lose it if they discovered I was dead.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the car came to a sudden stop.
Austin was already out of the car, shouting, “Claire, get out! Now!”
Why wasn’t he yelling my name?
I blinked, confusion flooding my brain.
He had pulled Claire from the wreckage first. Not me.
“What... what’s happening?” I whispered, the words thick in my mouth.
But I couldn’t move. My body was still in shock.
Austin’s voice cracked with fear as he shouted, “Ivy! Ivy, are you okay?” while he helped me get out of the car.
I tried to sit up, but everything was spinning. Why had he ignored me? Why hadn’t he checked on me first?
I looked over at Claire, who was standing by the wrecked car, her eyes wide with panic.
What was going on? Was I imagining this?
“Austin...” My voice barely escaped me, but it was enough to snap his attention back to me.
He hurried over, kneeling beside her, worry in his eyes, like it wasn't the first time.
“I’m sorry, Claire,” he whispered, “I thought I’d lost you.”
What's going on here? Why am I hallucinating? Why was he clingy with Claire?
My head throbbed as I blinked rapidly, trying to clear the fog from my mind. I could feel a sharp pain in my side.
His hand cupped her cheek, and I felt my heart race.
What was going on? Why was he this way towards Claire? Did I make the right choice by running away with him?
