Ivy's POV
My eyes opened slowly. My head felt heavy, and my body ached all over. The room around me was unfamiliar—large, elegant, and filled with luxury.
Where was I?
Panic hit me like a wave. The last thing I remembered was the accident—the car flipping, Austin shouting, Claire screaming.
"Austin?" My voice was shaky. "Claire?" My voice echoed, but there was no answer.
I threw the blankets off me and stumbled to my feet. I needed to find Austin and Claire and check if they were okay.
Barefoot, I hurried to the door and pulled it open. Walking through the dark hallway.
Then I heard it. Voices. Muffled. Low. Intense.
I followed the sound, my legs shaking with every step. The voices were coming from a room at the end of the hall. As I got closer, I heard something else—soft sounds, strange sounds. My pulse quickened as I tried to make sense of what I was hearing.
Then I froze. A woman's voice. A moan.
My chest tightened, my fingers trembling as I reached for the door. I shouldn’t open it. I didn’t want to see. But something inside me needed to know.
With a deep breath, I pushed the door open just a c***k.
And my world shattered.
Austin. On top of Claire. His body pressed against hers, his face buried in her neck. Claire’s hands clutched his shoulders, her lips parted in pleasure. Their bodies moved together in a way that made my stomach turn.
I slapped a hand over my mouth, swallowing the scream that threatened to escape. My whole body shook. My mind screamed at me to run to them and let them know how I felt, but my legs refused to move.
This was the man I had given up everything for. The man I had risked my life for. The man I had trusted with my heart.
And this was how he repaid me?
My vision blurred with tears. My breathing was ragged and uneven. I felt like the walls were closing in, like the world was spinning too fast.
So I turned away, tears spilling without stopping.
Did this happen under my watch, so that's why he cared so much about her, so he didn't really love me? What have I done!
I walked back to my room, clutching the floor. My mind raced with questions, with doubts, with regrets.
Had I made a mistake?
I collapsed onto the bed, burying my face in my hands as silent sobs wracked my body. My chest ached. I had fought so hard for this love. I had given up everything. And now? Now I was nothing but a fool.
I cried until my body gave up. Until my eyes burned and my head throbbed. Until my heart felt numb.
Then, at some point, I fell asleep.
The next morning, I woke up to the feeling of someone watching me.
I blinked, my vision still blurry from the tears.
Austin was sitting at the edge of my bed, his face soft, his eyes filled with concern.
“Ivy,” he said gently, reaching out to touch my face. “Are you okay?”
I stared at him, my heart twisting painfully. Was I okay? He had no idea that I had seen him. That I knew.
I swallowed hard, forcing my face to stay blank. “I… I’m fine.”
He smiled, but there was something in his eyes—something unreadable. “I missed you last night.”
I nearly laughed. Missed me? After what he had done?
“I had so much to do,” he continued. “This place… it’s my home now. My father was the last Alpha here. Now, it’s my turn. But I need you by my side, Ivy. I need your help.”
My stomach clenched. His words felt rehearsed. Calculated.
Then, before I could even react, he reached into his pocket, pulled out a small velvet box, and opened it.
A ring.
A diamond so big it caught the light, sparkling like a cruel joke.
“Ivy,” he said, his voice filled with fake sincerity. “Will you marry me?”
I stared at the ring.
At him.
At the man I had loved.
At the man who had betrayed me.
My hands trembled as I looked up at him, my heart pounding so loudly I could barely hear my own thoughts.
What should I do?
Should I say yes, pretend I didn’t know, and get my revenge?
Or should I walk away, knowing that I had wasted my heart on a lie?
I took a deep breath.
Austin looked into my eyes, his expression serious. "I want you to help me with your influence so I can become the Alpha of this kingdom. This palace belongs to my father—it should be mine. Would you help me? I need your support."
“What about my father? Isn't he still looking for me?” I asked, wanting to divert his attention.
“He thinks you're dead; we fabricated it after the fire and made it look like we all died, so by now, your dad is doing his only daughter's funeral, so you're dead to them now, and you only have me. So would you marry me and stay by my side and help me secure my kingdom?” He asked.
His words echoed in my mind, stirring a whirlwind of emotions. I loved this man.
Despite everything, despite my doubts, my anger, and the betrayal that still stung, I loved him. And if I loved him, shouldn’t I stand by him? Shouldn’t I make sure he got what he wanted, just as I would get what I wanted?
Reluctantly I stretched out my hands, my fingers trembling slightly as I took the ring from him. "I will get married to you," I said, my voice steady, but my mind a storm of conflicting thoughts. "And I will also help you take back the kingdom."
But why had I been so stupid to believe that last night was a mistake? If he wasn’t even mentioning the damage he had caused—if he wasn’t apologizing or showing any remorse—then maybe I was the real fool here. The real damage wasn’t what had happened between us. It was what had been done to me.
And now, as he stood before me, slipping the ring onto my finger, I made a silent vow to myself.
I would marry him.
I would play my part.
But I would also make sure that he paid for sleeping with my best friend.
