Notification dings

A long silence had fallen between us after my confession. Or rather, after his confession, and my stumbling attempt to put up a fight. My fingers hovered over the keyboard, Twitter open, the direct message thread with Caleb staring back at me. My heart was a frantic drum against my ribs. Had I made a mistake? Was this the moment he’d back away, realizing the impossible weight of my words? Then, his reply came, swift and resolute. Caleb @CalebOfficial Leila. I hear you. I understand why you feel that way. But this isn't wrong. What we feel, it's real. And it's not a choice. We found each other. Maya's our sister, yes, but that doesn't change what's between us. It doesn't make this feeling less valid. My brow furrowed. He was doubling down. A part of me, the part that craved the easy solution, wanted to shut him down, to end the conversation there. But another part, a deeply buried, hopeful part, listened intently. Me @LeilaWrites Valid or not, Caleb, it’s complicated. More than complicated. It could destroy everything. Mom, Maya... think about what this would do to them. Caleb @CalebOfficial And what about us, Leila? What about what it does to us if we ignore this? If we pretend it doesn't exist? That's not protecting anyone, it's just hurting ourselves. We're not blood. We chose this family, yes, but our connection, this... this thing between us, it's something else entirely. It's separate. His words were a relentless wave, chipping away at the carefully constructed wall I’d built. He wasn't backing down. He was fighting for us, for this. My fingers trembled as I typed, deleting, retyping, trying to find the words to push him away, but failing. Me @LeilaWrites It's reckless. Dangerous. Caleb @CalebOfficial Maybe. But I'm not afraid. Are you? Of this? My breath hitched. The screen seemed to glow with the intensity of his question. He was asking me to admit it, to finally acknowledge the electric current that had hummed between us for so long. Me @LeilaWrites No. The single word, so small, felt like a seismic shift. I closed my eyes, picturing his face, the intensity in his eyes, the way his smile always crinkled the corners. My phone buzzed again, pulling me back. Caleb @CalebOfficial Then let's stop fighting it. Let's just... feel. We can figure out the rest later. Just you and me. His words were a warm current, washing over the last vestiges of my resistance. My fingers flew across the keyboard, a desperate need to convey the tumultuous desire raging within me. Me @LeilaWrites Caleb... I... I don't know what to say. My head is spinning. All I know is... when you say things like that... Caleb @CalebOfficial Like what? That I want you? That I can't stop thinking about you? That you're all I see? My cheeks flushed, a deep blush that surely no one could see, but I felt it burn. It was raw, explicit in its emotional honesty, and terrifyingly alluring. The world outside my screen faded. There was only him, only his words, painting a vivid picture in my mind. Me @LeilaWrites Yes. Exactly like that. It's... it's overwhelming. In the best way. Caleb @CalebOfficial Good. Because you overwhelm me too, Leila. In every single way. A new message popped up, not from Caleb, but a notification from my general feed. I almost ignored it, my focus entirely on Caleb, on this incredible, forbidden conversation. But then I saw the username. @Maya_Official tagged you in a tweet: "Some secrets are just too big to keep hidden forever. The truth always finds a way out. And sometimes, it's closer than you think. @LeilaWrites" My blood ran cold. The playful, casual tone Maya usually used on Twitter was replaced by something sharp, accusatory. And the timing... it couldn't be a coincidence. My eyes darted to my own profile, then to Maya's, then to Caleb's, a frantic scramble for context, for an explanation. My heart hammered against my ribs, but this time, it was with pure, unadulterated dread. Had she seen? How? What had she seen? My phone buzzed again. This time, it was a direct message, not from Caleb, but from Maya. Maya @Maya_Official (Direct Message) Leila. We need to talk. NOW. What in God's name is going on between you and Caleb? My stomach dropped. My vision blurred for a moment, the words on the screen swimming before my eyes. The carefully constructed world I had just allowed Caleb to dismantle around me, was now crumbling, exposed for the world to see, or at least, for Maya to see. TO BE CONTINUED
