Chapter 20: Her Reluctant Luna

799 Words
The gate stood in the center of the courtyard. It had not been there before — it had risen from the earth when the ancient ones called it, a crack in the world that bled darkness. It pulsed like a living thing, hungry and waiting. I walked toward it with Damon at my side. The ancient ones tried to stop us. Kael intercepted them, wounded but still fighting. Elena raised a wall of silver light between us and them. Selene stood with a blade, holding the line. They were buying us time. I reached the gate. The darkness hummed. "Are you sure?" Damon asked. "No," I said. "But I'm ready." I raised my hand to the gate. The darkness reached for me, eager, pulling at my blood. But this time, I didn't fight it. I spoke to it. You want my blood, I thought. You can have it. On my terms. The gate paused. I am the last of the Moon-touched. My blood is the key. But a key can choose which doors it opens. And I choose to close this one. Forever. I pulled the moonlight — not from the sky, but from inside myself. Every drop of warmth I had. Every piece of silver light. Every ounce of the power my mother had given me. I poured it into the gate. The gate screamed. The darkness fought. It wrapped around me, cold and suffocating, trying to drain me dry. But I held on. I poured more. I gave everything. And then — — I felt Damon's hand in mine. Not holding me back. Holding me up. His warmth flooded through me. His strength. His love — the love he had been too afraid to name, the love he had carried for 300 years, the love he had found again in me. I was not alone. I was never alone. With his hand in mine and the moonlight in my blood, I pushed. The gate shattered. Silence. I woke on the cold ground, staring at the sky. The moon was returning — a thin crescent, faint but growing. Damon was beside me, unconscious, his hand still wrapped around mine. Elena knelt on my other side, her face wet with tears. "You're alive," she whispered. "I gave everything I had." "You did. But you weren't alone. And that made all the difference." I looked at Damon. "Is he—" "He's alive. Just exhausted." Elena smiled. "Like you." I laughed — a weak, broken sound. "Did we win?" "We won." "What about the ancient ones?" "Gone. The gate closed. Their connection to this world was severed when you shattered it." "The army?" "Scattered." I let my head fall back against the ground. The stars were coming out. The air smelled like snow and blood and something else — something sweet. Hope. For the first time in my life, I felt like I belonged somewhere. A week later, I stood on the balcony outside my chambers, watching the moon rise full over the forest. Footsteps behind me. "You should be resting," Damon said. "I've rested enough." He stopped beside me. His shoulder brushed mine. "The keep feels different," he said. "It is different. The war is over." "We're both still standing." "Against all odds." A pause. Then he turned to face me. "I meant what I said at the gate." "What part?" "All of it." His hand found mine. His golden eyes held mine. "I spent 300 years loving a memory," he said. "I didn't think I could love again. But you came — stubborn, sharp, impossible you — and you changed everything." "Damon—" "I'm not asking you to replace Elena. I'm not asking you to be my mate. I'm asking if you'll stay." His voice cracked. "Not because of a contract. Not because of a prophecy. Because you want to." I looked at him — the Wolf King, the man who had waited 300 years, the man who had held my hand at the end of the world. And I smiled. "I've never wanted to stay anywhere in my life," I said. "But this place — these people — you." I squeezed his hand. "I want to stay." That night, I stood at my window and looked at the moon. It was full. Bright. Beautiful. I raised my hand. The moonlight bent toward me — warm, familiar, mine. But this time, I didn't draw it in. I let it rest. Aurora. My mother's voice, soft and proud. Yes, Mom? You did it. You broke the cycle. I had help. I know. A pause. I love you, daughter. I love you too. The moonlight faded. The stars shone. And for the first time in my life, I felt like I was exactly where I was meant to be.
