The night the moon went dark, they came.
I felt them before I saw them — a pressure in the air, a stillness in the wind, a silence that swallowed every sound in the keep. The wolves felt it too. They gathered in the courtyard, restless and growling, their eyes fixed on the forest.
I stood at the gate with Damon, Elena, and Kael.
"Can you feel them?" I asked.
"Yes," Damon said. "But I don't know what they are."
"Something older than wolves," Elena murmured. "Something that shouldn't exist anymore."
The forest went silent.
And then they stepped out of the shadows.
They looked human — almost. Tall, pale, draped in robes the color of dried blood. Their eyes were black from edge to edge, no whites, no pupils. Just voids that seemed to drink the light.
There were three of them.
The one in the center stopped at the edge of the courtyard. Its head tilted, fixing on me.
"Aurora Blackwood." The voice was dry, ancient, like wind through dead leaves. "We have waited for you."
I stepped forward. Damon's hand caught my arm.
"Don't."
"It's me they want."
"Exactly."
I pulled free. "I'm not going to hide."
I walked to the edge of the courtyard, stopping ten feet from the ancient ones.
"You marked my sister," I said. "You've been hunting my bloodline. I want to know why."
The central one smiled — a slow, terrible thing. "Because you are the last of the Moon-touched. And the last of anything has the most power."
"Power to do what?"
"To open the gate."
"Gate to where?"
"To the place between worlds. The place your ancestor sealed 500 years ago." Its black eyes glittered. "Your blood is the key, Aurora Blackwood. And we have come to collect."
I felt the moon respond to my anger — a surge of silver warmth flooding my veins.
"If I'm the key," I said, "then I choose which doors I open."
The smile vanished.
"You do not understand, child. The gate does not ask for permission. It takes what it needs."
"Then it's going to be disappointed."
The ancient one's form flickered — for a moment, I saw something beneath the human skin. Something vast. Something that did not belong in this world.
"The moon is dark tonight," it whispered. "Your power is at its weakest. And we are not alone."
Behind them, the forest stirred. Shapes moved in the dark. Dozens of them. Hundreds.
An army.
Damon stepped up beside me, his hand finding mine.
"Then we fight," he said.
I looked at him. He looked at me.
And for the first time, I didn't feel afraid.
"Together?" I asked.
"Together."
