Skylar I stretched my arms and took a deep breath. At last, I had finished cleaning the women’s restroom. Next, I would clean the men’s restroom, and then I could clock out. Carrying the bucket filled with soapy water mixed with tile cleaner and bleach, along with my mop, I stepped out of the women’s restroom and headed toward the other one. I was just about to enter the men’s restroom when I heard the heavy breathing of a man and a woman inside. Even before seeing what they were doing, I could already guess. They were making out inside the men’s restroom. I pushed the door open slightly and peeked inside. I scowled when I saw that the man was my ugly ex-boyfriend, and with him was a woman nearly twice his age. We both worked for the same company, but he held an office position, while I ended up as a cleaner. We applied together at Zulueta Corporation as interns, but I never understood why I was turned down while Finn was accepted. But I was offered a job as a cleaner. Even so, the pay at Zulueta Corporation was high and the benefits were good, so despite the job being far below my educational background, I accepted it anyway. I used to wonder why, when my qualifications were far better than Finn’s, I was the one rejected and he was hired. Now I knew. Finn had used connections to get in. He got hired through his sugar mommy. I recognized that woman. She was one of the people who interviewed us before. An idea suddenly crossed my mind. a A way to get back at my cheating ex and his sugar mommy. I pushed the door wide open and immediately threw the dirty water from my bucket right at the two of them. “What the heck! Who—” Finn stopped speaking and quickly pulled away from his sugar mommy the moment he saw who was standing at the door and had just doused them with water. “Oops! I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to. I thought it was just dogs mating inside the restroom." I pretended to apologize, but inside I was laughing secretly. It was obvious how frustrated and interrupted they looked. “You b***h!" The sugar mommy pointed at me, seething.“Do you want to get yourself fired?” “Shh." I put my index finger to my lips.“Keep your voice down. Someone might overhear you and discover what you two were doing in here. Next time, just book a hotel room. A restroom is not a private room for such activities.” There was nothing they could do except glare at me angrily before hurrying out, terrified that someone else might learn their secret. As far as I knew, that woman was already married and her husband also worked in the same company. After finishing the men’s restroom, I quickly gathered all my cleaning supplies, fixed myself up, and got ready to leave. We cleaners worked on rotation. Today, I was assigned to clean the restrooms on the third floor and tomorrow, I will be given different tasks. As I stepped out of the building, I was surprised when my mother suddenly approached and pulled me to one side. I raised an eyebrow when I saw that she was not alone, my stepfather and stepsister were there as well. What could this be about? Were they going to ask me for money again? “What are you all doing here? Is there some kind of family reunion?" I asked her sarcastically. "Just stay quiet and go along with us, okay?" my mother replied in a hurried tone. I frowned even more, growing curious about what she meant. I was about to open my mouth to ask when a voice from behind me spoke first. “Are you Skylar Winston?” The voice was deep and pleasing to the ear. I turned around to see who it was. I suddenly blinked three times in shock when I recognized him, the CEO of the company I worked for, Zake Zulueta! Zake Zulueta was incredibly handsome, despite his serious and cold demeanor. He had thick eyebrows, beautiful dark brown eyes that looked sharp and intense, and a well-defined nose that women found attractive. And his lips, they were red and looked so soft. He was tall with broad shoulders and a well-built physique that showed through his tailored business suit. It was obvious he exercised regularly to stay in such great shape. And his legs… “Are you done examining my appearance, Ms. Winston?" he asked, his voice sounding slightly annoyed. That stopped me from looking any further down his body. I cleared my throat softly and did not answer. I felt embarrassed that he had caught me studying not just his face, but his whole figure. But why was he looking for me? Had I done something wrong? Was he here to fire me? “I’m sorry, Mr. Zulueta, but this isn’t Skylar." My mother pulled me back and hid me behind her. My curiosity grew even stronger. Was this the“act” she wanted me to go along with? “I am Skylar Winston, Mr. Zulueta. That woman is my stepsister, Carrie,” my stepsister said, boldly claiming my name. She smiled sweetly at my boss, looking like a cat that had just found its mate. “Since when did we swap names, Carrie? I don’t recall that happening,” I teased her, raising my eyebrow. Mr. Zulueta and his assistant both frowned when they heard what I said. They seemed confused. “My stepdaughter is just joking, Mr. Zulueta. She likes pretending to be Skylar so much that sometimes she even believes it was her real name,” my stepfather quickly explained, forcing an awkward smile. My mother immediately agreed with him. “That’s right, Mr. Zulueta,” my mother said, then turned to me and gave me a warning look. “This is not the time for jokes, Carrie. You’d better just go home and wait for us there.” Of course, she would take her second husband and his daughter’s side over me, her own flesh and blood. But I no longer feel hurt. I had gotten used to this treatment ever since I moved into their house. After my father died, my mother had no choice but to take me in and live under the roof of the man she had chosen over my father. “Go home now, Carrie,” my stepsister added before giving me a sharp and threatening look. They were all pushing me to leave, wanting me gone from their sight. It was clear they were hiding something from me and did not want me to hear their conversation with my boss. As if I cared that much. But seeing how panicked and nervous the three of them looked made me want to rattle them even more. “Aren't you disgusted by my name, Carrie? Why claim it all of a sudden? Are there hidden jewels behind it?” I asked, smiling teasingly. Her face turned pale instantly, while my mother and stepfather shot me furious glares. I just shrugged at them. “Fine. I’ll go. If you really want my name, then you can have it.” I turned and started walking away. “Wait.” My boss’s voice stopped me. I paused and faced him again. “Which one of you is really Skylar Winston?” His expression was stern, and his gaze felt commanding. I suddenly felt nervous. Even though I had only seen his face in photos before, I knew what kind of man he was. From what I had heard, he was ruthless and feared by many. Afraid that if I stayed silent and let Carrie pretend to be me, I might lose my job once the truth came out so I decided to speak up. “I am the real—” I did not get to finish my sentence, because Carrie suddenly rushed over and pushed me hard. “Go home, Carrie. We don’t need you here,” she snapped angrily. I did not expect her to do that, so I lost my balance and fell to the ground. My company ID, which I kept hidden inside my sleeveless blouse, slipped out from around my neck. The three of them widened their eyes in panic the moment they saw it. My mother hurried toward me, but before she could reach me, Mr. Zulueta stopped her. He grabbed her arm and roughly pushed her away from me. Then he knelt down, held my ID, and read the name printed on it. “Skylar Winston,” he murmured softly. “You are the one I have been looking for. Starting today, you will be my wife.”
