The realization hit Aurora like a punch to the gut. Kael was gone.
The man who had claimed to guide them, who had known secrets about their fate—he had led them straight into a trap and disappeared.
The Shadeborn closed in, their whispers shifting into chilling laughter. The mist thickened, curling around Aurora’s ankles, and for the first time, true fear gripped her heart.
Lysander stood in front of her, sword raised. His jaw was clenched tight, his muscles coiled like a predator ready to strike. “We need a way out. Now.”
Darius’s silver eyes darted around, calculating. “There’s no escape. We fight.”
Celeste swore under her breath. “I hate this plan.”
The Shadeborn attacked.
Lysander was the first to strike, his sword slicing through the mist-like forms of the creatures. Darius moved with terrifying precision, his blade glowing faintly as it cut through the darkness. Celeste fought like a wildcat, her twin daggers flashing as she danced between the attackers.
Aurora barely had time to react before a Shadeborn lunged at her. She stumbled backward, raising her dagger with shaking hands. The creature’s skeletal fingers reached for her throat—
A blur of movement—Darius.
His blade slashed through the Shadeborn, and it dissolved into black smoke.
“Aurora, focus!” Darius snapped, his voice sharp with urgency. “They feed on fear.”
She nodded, swallowing her panic.
Another Shadeborn came at her, and this time, she was ready. She dodged its grasp, slashing at its form. The dagger made contact, and though it didn’t fully destroy the creature, it recoiled with a shriek.
Something inside her stirred.
A warmth in her chest, a pulse of power beneath her skin.
Her dreams. The visions. The feeling of something more inside her—it was all connected.
Aurora gritted her teeth and focused.
The next time a Shadeborn lunged, she didn’t just defend—she willed it to stop.
And it did.
For a split second, the creature froze, its dark form flickering like a dying flame.
Then Darius struck it down, his gaze flickering toward her in shock. “What did you just do?”
“I—I don’t know,” Aurora admitted, her heart pounding. But she didn’t have time to figure it out.
More Shadeborn swarmed, overwhelming them.
Lysander cut through another, panting. “We’re not winning this.”
Darius’s gaze darkened. “We need a way to break the mist.”
Aurora turned in desperation, her mind racing. The mist was unnatural, summoned by magic. If magic had created it… then magic could end it.
The warmth in her chest flared again.
Without thinking, she closed her eyes and reached for that power, letting it rise to the surface.
The mist around them trembled.
The Shadeborn hissed, recoiling.
Then—a burst of light exploded from Aurora’s body.
The mist shattered like glass. The Shadeborn shrieked, dissolving into nothing.
And then—silence.
Aurora gasped, falling to her knees. The air was clear. The forest, still. The battle was over.
Celeste let out a breathless laugh. “Okay… what the hell was that?”
Lysander wiped his blade, glancing at Aurora. “That wasn’t normal.”
Darius stepped toward her, his silver eyes intense. “No, it wasn’t.” He knelt beside her, lowering his voice. “You wield the power of the Dreamweavers.”
Aurora’s breath caught.
Darius continued, his voice unreadable. “And that means Kael didn’t just betray us.” He exhaled sharply.
“He betrayed you.”
