Chapter 11: The Weight of Destiny

487 Words
Silence filled the chamber as Aurora’s words settled between them. Lysander ran a hand through his hair, exhaling sharply. “Great. So not only are you the last Dreamweaver, but you also have some ancient mission to complete? No pressure or anything.” Aurora’s hands trembled as she closed the book. “I don’t even know what that mission is.” Darius stood, his expression unreadable. “Then we need to find out.” Celeste tapped her fingers against the hilt of her dagger. “Alright, but can we acknowledge the obvious? The book just dumped a prophecy into her head, and we’re acting like that’s normal.” Darius met Aurora’s gaze. “Because it is. For her.” Aurora swallowed hard. She didn’t feel like someone destined for anything. She felt like a girl caught in something too big to escape. But there was no turning back now. She took a deep breath and pushed to her feet. “We should get out of here before more Shadeborn show up.” Lysander snorted. “Now that’s the smartest thing you’ve said all night.” They made their way back up the winding stone staircase. The ruins above felt different now—quieter, heavier, as if they had disturbed something that had been waiting for them. When they finally stepped outside, the air was cool and crisp, the sky stretched in endless darkness above them. Aurora clutched the book to her chest, its weight more than just physical. Darius stood beside her, his silver eyes scanning the horizon. “We need to move fast. Kael knew you were special before you did. That means others might, too.” Aurora tensed. “You think he told someone?” Darius’s gaze darkened. “I think he didn’t betray us just for himself.” A chill ran down Aurora’s spine. Lysander crossed his arms. “So where do we go now? Because I don’t know if you noticed, but we don’t exactly have a plan.” Aurora hesitated. The book, the mark on her palm, the visions… it all led to something bigger. But where was she supposed to start? Then, as if in answer, the book flared with light again. New words appeared on the cover, shifting, forming a single name. Ravaryn. Aurora frowned. “Ravaryn? That’s… that’s a city, isn’t it?” Darius stiffened. “Not just any city. It was the last stronghold of the Dreamweavers before it fell.” Lysander groaned. “Of course it was.” Celeste sighed. “Why is it always the most dangerous place?” Aurora traced her fingers over the glowing name, feeling something stir deep inside her. “Because that’s where the answers are.” Darius nodded. “Then that’s where we go.” Aurora’s grip on the book tightened. She had no idea what waited for them in Ravaryn. But ready or not, she was about to find out.
