Accident

Sienna’s POV I stood up and headed straight to the bathroom to take a shower. Once I was done, I stepped out and immediately got dressed. I slipped into a simple brown sleeveless flare dress with an elegant cross-collar design. The hem fell just above my knees, giving it a simple yet feminine look. I walked over to my vanity and began getting ready. I applied only a light layer of makeup and a bit of lip tint to my lips. I also removed the towel wrapped around my head and combed through my damp, messy hair. Once I was finally done, I decided to head downstairs. As I walked down the staircase, I could already hear Mrs. Helena and Elara talking downstairs. I could also hear the unfamiliar voice of a man. When I reached the bottom of the stairs, I walked toward where Mrs. Helena and Elara were standing near the doorway. “You haven’t made a payment in a long time, and now you’re asking for another extension?” The man said coldly. “You’re seriously making fools out of us.” “I’m really sorry,” Mrs. Helena pleaded. “Please, I’m begging you. Just give us a little more time. I’ll do everything I can to save enough money to pay you back.” “Tell your boss to wait,” Elara said, irritation evident in her voice. “We’ll pay him eventually, but we can’t do it right now because we don’t have a money.” “That’s only if my boss agrees to what you want, miss,” The man replied. “You can use this house as payment instead. This place is worth quite a lot.” “No.” My voice cut through their conversation. Their attention immediately shifted toward me. “You’re not taking this house.” I said again. The entire room fell silent. The man slowly looked me up and down before his brows furrowed slightly. I immediately disliked the way he was looking at me, so I walked over and stood beside Mrs. Helena and Elara. “Miss, Sienna…” Mrs. Helena murmured nervously. “And who exactly are you?” The man asked. “Miss Sienna. She’s staying here with us,” Elara answered. “I don’t care about her,” He said dismissively before turning his attention back to Mrs. Helena. “Listen carefully. I’ll be back tomorrow, and if you still don’t have the money to pay us, we’ll have no choice but to take everything you own—including this house!” The man threatened, his voice laced with menace. “Please, don’t—” Before Mrs. Helena could finish, I immediately cut in. “How much do they owe your boss?” I asked the man. “Five hundred thousand dollars,” He answered. My eyes shifted toward the two men standing behind him. There were three of them in total, and all three had faces that practically screamed trouble. The man leaned slightly toward the one standing closest to Mrs. Helena and whispered something into his ear. The other man immediately smirked. I narrowed my eyes. “Fine. I’ll pay the entire debt of Mrs. Helena’s family,” I said. The men exchanged glances. “But since the debt has been unpaid for far too long, we’re adding another two hundred thousand dollars,” the man said. “That makes it seven hundred thousand dollars in total.” He glanced at his companions, and they exchanged knowing looks. “Miss Sienna, you don’t have to do this,” Mrs. Helena said, her voice filled with concern. “I’m doing this because I want to,” I replied firmly. Then I turned my attention back to the man. “You’ll get the money tomorrow morning. In full. Cash.” I gave them a bitter smile. “Good. I’m glad we understand each other,” The man said, the satisfaction practically written all over his face. “You should be grateful that someone as beautiful and kind-hearted as Miss Sienna was willing to pay your debt for you,” He added smugly. With that, he gave us a mocking little wave before turning around and walking away with his men. “Miss Sienna…” Mrs. Helena lowered her head, guilt evident in her expression. “I’m truly sorry that you got dragged into this. Please, don’t worry. I’ll save up every penny I can and pay you back,” She promised. “I’ll help you pay her back, too,” Elara added quietly. “Don’t worry. I’m not in a hurry to get the money back. You can pay me whenever you have enough. And if you don’t, that’s fine, too. It’s really not a problem for me,” I assured them. “But I’ll pay you back, Miss Sienna. I have to. We can’t just let you lose such a huge amount of money just to settle our debt,” Elara insisted. “Okay,” I said with a smile. “Just remember, I’m not going to pressure you about it.” I left the mother and daughter in the living room for a while and headed to the kitchen. I grabbed a glass and poured myself some cold water. I decided to make sandwiches for all of us. Once I had finished making three, I carried them back to the living room. I gently placed the plate on the table before sitting down beside Elara. “Here. I made some sandwiches,” I said with a smile. “They’re pretty good.” “Thank you, Miss Sienna. You really didn’t have to go through the trouble,” Elara said before taking one. “Let me try one, too,” Mrs. Helena said as she reached for a sandwich. “Wow, this is really good!” Elara exclaimed after taking a bite, earning an approving nod from Mrs. Helena. I couldn't help but smile as I watched the two of them eat. I took one for myself and bit into it as well. “Oh, by the way…” I suddenly remembered something. “Who exactly is the boss those men were talking about earlier?” The two of them exchanged a glance before turning their attention back to me. “I don’t know either,” Mrs. Helena admitted. “But my late husband knew him. You see, my husband was the one who borrowed that money. We were supposed to use it to start a business together.” She paused, her expression growing heavier. “But then the accident happened. We ended up spending all the money on his medical treatment. Unfortunately, we were just terribly unlucky…” Her voice faltered. “My husband died, and there was nothing left of the money he had borrowed.” I could hear the sadness in her voice as she spoke. Ever since I started living here, this was the first time I had learned that Mrs. Helena’s husband had died in an accident. Elara had never mentioned it to me, either. And I wasn't the type to pry into other people's family matters just to satisfy my curiosity. “Daddy, died while we were drowning in debt,” Elara said coldly. Mrs. Helena turned to look at her daughter. “Your daddy never wanted any of this to happen to him.” “I know, but we’re the ones suffering because of his debt now. We’re the ones those people keep coming after,” Elara reasoned. “I wish he could understand how terrifying it feels whenever those men come here to collect the money. I’m scared they might do something to us if they don’t get what they want.” She took another bite of her sandwich after saying that. Mrs. Helena fell silent. She didn't say anything in response to her daughter's words. After Elara finished her sandwich, she excused herself and went upstairs. Mrs. Helena soon stood up as well and headed into the kitchen, leaving me alone in the living room. I had never experienced anything like what they had gone through, but I knew it couldn't have been easy for them to wake up every day carrying such a heavy burden. I could only imagine how difficult their lives must have been. And yet, despite everything they had endured, they still managed to pick themselves back up and keep going. That was something I truly admired about them. I was actually grateful that I had ended up here with them. I eventually went to my room and walked over to the window. I gazed outside for a while, resting my head against the side of the window as I folded my arms across my chest. I guess I was lucky. I had grown up never having to struggle for the things I wanted. If there was something I needed, I could simply have it. I was still lost in my thoughts when my phone suddenly rang. I flinched at the unexpected sound. I quickly walked over to the bedside table and picked up my phone. The moment I saw who was calling, I immediately answered. “Yes, Auntie?” I said. “We’re at the hospital right now. Samuel got into an accident!” Her trembling voice immediately made my heart drop. “What?! W-Which hospital did they take him to? I’m coming there!” My voice trembled with panic as fear began to take over me. After Auntie told me which hospital Samuel had been taken to, I immediately sprang into action. I grabbed my shoulder bag from the bed and hurriedly shoved my things inside. My hands were already shaking. Samuel… Please be okay.
