*Seraphine* I want to traipse after him to the kitchen and watch him, but with a commanding voice, he tells me to wait where I am, as though he can’t stand the notion of having me near. I nearly disobey, as I don’t like being ordered about, but I am still weary from my ordeal and not up to a battle. Although I rather fancy the notion of engaging him in one, because I think it could be challenging as well as enjoyable and entertaining. With my bent legs pressed to my chest and my feet tucked in close, I study the room. It is good-sized but not much thought has been given to furnishing and decorating it. No draperies adorn the large windows, which leave the lightning visible whenever it appears. I imagine on a clear night, the moon and stars offer a reflective bit of artwork. The fireplace
