Three days later, I met the woman who changed everything.
Her name was Isabella.
I knew something was wrong the moment she walked into the penthouse.
She was beautiful.
Confident.
Elegant.
And completely comfortable around Damien.
Too comfortable.
I was sitting on the sofa when she entered.
"Damien?"
He looked up from his laptop.
His expression immediately became cold.
"Isabella."
She smiled.
"I've missed you."
I looked between them.
Damien stood.
"Why are you here?"
"I heard you were engaged."
My heart stopped.
Engaged?
I slowly stood.
"We're not engaged."
Isabella looked at me.
Then she smiled.
"So you're Amara."
I nodded.
"Yes."
She walked closer.
"I've heard quite a lot about you."
I forced a smile.
"I haven't heard anything about you."
Her smile disappeared for a second.
Damien stepped between us.
"Isabella, whatever you came here for, leave."
She laughed softly.
"You haven't changed."
"Neither have you."
She looked at me again.
"You should be careful."
My eyebrows drew together.
"About what?"
"Damien."
He immediately interrupted.
"That's enough."
But Isabella wasn't finished.
"You think you know him?"
I looked at Damien.
He didn't say anything.
She continued.
"He doesn't let people get close to him."
"Isabella."
His voice was dangerous.
She ignored him.
"And when someone tries to leave, he doesn't take it very well."
My stomach tightened.
"What does that mean?"
Damien's expression became unreadable.
"She's trying to provoke you."
Isabella smiled.
"Ask him what happened to the last woman who broke his heart."
I stared at Damien.
"Who was she?"
"Nobody."
"Then why won't you answer?"
His jaw tightened.
"Because it doesn't matter."
Isabella picked up her handbag.
"I'll leave you two alone."
She walked toward the door.
Before leaving, she turned.
"Just remember, Amara."
Her eyes met mine.
"People don't change simply because they fall in love."
The door closed behind her.
Silence filled the penthouse.
I turned toward Damien.
"Was she your girlfriend?"
"No."
"Your ex?"
He didn't answer.
"Damien."
"Yes."
My chest tightened.
"How long were you together?"
"Three years."
Three years.
I looked away.
"And you still have feelings for her?"
His eyes hardened.
"No."
"Then why did she say those things?"
"Because she's bitter."
I nodded slowly.
"Okay."
I wanted to believe him.
But something about Isabella's warning stayed in my mind.
That night, I couldn't sleep.
I walked downstairs and found Damien standing by the window again.
He looked at the city in silence.
"Why did you really choose me?"
He didn't turn around.
"I told you."
"No."
My voice trembled.
"You said I'm different. That's not enough."
He finally turned.
"Why do you care?"
"Because everyone around you seems to know something I don't."
He walked toward me.
"Amara..."
"Isabella said you don't let people leave."
His expression changed.
"I don't want to talk about her."
"But I need to know what I'm getting myself into."
He stopped in front of me.
For a moment, he said nothing.
Then he reached for my hand.
I didn't pull away.
His fingers closed gently around mine.
"I've made mistakes."
"What kind?"
"The kind that made me afraid of losing someone again."
I looked into his eyes.
"Someone like me?"
His gaze held mine.
"Exactly."
My heart skipped.
Before I could respond, he leaned closer.
His face was only inches from mine.
I could feel his breath.
Then he stopped.
He whispered,
"If I kiss you now, Amara, this contract will never feel fake again."
My heart pounded.
Neither of us moved.
Then Damien stepped back.
"Good night."
He walked away.
I stood there alone.
And for the first time, I realized something terrifying.
I didn't want the contract to feel fake anymore.
