I couldn't stop thinking about Damien's words.
"If I kiss you now, this contract will never feel fake again."
They followed me into my bedroom.
They stayed with me while I showered.
They were still in my head when I finally climbed into bed.
I told myself it was only attraction.
Nothing more.
But deep down, I knew I was lying to myself.
The next morning, I avoided Damien.
I ate breakfast alone.
I left for the office before he came downstairs.
And when I returned that evening, I went straight upstairs.
I thought I could escape the awkwardness.
I was wrong.
"Are you avoiding me?"
I stopped halfway up the stairs.
Damien stood at the bottom, his hands in his pockets.
"No."
"You've barely looked at me all day."
"I've been busy."
He walked closer.
"Amara."
I turned.
"What?"
"Look at me."
I hesitated.
Then I did.
His eyes were fixed on mine.
"I meant what I said last night."
My heart started beating faster.
"About the kiss?"
"Yes."
I swallowed.
"You don't have to kiss me."
"I know."
"Then don't."
He took another step.
"But I want to."
My breath caught.
He stopped in front of me.
"Tell me to stop, and I will."
I should have told him to stop.
Instead, I whispered,
"I don't know what I want."
His expression softened.
"Then let me make it simple."
He raised his hand and gently touched my cheek.
"Do you want me to kiss you?"
I couldn't speak.
I simply nodded.
He leaned closer.
His lips touched mine softly.
It wasn't the passionate kiss I expected.
It was slow.
Careful.
Almost as if he was afraid I would disappear.
My fingers instinctively grabbed his shirt.
The moment I did, something changed.
His arms wrapped around my waist.
The kiss deepened.
My heart raced as I realized that there was nothing fake about what I was feeling.
When he finally pulled away, we were both breathing heavily.
He rested his forehead against mine.
"Tell me this is still just a contract."
I couldn't.
Because I knew I would be lying.
I stepped back.
"We shouldn't have done that."
He watched me carefully.
"Why?"
"Because I'm starting to forget why I agreed to this."
His eyes darkened.
"So am I."
I turned and hurried upstairs.
But for the first time, I wasn't afraid of Damien.
I was afraid of myself.
Because I was beginning to fall for him.
