The Shadow Beneath the City

The following morning, Arya and Rihan sat in the corner booth of a small, dingy café just a few blocks from Rihan’s apartment. The smell of burnt coffee and greasy food filled the air, but the two of them barely noticed. The plates were hidden in Arya’s bag, but the weight of them seemed to hang over the table like a storm cloud. Arya was sketching a rough copy of the map on a napkin, her brow furrowed in concentration. Across from her, Rihan was scrolling through his phone, his face a mask of frustration. “Anything?” Arya asked without looking up. “Just the usual conspiracy theories,” Rihan said, tossing his phone onto the table. “The tunnels are cursed, they’re home to a secret cult, they’re connected to alien technology… Take your pick.” Arya sighed, tapping the pen against the napkin. “There has to be something real in all of this. Something we can use.” Rihan leaned back in his seat, crossing his arms. “Even if there is, how are we supposed to get into the tunnels? They’ve been sealed off for decades.” Arya looked up at him, her eyes sharp. “Not all of them.” Rihan raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?” She pulled out her phone and opened a map of the city. “There’s an old maintenance entrance near the edge of town. My dad used to talk about it—he said it was one of the few ways into the tunnels that wasn’t completely bricked up. It’s risky, but it’s our best shot.” Rihan stared at her, his expression a mix of disbelief and admiration. “You really don’t know how to quit, do you?” Arya shrugged, a faint smile tugging at her lips. “Not when it comes to finding Meera.” Rihan sighed, grabbing his jacket. “Fine. Let’s go see if this entrance still exists.” The entrance was hidden in a patch of overgrown woods on the outskirts of the city. The path leading to it was barely visible, choked with weeds and tangled vines. Arya and Rihan pushed their way through the underbrush, their shoes crunching against the gravel. When they finally reached the entrance, they stopped in their tracks. It was a rusted metal door set into the side of a hill, its surface covered in graffiti and strange markings. Some of the symbols were similar to the ones on the plates, their sharp, angular lines seeming to hum with an almost imperceptible energy. “This is it,” Arya said, her voice hushed. Rihan stepped forward, running his hand along the door. “It doesn’t look like it’s been used in years.” “Let’s hope it still opens,” Arya said, pulling a crowbar from her bag. With Rihan’s help, she wedged the crowbar into the doorframe and began to pry it open. The metal groaned in protest, but after a few minutes of effort, the door swung open with a loud creak. A cold, damp breeze blew out from the darkness beyond, carrying with it the smell of earth and decay. “After you,” Rihan said, gesturing toward the opening. Arya rolled her eyes but stepped inside, her flashlight cutting through the darkness. The tunnel was narrow and cramped, the walls lined with crumbling bricks. Water dripped from the ceiling, forming small puddles on the uneven floor. Rihan followed close behind, his own flashlight illuminating the path ahead. “So, what’s the plan? Just wander around until we find something?” “Not exactly,” Arya said, pulling out the sketch she had made of the map. “If this is accurate, there should be a main junction a few hundred meters ahead. From there, the tunnels branch out in all directions.” “And we’re just going to pick one at random?” Arya shrugged. “Unless you have a better idea.” Rihan muttered something under his breath but didn’t argue. As they moved deeper into the tunnels, the air grew colder, and the sense of unease that had been simmering beneath the surface began to intensify. The walls seemed to close in around them, and the sound of their footsteps echoed unnaturally, as if the tunnels themselves were alive. After what felt like an eternity, they reached the junction. It was a large, circular chamber with several tunnels branching off in different directions. The walls were covered in more of the strange symbols, their lines glowing faintly in the darkness. Arya shone her flashlight around the chamber, her eyes scanning the walls. “These symbols… They’re like a map, guiding us.” Rihan raised an eyebrow. “Guiding us where?” “I don’t know yet,” Arya admitted. “But look—this one matches the plate.” She pointed to a symbol etched into the wall near one of the tunnels. Rihan frowned, peering at the symbol. “So, we follow it?” Arya nodded, her grip tightening on the flashlight. “We follow it.” The tunnel they chose was narrower than the others, forcing them to walk single file. The symbols on the walls became more frequent, their glow growing brighter as they moved deeper. After about twenty minutes, they reached another chamber, this one smaller but more elaborate. In the center of the room was a pedestal made of the same metal as the plates, its surface covered in intricate carvings. Arya approached the pedestal cautiously, her flashlight illuminating the carvings. “This must be where the next plate is.” Rihan joined her, his eyes scanning the room. “So, where is it?” Before Arya could respond, a low rumbling sound filled the chamber. The ground beneath their feet began to tremble, and the symbols on the walls flared to life, their glow pulsating like a heartbeat. Rihan grabbed Arya’s arm, pulling her back. “What the hell is happening?” The pedestal began to rise, revealing a hidden compartment beneath it. Inside was another metal plate, its surface gleaming in the faint light. Arya reached for the plate, her fingers brushing against its cool surface. The moment she touched it, the rumbling stopped, and the chamber fell silent once more. Rihan let out a shaky breath. “Okay, let’s grab that and get out of here before something else happens.” Arya nodded, carefully placing the plate in her bag. As they turned to leave, she couldn’t shake the feeling that they were being watched. And as they made their way back through the tunnels, neither of them noticed the faint whispers that began to echo behind them, growing louder with each step they took.
