The shift came on me like a wave I couldn't outrun.
We were in the clearing. Day twelve of training. Kael had been pushing me toward the wolf form for a week, and every time I'd gotten close, the beast inside me had recoiled. Not from fear. From something else. Like a dog that refuses to go through a door because it knows what's on the other side.
"Stop thinking," Kael said. He was standing outside the circle, arms folded, watching me with those gold eyes that missed nothing. "The shift isn't mental. It's physical. Your body knows what to do. Your mind is the obstacle."
"Easy for you to say. You've been shifting for eight centuries."
"And I remember the first time. I was terrified. I thought I was dying. Every bone in my body broke and reformed in three seconds. The pain was indescribable. But it lasted three seconds. Then I was a wolf, and the pain was gone, and the world was different. Bigger. Faster. More."
"Three seconds."
"Three seconds. Anyone can endure three seconds."
I closed my eyes. Found the pulse. Let it rise, not slowly this time, but all at once, like pulling a cork from a bottle. The Lycan blood surged.
The pain hit. Kael was right. Indescribable. Not just breaking but reshaping, bones cracking and fusing and cracking again, muscles tearing and reknitting, skin splitting as fur pushed through. My spine curved. My jaw extended. My hands hit dirt as paws.
Three seconds.
Then I was standing on four legs in the clearing, and the world was a different place.
Scent. That was the first thing. Scent so rich and layered it was like seeing color for the first time. I could smell the earthworms under the soil. The deer two miles east, grazing in a clearing by a stream. The water in the lake, cold and mineral. The stone in the walls, ancient and sharp. The individual wolves in the valley below, each one a unique scent-signature that told me everything about them. Their health. Their mood. What they'd eaten for breakfast.
Sound. Mice in the underbrush, tiny hearts beating fast. An eagle circling three miles up, wings cutting the wind. Kael's heartbeat, slow and steady, sixty beats per minute. He wasn't even breathing hard.
Sight. The clearing at dusk had been dim, all greys and shadows. Now it was vivid. Every leaf edge sharp, every blade of grass distinct, the spectrum extending into ranges I hadn't known existed. I could see heat. The warm spots where animals had walked, the glowing outline of Kael's body, the faint pulse of the symbols carved into the courtyard stones.
I looked down at myself. Silver fur. Not grey, not white. Silver, metallic, catching the last light like polished metal. My paws were enormous. Twice the size of Kael's wolf form, which I'd seen once from a distance. My shoulders came up to Kael's chest in human form.
"Good," Kael said. He was standing very still. Not afraid. I could smell his emotions, and fear wasn't among them. But wary. Respectful. "Now change back."
Changing back was harder. The wolf didn't want to go. It liked the form. The power, the senses, the raw physicality of being the biggest predator in the valley. It wanted to run. To hunt. To throw back its head and howl at the sky and let every wolf within fifty miles know it was here.
I pushed. The pulse resisted. I pushed harder, compressing, forcing the wolf down and the human up. The bones cracked again. Worse going back, somehow, as if the wolf had claws it didn't want to retract.
I landed on my knees in human form, gasping. Naked. My clothes had shredded during the shift. Kael tossed me a blanket without comment, like this was routine. For him, it probably was.
"The first shift breaks the first blood seal," he said. He sat down on a boulder, watching me with an expression I was learning to read. Not quite pride. Something closer to cautious satisfaction. "There are three. Each one unlocks a deeper layer of the Lycan power. You've just broken the first."
"What does that mean?"
"It means your physical abilities are now fully active. Strength, speed, senses, healing. All at Lycan levels. The second seal guards the mental abilities. Mind link, projection, psychic defense. The third." He hesitated.
"The third what?"
"The third seal guards the Queen's form. The ultimate Lycan transformation. Your mother never broke it. No Lycan has in three hundred years."
"What happens if I break it?"
"I don't know." He said it plainly, without embellishment. "The records are incomplete. The last Lycan to achieve the Queen's form was Eleanor the First, fifteen hundred years ago. She destroyed an army of two thousand in a single night. Then she went to sleep and never woke up."
"That's reassuring."
"I'm not here to reassure you. I'm here to prepare you." He offered a hand. I took it. He pulled me to my feet. "You've done well. Faster than I expected. Faster than your mother, faster than anyone I've trained."
"The trauma."
"The trauma. Pain is a key. It's not the only key, but it's the fastest." He looked at me. "The second seal is already cracking. I can feel it. The mind link developing ahead of schedule was the first sign. Within a week, you'll have full psychic capabilities."
"And then?"
"And then we see if the third seal responds to you." He turned toward the stronghold. "But not today. Today you rest. The first shift takes a toll even on—"
He stopped. His head turned toward the valley entrance. His nostrils flared.
"They're coming," he said. "Three wolves. Alpha-ranked. A day out, maybe less."
"The council?"
"The council." He looked at me. "Someone told them a Lycan woke up. And they want to see for themselves. We have until tomorrow morning. Use it well."
