Chapter three

We reached in front of a very unfamiliar building. The exterior was painted white, and whole mansion’s fence was laid with barbed wires. The gate of the building was black. There were lights surrounding the building. The driver blasted his horn and the gate split into two. It opened. Each part of the gate sliding off. The driver drove in. After the car came to a halt. The driver rushed outside to open the door for me. ‘Thank you,’ I mumbled, as I gathered my dress and stepped out. As I walked into the house, it still felt like my mind was still with Xavier, my body was just here in this unfamiliar mansion. Which will now be called our new home. Two women dressed in blue approached me. My eyes widened as they took each step. Each step felt like it was calculated. ‘Good afternoon Ma’am’ They greeted, but I shifted back. I exhaled. It came with a sharp pain as if hitting my brain cells. ‘Like seriously?’ I laughed, but the laughter was short-lived. I couldn’t believe my eyes. ‘Come on, did Xavier forget all of a sudden?’ I know he forgets things easily but this? I have repeated over and over again that I wanted our new home all to ourselves. I wanted no maid, no chef. Just us and us alone. Now this is the second thing really pissing me off. My husband, My Xavier isn’t here with me. And now this. The sharp pain came again, but stronger this time ‘Arghhhh’ I yelped in pain as I held my head. My phone fell off my hand. ‘Ma’am’ One of the women rushed forward. I stretched my hand forward, stopping her from getting closer. The pain didn’t subside but I gathered the strength to bend and pick up my phone. I looked at the screen, luckily it didn’t break. ‘Weird’ I heard one of the maid mutters. It was the one who didn’t rush forward. I ignored it and walked up the stairs, like I knew where I was going. I could feel their eyes on me. My wedding gown swept along with me as I walked up the stairs gently. Reaching the top of the stairs, I turned right. I saw different doors but I held the door knob of the one my eyes caught first. I twisted it and entered. My eyes caught the bed and I threw myself on it. I threw my heels across the room without caring. My legs already hurt. My mind began to wander again. Xavier didn’t return my calls. And his phone saying switched off? That was new again honestly. My phone rang. I jilted up. Maybe it was him. I grabbed my phone that was beside me. But the caller’s I.D? It was anybody, but Xavier. I swiped green on my screen- It was Racheal. ‘Racheal’ My voice came out cracked. ‘Renee, what’s wrong?’ Her voice came. ‘I don’t…. I don’t…… just know’ I used every ounce of power in me to fight against the tears that were threatening to tear through me. But it failed. I burst out crying. ‘I knew it in your voice that something was wrong. Speak to me please’ Her voice came. She also sounded worried. I didn’t want to bother her, or place my burden on her. She already had her own to deal with. ‘I…I just’ ‘Renee. Don’t do that to yourself please. Tell me what’s wrong. I hate to hear you cry’ I wiped the tears that already fell down my cheek, with the back of my hand. ‘Xavier is acting strange. Can you believe he actually left me to go alone today? On our special day,’ I spoke, and sniffled in. ‘Oh my gosh! What’s wrong with him? Right now, Renee, please I need you to get hold of yourself. You know I hate to see you cry’ ‘You called at the right time for real Racheal,’ A cough escaped my throat. ‘Sorry babe’ I heard her say. ‘Thank you!’ ‘Please try get a hold of yourself, till he gets back’ ‘I’ll try my best. All I want is him beside me tonight. That's all. I want nothing else. It isn’t that much to Ask. Is it?’ ‘No, it is not. Please calm down babe’ ‘Now it’s all about me. How is your mum?’ I asked, changing the topic. I wanted to know about her mum’s health. ‘I hope she gets better Renee; the doctor hasn’t been around’ ‘What!’ I gasped ‘What’s going on with that hospital?’ ‘The nurses are taking care of her and doing a lot of check ups’ Racheal replied. ‘She will be better by God’s grace’ I cheered her on. ‘Amen!’ ‘Bye, Racheal take care of mum for now. Okay?’ ‘I well. Don’t overthink babe. We’ll have a chat later. Bye’ ‘Bye’ The call went flat after the conversation. My stomach growled. It was hunger. I lazily drew myself up. I sighted different kinds of flip flops. It was definitely Xavier’s doings. I placed my leg in one. And again, in another. I chuckled in disbelief. ‘Did he really forget my shoe size?’ I shook my head. I couldn’t count how many times I have been amused today. I gave up and wore one anyways. Still in my wedding dress, I opened the door. The cold air hit me. I glanced at my sides and there I saw an open window. I didn’t see any when I opened to door to go in earlier. I didn’t want to leave the room until Xavier came home, but my stomach betrayed me. I went down the stairs and saw the women on blue still standing. ‘Where is the kitchen?’ I spoke to no one in particular. I just wanted an answer to my question. ‘Over there Ma’am’ They chorused at the same time, pointing to where the kitchen was. ‘Thanks,’ I said and walked past them. I rushed to the deep freezer I sighted. I opened it and everything was there and sealed. ‘Eggs’ I muttered going to the refrigerator. I saw eggs right there. Just what I needed. Everything was quick. I grabbed the vegetable oil and poured little on the frying pan. I cracked the egg and poured it inside. When the egg was half cooked, I turned off the electric cooker. I saw bread and grabbed it. After some minutes, I was done eating. The thought came to my head. I just had my first breakfast as a married woman ALONE. I gulped down a bottle of water and walked up the stairs. I could feel their eyes on me, Again. I shut the door behind me and went back to laying on the bed, waiting for him to come. After what felt like hours, I heard the door open.
