I climbed the tree opposite my bedroom and pulled open the unlatched window. The sky blue walls and white furniture greeted me as I proceeded to pull off my damp powder pink dress which pooled at my feet as I stepped out. A beautiful deep blue gown was lain out on my feather down comforter with matching shoes just below on the black wooden floor. Hair ribbons and accessories were above the neckline taking place of my head on the blanket.
Ma must want to go all out today.
I didn't blame her- it was my first reveal to society as a young woman and would set the tone for the rest of my time here.
My four poster bed was the only thing black in my room apart from the floor, having been my parents at one time. I lifted my nightgown off a hook on one of the bed posts and made my way across the creaky landing outside. The worn out bathroom door was ajar and I could hear Ma closing the oven downstairs. The smell of cooling fruit pies and others being baked filled my lungs deliciously- making my mouth water. I breathed out a sigh of relief- I didn't want a fight and was glad she was busy down there.
Bathing in our chipped white porcelain bathtub, I washed off remnants of river water, sweat and dirt. It had been a while since I'd been this dirty. My last few lessons with Gya involved me refining my appearance- learning the art of being a woman and displaying everything god had blessed on my s*x in a teasing yet chaste manner. My final lesson, which I had quite some difficultly on I'd admit, had been acting the lady- emphasis on acting. I had to fake charm, inner and outer beauty, how to be ornamental yet witty, something worth men claiming. Disgusting I know. Being so fake troubled me greatly but it was necessary if I was to survive amongst humans. Regardless, whenever I saw my beautified, flawless appearance in the mirror, I couldn't help but think that if our outside reflected what we truly were inside- I'd be a ghastly sight indeed. Thank god that wasn't the case in this already sick, sad world we live in.
Drying my hair with a frayed towel, I tried to ignore its dark grey color which brought flashes of Lucian's poetic rare eyes to mind. I squirmed inside.
I dressed, getting the sudden urge to fall into bed and stay there for a few days, or at least until I got painfully hungry- so make that weeks.
Thanks Gya.
The soothing hot water and bath salts I filled the tub with after washing off all the grime had relaxed my muscles and brain to the point of foggy bliss. Just as I sat down on my bouncy soft bed, considering taking a much needed nap, Ma appeared and told me we'd be leaving for Town when I'd finished getting ready. She came in and hugged me, kissing my forehead. After a few seconds of looking at me with unconditional love in her eyes and happiness at my appearance in the deep blue dress, she gave me a wary, warm look that said there was no need for either of us to speak and give an apology. Sadly everything I said before was still a reality in my mind, no amount of brushing it under the carpet would change that.
I sat at my white dressing table on a matching silk pouf stool. The whole room had been redecorated to belong to the girly, marriageable young woman Ma expected Gya to shape me into and was brand new. Anger rose up within my chest at adults pulling my strings, shaping me into whatever they wanted from
Me. Shoving it down I focused instead on tying my hair ribbons- weaving them into my loosely kept hair.
"Fly aways encourage male touching, touching encourages desire" Gya recited while strategically deciding what to do with my hair. Every part of me was designed and purposefully sculpted to make people stare, adore and love.
"What if I don't want to be groped by guys all day?. Strands being tucked behind my ear by them is so Cliché" I grumbled under my breath.
"It's a small price to pay to stir the right response in them. Better to be coveted than feared by the masses. If your mother insists on living amongst humans we have to make sure you are never found out. I suppose if push comes to shove you can always dispose of them".
Grandma's tips always made me laugh. If I hadn't had Lucian as a friend in my early years I probably wouldn't think twice at doing just that.
I finished the whole look with the ornamental clips Ma laid out for me; they made my overall appearance look like a chauvinistic pig's wet dream- giving the impression I couldn't hurt a fly and had one buzzing around that small empty head of mine. I looked back at myself in the oval vanity mirror, c*****g my head to the side and putting on a mock vacant expression with my finger to my mouth.
I laughed.
The whole unthreatening, innocent act made a dark smile cover my rose tinged lips.
Time to herd some sheep.
