His hazel eyes were more striking than I remembered against his fire red hair and his handsome face had a rugged manliness to it. All the more interesting was that I could smell the Lamia on him.
I doubled my efforts to keep my mind blocked from Kain, allowing myself to think once it was done.
Could this be the guy my mother wanted me to accept as a suitor?, the chances of two Lamia in the area was unlikely.
Great.
Walking into the room he grinned at us all with a confident crooked smile. Intelligence shone through in those bright hazel eyes of his as well as an amused curiosity.
"Hi there, the names Coup, interesting gathering you've got here".
I vaguely heard Lea take a sharp breath in. I was shocked myself at this point but for a whole different reason- he was also the guy from my dream who was getting his arms ripped off while Lea screamed at his pain and eventual death, but of course it wasn't a dream at all- it was a vision.
A premonition.
I must have the ghost ability of Gya's to see the future. What I saw was as least one eventuality and probably the present if those horrific pregnant caged women were anything to go by. I had tried not to think about it ever since I saw Lea for the first time, but it had been nagging away at me all day- most likely speeding up my change to a real She Wolf.
A cold dread settled in my stomach the longer I looked at Coup- the dream had stopped being something to forget and officially became a reality.
Another thought occurred to me on Lea's reaction to his name; her spell did work correctly on giving her a clue- the chicken coup caught fire because his name was Coup and the fire must represent the color of his hair. She was destined to be with this guy, my premonition even showed me that, they were clearly in love- be it with a sad ending, and he was a Werewolf no less.
Wow- magic was so cool and thank god he's taken already. I have an excuse if Ma asks.
I figured we could trust him as he was fighting alongside those in the premonition and was an item with Lia in the future. I looked at her, trying to control my expression. Her beautiful oval face looked how I felt and it was blatantly obvious she knew who he was to her:
Her true love.
She was frozen to the spot and in contrast to the coldness still gripping me she looked flushed and hot with a stunned look on her face.
I probably wouldn't look so good either if I met my soul mate. I made a mental note to ask her to do a spell for me as well- just for kicks.
"Duck, are you alright?" said Lucian, watching me carefully. He moved forwards, catching himself mid act.
"Yes" my voice sounded weak and sore.
"You don't look so good" said Kain "you either Lea".
"He's Lamia, maybe that why" said Max, leaning against a dresser.
"So you remember eveything I confided in you when you were a dog. Do you still have your canine senses?" Kain asked curiously.
"It appears so" said Max with a handsome grin. He really was quite the fox in human form.
Coup raised an eyebrow, turning to Lea again as if preferring to rest his eyes on her more than anyone else.
I warmed inside but quickly felt quite sick.
"Are one of you going to explain what's going on?" Lucian asked firmly.
"My thoughts exactly. Lea, you look like you know the guy" said Kain.
"I haven't had the pleasure" Coup said, giving Lea a sexy crooked smile.
"I'll be right back" I said, speaking up "I'm just going to get changed. Lea can you show me where to go please?".
She didn't have to be told twice.
"Sure...have, have a seat Coup" she stuttered leading us away hastily.
The guys looked at us like we were crazy.
Entering a lilac room, I looked around at the tastefully decorated surroundings. White airy fabrics, silver and bronze ornaments and pastel colored silk and lace cushions scattered the room and lay on a white love seat- as well as a charming tuffeted window box. More cushions lay on a large white four poster bed. From my surroundings I guessed we were in her bedroom.
God I wish she could hear my thoughts like Kain. Coup and him would be able to hear every word we say because of their heightened hearing. The only one we didn't have to worry about was Lucian and possibly Max.
How good was dogs hearing when you're in another room?
I tapped my temple, mouthing 'can you talk to me in here' without saying the words out loud.
Lea brightened at the idea and smiled, nodding.
"OMG can you believe how hot he is!!!" were her first words streaming into my mind like a loud speaker.
I burst out laughing and so did she.
I pulled on my gown, discarding the blanket at the same time as thinking my words back to her.
"I can cover for you this time don't worry- there's no need to tell the guys about the love spell".
I put the Safire earrings on.
"I'd rather die 100 deaths before confessing that, it's so embarrassing" her cheeks blushed.
She materialized a wet, warm cloth and passed it to me.
"Neat trick" I said, wiping my face and neck thoroughly. "He is hot though, congrats" . Instantly I deflated, tossing it back to her and fixing my gown.
What is it? She said, catching it with ease.
"Umm" I sighed "What I plan on sharing when we go back there...well, it affects us all in a way and is going to be bad. Like really bad. I need you to be strong and understand I need to tell them...whether I like it or not" I said into her mind as we walked towards the door.
She looked at me thoughtfully.
"I trust you".
I gave her a strained smile.
"Good "
I un-characteristically held her hand, squeezing consolingly as we joined the guys.
She gave me a look as if trying to make sense of my behavior.
Kain and Max were helping themselves to food laid out on the table while Coup and Lucian were idly looking around the room at viles and books. The moment we entered they all came to attention. Coup's eyes darted to Lea at the same time Lucian's and Kain's found mine.
I smoothed out my dress blushing.
"Here's the thing" I said bracing myself- taking a deep breath "Before Lucian got here I was telling Lea about a weird dream I had last night" I glanced at Lucian before turning to everyone else, he was watching me seriously and I had to pull my eyes away as they sucked me in to their smoldering grey depths.
"It was more of a nightmare really...Coup was in it, all of us were except Max and until I saw him a few moments ago" I said, gesturing to Coup "I thought it was just that, a dream, but it's not, it's a vision".
I explained about Gya's ability. Lea kept a straight face like this wasn't the first time I was speaking of this.
"What did you see?" Max asked.
I tensed and recoiled at the memory, losing my voice.
"Is there a way you can show us?" Kain asked Lea, as if sensing my emotions "If we're in it we should see first hand to understand it better".
"Yes, especially if it wasn't good" said Coup thoughtfully, looking between Lea and I.
"I agree, follow me" said Lea, turning for the bedrooms. She led us down a corridor I hadn't been yet and stopped at a full body mirror hung on the wall- stepping through it. We looked at each other then followed suit, finding a curving stone staircase on the other side going down into the ground as if leading to a basement. We couldn't help but look back at the mirror we had stepped though, only to see the hallway we had just been in as the reflection. Walking down the stone steps, which had mounted torches lighting the way on the curving stone walls, it led to a large wood paneled room with the same wood making up the door, floor and ceiling. Candles were everywhere. The only furniture was a rocking chair, sewing machine on a small wooden table and a large woven rug on the floor. The moment Lea entered all the candles lit up. She swished the rug off the ground to the corner of the room with a flick of her hand as if all this was perfectly normal. The rug revealed a large white pentagram painted on the floor with other unidentifiable symbols bordering its edges.
"Sit inside the pentagram making a circle and hold hands".
The guys hesitated slightly.
"If you want to see, this is the best way. The wood and symbols amplify my power".
Reluctantly they all did as she said. She sat in-between Kain and me. Lucian happened to be on my other side and I vaguely saw him glare at Kain who smiled back amused just before Lea pushed him away so she could sit beside me.
"I need to hold one of her hands to make this work" she explained when he glared at her.
"Impressive, you do stuff like this all the time?" Coup said intrigued, looking at her from glancing around the room.
"There are no limits as far as magic is concerned" she smiled, nodding towards his hands to say hold Lucian's and Max's. He did so without missing a beat.
"Duck" Lucian said in a deep low voice, offering me his. His voice vibrated against my skin, putting me on edge.
I begrudgingly took it, sharp awareness flowing though me at his touch.
"I don't think this is a good idea..." I said anxiously, remembering the perverse nature of the vision at the last minute "it's not pretty, you guys don't know what you're walking into".
"It's okay, we understand " Lea soothed "the fact these guys are stomaching holding each other's hands is proof we all want to be here" she smiled.
"She's right, we need to see it" said Lucian.
I sucked a deep breath in.
"Don't say I didn't warn you".
"I need you to close your eyes, everyone close your eyes. Fay, empty your thoughts and go back to when you were lying in bed at night"
Lucian squeezed my hand making me grit my teeth at the memory of him holding me. I could feel his smirk without looking.
"..drifting off to sleep when the vision took a hold of you" Lia continued seamlessly. Quickly her voice shifted to sound in my head, guiding me, relaxing me into a trance. I was pretty sure she was doing some kind of spell on me, on top of going inside my mind. A light weightless feeling, like being transported out of my body, griped me. Suddenly the vision was running before my eyes, just like it had the first time I saw it.
Cages full of neglected women filling a large, damp, filth encrusted room. The rich smell of earth filled my nose in the dimly lit cave like place. Jaggered stone walls were more visibly the same as the mountains I had hiked and taken refuge in during the storm that time when living with Gya. The scene morphed into showing their swollen pregnant bellies, zooming in as if the vision was its very own entity wanting to show me specific things. Just as quickly it changed to the room full of large rowdy Rogue men, egging on the fight I assumed was the entertainment. Two muscular forms wrestled in the center- sweating, growling and covered in blood. The spectators shared the same wild, savage look about them, identifying them as Rogues. I didn't flinch this time when the barely covered women focused into view. I wasn't a prude but the first time was drastically more disturbing, I hadn't been expecting so much skin, this time however I was ready for it. Thankfully I wasn't aware of the others sharing the vision with me. Embarrassment evaded me when their exposed breasts were on show, pulled out of their clothing and bounced as they were taken by these beasts. The only thing I felt was unbridled fury. Like last time I was shown the people rather than the surroundings, as if the vision wanted to get a rise out of me at the violence; many were being slapped around for the hell of it and bleeding at the mouth, even those fondled and taken on laps. A particularly loud scream focused a woman being r***d by several rogues but her screams were drowned out by the fighting. The look in all the women's eyes got my blood boiling the moment I saw them, I wanted to end their pain this very second and get the hell out of there myself. The depravity was suffocating. Vaguely I felt Lea's hand tighten as if she sensed my distress, or maybe she was in distress. I took a welcoming breath as it all fizzled away. I was outside in the woods at night and tensed on knowing what was to come. Lea's hand tightened further as if sensing my hesitation.
The raging battle filled the scene around me, I was standing smack in the middle of it, bodies tussled, scratched and bit each other on the ground, some flying past me in combat. The smell of burning wood filled my lungs again, making me choke. Lea came into view, her earth shattering scream piercing through me. Coup was having his arms broken and ripped out of the sockets before me. A yellow light glowed under the fabric of her neckline connected to a chain she wore. He screamed for her to run with his last breaths, pulling my eyes back to him, hazel eyes bright amidst the pain, glowing with desperation to make her listen.
The large black, fast thing that knocked the Rogue off its feet the first time I saw it suddenly clicked into place, it was me, in Wolf form and I watched in realization as I charged into the Rogue, proceeding to maul him- tearing his flesh to shreds in seconds. Lucian's pain filled voice pierced through my soul, taking a hold of me stronger than it had the first time I heard it. His pain was mine and I couldn't bring myself to watch this again. I moved to take my hand out of his, vaguely knowing I was sweating and shaking where I sat next to him in the room as my senses idly drifted back to remove my hands. Lucian tightened his grip on me in a vice like hold, as did Lea- forcing me to stay put with the rest of them.
"No!" I moaned out loud, shaking my head.
Lea, poor Lea, what state must she be in at this point. A sob escaped me as they kept me there. I was physically stronger than both of them but why couldn't I get free? I felt so drained and weak.
The bastards.
I gave up, numbly watching the biggest rouge from the vision pound Lucian into the ground while mauling his neck. All too quickly he stopped fighting and lay still; an emptiness filing his eyes as blood trickled out his mouth and stained his beautiful face. The Rogue snapped his neck off without missing a beat. I sucked in a sharp breath, unable to breath as his head rolled across the grass, blood trail in its wake as it came towards me- stopping at my feet. Unlike last time when I woke up, courtesy of Lucian waking me in my room, the vision went on...this time to Kain. I had seen him in the background last night, as well as myself fighting in human form, but now I was to see his fate- he jumped onto the Rogue just as it finished off Lucian, not making it in time. Kain was covered in blood, head to toe, ice blue eyes burning and breaking the endless red. He growled fiercely like an animal on seeing Lucian in pieces and proceeded to ram into the Rogue. The savage beast took the attack in stride- grabbing Kain's neck and ripping it off his shoulders in one harsh move.
A chocked gasp came out of mouth. My heart ached in my chest. I couldn't move. I was shaking so much Lea broke the connection.
"Fay" she said in a weak sorrowful voice as she turned to me. Her face was white as a sheet and her eyes were wet, tears spilling down her face "She's in shock" she said in a scratchy voice, turning to Lucian "I had to amplify everything so we could all see, the whole experience was heightened for her. I'm sorry" she said turning to me.
Warm, strong hands tightened over my arms and I was pulled towards Lucian.
"Duck, look at me" he lifted me up so I was level with him on his lap.
Stormy grey eyes pierced into me. The moment he caught sight of my face his hold loosened significantly.
"Breath Fay" he said softly, moving a hand up to caress my face. Something in me melted at his tender touch, I didn't know he had this side to him, or maybe I did...a forgotten memory came to mind, when he was with me last night after I woke from the vision and held me in his arms like a wounded animal. I was thinking that exact same thing, what his gentleness implied, how he could possess such as side to him and hold me like that if I meant nothing to him.
Before I could stop myself I took what I needed- I threw myself in his arms and embraced him tightly, holding on for dear life until the tremors ripping through my body and chocked sobs left me. When I let go and moved off him I didn't dare look up at his face for fear of what I'd find. Instead I composed myself before looking around the room. Max looked significantly disheveled and pale, Coup and Kain looked in the midst of shock- a glazed look in their eyes as if trapped in their own hell. Coup glanced at Lea every few seconds, as if trying to make sense of their close relationship in the fleeting few seconds they were shown in the vision, his clever eyes filling with understanding the longer he kept his sights fixed on her somber, unusually still frame sitting head down, legs crossed in thought next to me.
"I know I wasn't there...in the fight" Max began, breaking the strained silence "but I recognize the place".
"Yes, me too" Kain said quietly, clearing his throat. His face still looked blanched and it was clear he was putting a lot of effort into speaking to us. I didn't blame him, he just saw his death, not to mention intense, violent r**e scenes of more than a dozen women, plus he must be angry as f**k at me embracing Lucian right in front of him just now.
What was I thinking, I wanted to slap myself.
"It's my family's cabin. I could tell even though it was blurred in the background. Max and I go there often".
"Those women" Lea said tonelessly, she had become the girl from the church again- detached and unfeeling "they were She Wolves taken from their families?" she said turning to me; her face was like beautiful hard marble, the pretty shape of her captivating eyes holding flat brown disks for pupils- showing not even an ounce of emotion.
"Yes, and I recognized the stone making up the walls where the caged women were- they're in the mountains past the Dark Forest".
"We can't leave them there knowing what's happening to them" Coup said suddenly, biting down on his jaw "I can't sit idle knowing this" a hard edge had taken a hold of his clever, normally playful face. Instantly color seeped into Lea's cheeks, bringing her some resemblance to normalcy.
"Neither can I" I said seriously "I didn't know it was real before seeing you".
"I'm going as well" Kain shot back in his normal deep voice, Max went to speak but he cut him off "No, you need to stay hidden and safe. You're my heartbeat now and you don't have any fighting experience".
"You won't die if I die" Max retorted, clearly miffed "I may be new to all this but what we saw touched me as well- it was abhorrent!".
Credit to him he looked extremely vicious and able to hold his own.
"That may be but I might as well be dead if they realize I was changed and wasn't born one of them, you're staying".
Coup raised an eyebrow but remained silent.
"Don't worry, so is Lucian" I said, turning to him for the first time. Lucian looked at me as if to say like hell I am!.
"You're human, those Rogues at the cabin may have been bigger than the ones in the mountains but you've seen what happened when they came down here- I assume the same would happen if you went to the mountains".
"The fact that they travel to Amber Wood implies we succeeded in going there and freeing those girls; I'm alive until they come here and abilities aside- I'm going because those animal's need to be wiped off the face of the earth for what they're doing up there. They deserve a fate worse than death!. Just try and stop me, I dare you".
The enraged look on his face said he wished he could kill them all with his bare teeth. It shocked me to the extent I got turned on by it.
"He has a point" said Kain "He held his own against me surprisingly well, even though I wasn't at full strength, each punch would have killed me if I were human, and didn't you say rouges are weaker because their blood is diluted?".
Coup listened attentively.
"He's not fighting human's in this case" I shot back "and he is one himself. They are still werewolves" I reiterated between grit teeth.
"I don't need your help Nemesis" Lucian said coldly "those bastards need to pay- simple as that" he turned to me "tell me when you guys leave or there'll be hell to pay when you come back" the atmosphere tensed as his eyes flashed dangerously "I'll see you all later" and with that he got up and left.
Silence filled the room.
I noticed the shifty look on Max's face.
"Max, don't even think about doing anything stupid, if you're not in the battle it either means you're dead or safe at home, don't make us tie you to a chair and throw you in the basement" I said to him.
"There was a fire, maybe he's in the woods watching from afar" Lea said in thought "he might have lit it as signal that they were there, to keep them penned it- it looked like it was spread in a ring around us."
"I encased the cabin in a circle of trees to keep out bears so it's possible it was intentional to keep them confined. They may heal but who wants to get slowed down with burns in a battle" said Kain "Plus they're there to kill us so I doubt they would have run anyway" .
"I know it's the last thing you want to do" Coup said looking at me carefully "but maybe revisiting the battle part could help us see everything clearer. There might be more after Kain dies or you might learn you can control what it shows and look around at other things the vision wasn't showing you" he said softly.
"It was controlling me to be honest but the last part was the first time I saw Kain's death, so it's possible there's more. I'd rather not go back there though".
"I can do it" Lea said quietly "now that I know what I want to see and was in it myself, it shouldn't be too hard so educe the premonition and go back there to see that particular event in time".
"You can do that? wow, thank you" I placed a hand on hers. I could tell by her face it was the last thing she wanted to do as well.
"Can we trust you know who?" Max asked in undertone, not caring Coup was sitting right next to him.
Coup raised an eyebrow.
"He's in the premonition and is helping us in the fight so yes" Lea said at once before I could.
"Thanks for the vote of confidence" Coup smiled at her "You can all trust me, I'm not a Rogue and I'm not here to cause trouble. I came in search of a mate".
Lea blushed.
"It's getting late" I spoke up, trying to pull everyone's attention from her red face "we all need to rest for the raid tomorrow, Coup do you have a place to stay?".
"No, I just arrived in Town; the strong Lamia scent drew me here".
"You can stay here in my house" Lea said quietly "My parents room is empty. Max you can stay here as well if Kain doesn't want to answer 50 questions at home over who you are".
"No it's okay, I'd rather have him close" Kain spoke up for him "Not having dog Max would make me even more depressed if I didn't have human Max- we've been together since he was a pup".
He cuffed Max around the neck weakly, still far from being his normal jovial self.
"I'm touched" Max grinned weakly, still shaken from the vision himself.
"I guess it's just you and me" Coup said, giving her a swoon worthy crooked smile. She nodded and got up abruptly. It took everything in me not to burst out laughing.
"I better go" I said, trying to keep the smile off my face.
Poor Lea must be squirming inside on being alone in the house with lover boy, and without parental supervision to act as a buffer. I laughed inside at the thought.
"We'll meet here tomorrow morning, tell your dad you're going camping" she said looking at Kain "and that you're sleeping over at my house, maybe for a few days" she said turning to me "to cheer me up on account of my parents passing".
"Kain can you cover for me with your dad at work?" I asked.
"Yeah sure, no worries".
"Okay great, sounds like a plan, see you all tomorrow" I said getting up.
Kain got up as well- guided me out by my back. A pleasant ripple went through me at his touch. His Hercules like frame towered over me as we stopped behind the door leading up to the house and he closed it to those we left.
"Fay, I'm breaking up with you".
