Chapter 2: TRUST IS A TRAP

688 Words
The second room was nothing like the first. It looked like a massive glass arena, surrounded by floating screens showing every surviving player. The air was heavy, silent, and wrong—like the space itself was watching them. Evelyn Hartman stood still, her expression calm, but her mind alert. She didn’t panic easily. She never did. But this… this was different. Daniel Cross stayed close beside her, eyes scanning every corner. His posture was steady, trained—like a shield that never lowered. Kael Draven, on the other hand, looked relaxed. Too relaxed. Hands in his pockets, faint smirk on his lips, as if this was all entertainment. Evelyn didn’t trust that calm. A sound echoed. “Round Two: Trust Exchange.” The voice was the same—cold, emotionless. “Form groups of three. Each group must eliminate one member.” Silence hit the room instantly. Then chaos began to form in whispers. The screens flickered. Names appeared. Group 7: Evelyn Hartman – Daniel Cross – Kael Draven Evelyn didn’t react outwardly, but something inside her tightened. Of all combinations… they were placed together. Kael tilted his head slightly. “Well. This is interesting.” Daniel stepped closer to Evelyn. “Stay behind me.” Kael chuckled softly. “Relax, bodyguard. I’m not here to steal her.” Evelyn raised a hand slightly. “Focus. This is psychological.” The system continued: “Failure to choose results in elimination of all members.” A countdown appeared. 10 minutes. Around them, other groups began collapsing into panic. Some argued. Some begged. Some betrayed instantly. One group already ended—someone disappeared beneath the floor without warning. No sound. No trace. Just gone. Evelyn’s eyes sharpened. “This isn’t a game,” she said quietly. “It’s a test of loyalty.” Kael smiled faintly. “Or a test of who breaks first.” Daniel frowned. “We don’t play their game.” Kael glanced at him. “Then we all die.” Silence followed. Evelyn spoke carefully. “We need logic, not emotion.” Kael studied her. “Then decide, genius. Who’s least valuable?” Daniel’s jaw tightened. “I vote myself.” Evelyn immediately turned to him. “No.” Kael raised an eyebrow. “Heroic. But useless.” Daniel didn’t look away. “I can take elimination better than either of you.” Evelyn shook her head. “That’s not how this works.” Kael leaned slightly closer. “Then how does it work, Evelyn?” She paused. Then said quietly: “Control. They want us to destroy trust.” For a moment, even Kael didn’t respond. Around them, chaos grew louder. Time was running out. 2 minutes remaining. Daniel looked at Evelyn. “Decide.” Kael also looked at her—but differently. Like he was watching something deeper than the game. Evelyn felt it. This wasn’t just about survival. It was about breaking people. Kael suddenly spoke. “I vote Daniel.” Daniel froze. Evelyn turned sharply. “What?” Kael’s voice was calm. “He’s trained. Strong. That makes him dangerous long-term.” Daniel’s tone dropped. “You planned this.” Kael shrugged. “I observed.” Evelyn stepped forward. “That’s manipulation.” Kael looked at her. “It’s survival.” The countdown hit: 10 seconds. Evelyn closed her eyes briefly. Then opened them. “I refuse to vote.” Silence. The system responded immediately: “No majority reached. Random selection initiated.” A red scan passed over them. Evelyn’s heart slowed. Then— “Selection complete.” A name appeared above them. EVELYN HARTMAN The room went silent. Daniel’s expression changed instantly. Kael stopped smiling. For the first time, he looked serious. The floor beneath Evelyn began to open. Daniel grabbed her arm. “No.” Kael stepped forward—but stopped himself. Evelyn looked up at them both. And strangely… she was calm. “I understand now,” she said softly. The floor cracked further. And Evelyn Hartman—heiress, strategist, survivor—realized the truth: This game didn’t just test survival. It tested who people were willing to lose.
