CHAPTER VI FRITZSCH’S SECRET EXPERIMENTS A little earlier on, right after midnight, two dark silhouettes crept out of the silent villa. The whole family had been asleep for about an hour when Rudolf signaled his deputy that it was time to go. Fritzch lighted the way with a flashlight, whose yellow, quivering light cast an air of gloom all around. They said the password upon entering Auschwitz, mainly to check the new guards’ vigilance, then headed to Block 11. It was a tall, quite new building, above four stories in height, which had served as barracks for Polish soldiers. Now it was a high-security prison, as well as a center for unofficial experiments on humans and torture.
