CHAPTER II THE ARRIVAL AT AUSCHWITZ A group of women and children who, unbeknownst by them, had just been selected for the gas chambers. ‘Oswiecim...!’ a fearful voice said and, a bit later, the train slowed down abruptly, waking me up from my nightmare. ‘Oswiecim! That’s what it says on the traffic sign!’ the guy spying through the hole on the side of the wagon yelled, triumphantly. The crowd felt suddenly enlivened because the train seemed to come to a halt, which probably meant that we had reached the end of our journey.
