Chapter 16

Inside the quiet luxury of the deserted restroom, Evelyn washed her hands with a clinical serenity. She stared at her reflection in the sweeping mirror, idly touching up the deep crimson of her lipstick, which remained flawlessly intact. Yet, the exact second she moved to turn around and exit, a heavy, muscled arm violently seized her forearm. BANG! Evelyn gasped in sudden surprise as her body was forcefully pinned against the ice-cold marble wall. Alex loomed over her, trapping her entirely as his hands locked on either side of her head, caging her within his broad frame. "Are you attempting to seduce me tonight?!" Alex snarled low in his throat, his voice a gravelly, raw rasp fueled by a manic mix of rage and the agonizing longing that had tortured his psyche for the past two weeks. His eyes gleamed with a wild intensity, staring down at Evelyn’s crimson lips with an insatiable hunger laced with bitter hatred. Evelyn exhibited no trace of fear. Instead, she tilted her chin up, locking her gaze onto his with a defiant, chilling tranquility. "Seduce whom? You? Don't flatter yourself, Alex. I executed that performance because I possess a companion who—" "A companion?!" Alex cut her off brutally, invading her space until his breath, heavy with the scent of alcohol, scorched the skin of her face. "Who the hell gave you permission to possess another man, hah?! Forever and always, YOU ARE MINE!" Evelyn let out a low, airy chuckle—a mocking sound that felt like a jagged blade slicing through Alex’s ears. "Yours? Have you lost your memory, Alex? In this exact building, a mere few hours ago, you stood before God and swore your very existence to another woman." Evelyn trailed her supple fingertips sensually across the broad expanse of his chest, draped in his wedding tuxedo, before delivering a slow, heavy push against him. "You are no longer my husband. You are merely an ex-husband who is pathologically obsessed with me, haha," Evelyn laughed, the melodic sound dripping with a cruel, tragic amusement. "How utterly pathetic, don't you think?" Alex’s features instantly hardened into a mask of pure fury. His rage surged past its breaking point at the sound of her dismissive amusement. With a lightning-fast movement, he clamped his fingers around her wrist, pinning her down so she couldn't shift an inch. "You dare mock me?!" Alex growled, his low voice vibrating with tremors. Evelyn cut her laughter dead. The glint in her eyes shifted into something as ice-cold as a winter frost, boring directly into Alex’s chaotic, swirling pupils. "It is hilarious, isn't it? You are the one who cast me out, yet now you act like the person most terrified of losing me," Evelyn uttered, her cynical tone piercing straight through his ego. "I am not playing games when I say I want you, Evelyn! I had a devastating reason for consenting to our divorce!" Alex hissed directly into her face. His breathing came in shallow gasps as he fought desperately to convince the woman who now projected the aura of a complete stranger to him. Evelyn curled her lips into a crooked, lethal smirk that radiated absolute disdain. "The reason was that you were entirely unwilling to forfeit your lavish dynasty, correct?" Evelyn spat, striking his ego with a fatal blow. "You were simply too terrified of poverty, Alex. You preferred a throne and a fortune over defending the woman you claimed to love. So, do not dare play the victim in my presence." The truth of her words struck Alex like a physical blow, brutally stripping away the bitter narrative of 'protection' he had spent weeks hiding behind. Seeing him frozen with his jaw locked tight, Evelyn attempted to wrench her hands from his crushing hold. "Release me! I no longer belong to you!" Hearing that sharp provocation spill from her painted lips, Alex shed the final restraints of his sanity. With a brutal, sweeping movement, he cupped her face in a punishing grip, forcing her to look straight into eyes that were bloodshot with a volatile mix of rage and long-repressed passion. Without a single word of warning, Alex slammed his mouth over Evelyn’s, silencing her with a brutal kiss. There was not a shred of gentleness in the assault. It was a violent strike—a desperate, forced effort to erase the ghost of Jordan’s touch from her waist. Alex devoured her lips with an insatiable, ravenous hunger, as if he were trying to pull the very soul from her body and force it back into his possession. "Mmph," Evelyn let out a muffled groan, her hands thrashing to push against his massive chest, but his strength was entirely overwhelming. Evelyn’s back was pinned mercilessly against the rigid marble wall, the cold stone a stark contrast to the scorching heat radiating from his skin. The sharp scent of alcohol on his breath mingled with his suffocating luxury cologne. The kiss swam with pure, unadulterated desperation; Alex was screaming through the raw brutality of his touch that he would damn well never allow her to slip away from his horizons, even if his own vows now bound him to another. "Mmmph!" Evelyn hammered her fists against his shoulders, but Alex merely pressed his weight further against her, leaving absolutely zero space between their bodies. To Alex, the physical sting on his lip from Evelyn’s sharp bite was completely meaningless compared to the agonizing torture in his heart when he saw her smile at another man. He didn't care if Cindy was actively searching for him at this very second. He didn't care if his father would execute him after this. The only reality his fractured mind registered was that the woman locked in his embrace was the single, indispensable light of his ruined world. After a long moment that felt like a lifetime stretching across the silence, Alex broke the contact of their lips, though he kept her face securely locked between his palms. Their breathing came in frantic, ragged gasps, filling the narrow confines of the space. "Say it again..." Alex hissed in a hoarse, fractured whisper, his lips remaining a fraction of an inch away from her swollen, reddened mouth. "Say it again that you don't belong to me, and I swear I will do far worse than this, Evelyn!" Evelyn took a deep, stabilizing breath, her chest heaving frantically. Yet, rather than shrinking in terror, she leveled him with a look of supreme, absolute detachment—a gaze far more devastating to his psyche than any physical strike could ever hope to be. "You truly have gone completely mad, Alex," Evelyn stated flatly. She used the back of her hand to roughly wipe her lips, aggressively erasing the remnants of his touch. Suddenly, the rhythmic click of stiletto heels echoed down the corridor, approaching the powder room entrance. "Alex? Are you in there?" Cindy’s voice thundered from the hallway outside, causing the air in the room to instantly freeze into ice.
