Chapter 9

1403 Words
The very moment their steps crossed the threshold of the apartment, Alex seemed utterly incapable of restraining himself for a single second longer. Without a word of warning, he spun Evelyn around and pinned her brutally against the firmly shut door. The muffled thud of the wood colliding with Evelyn’s back was instantly drowned out by the wild, ragged sound of his breath. Alex lunged at her. He slaked his thirst in an explosive kiss—scalding, sensory, and heavy with the dark obsession he had kept locked away in the bleakest corners of his heart for the past five months. This was no mere kiss; it was a violent claim of possession. Alex devoured Evelyn’s lips with an intensity that suggested he wanted to strip the very air from her lungs and drag it into his own. Evelyn gasped in surprise, her fingers knotting into fists against Alex’s broad chest, desperately seeking an anchor in the midst of the intoxicating onslaught. Yet, the exact same yearning she had spent months masking behind a facade of hatred began to claw its way to the surface, betraying her logic. Alex’s hands moved possessively; one clawed into Evelyn’s waist, crushing her against him until the physical distance between them ceased to exist, while his other hand snaked to the nape of her neck, burying his fingers deep into her dark hair to force her head closer, deepening the plunge of his lips. Every stroke of his tongue felt like a desperate apology entwined with a lethal threat. The longing he had suppressed for months spilled over without reservation. He swept inside her mouth gently yet demandingly, luring Evelyn back into the labyrinth of emotions that had served as their home for five long years. Evelyn let out a soft groan against his mouth, a sound that sent a direct jolt of adrenaline through Alex’s veins. Slowly, the tight grip of her fists against his shirt unraveled. Her fingers traveled upward, coiling tightly around his neck, pulling him down further. She surrendered to the scorching sensation racing through every nerve, swept away by the intoxicating rhythm of Alex’s game. Beneath the dim, muted glow of the apartment foyer, the two of them seemed to forget that a judge had stripped away their vows. The outside world evaporated; there were only two ruined souls craving each other, destroying each other, yet entirely unable to let go. Alex chased her skin relentlessly, shifting his mouth from her lips to her jawline, before trailing down the column of her neck with burning breaths, murmuring dark, sensual secrets meant only for the silence of the night. "You are mine, Evelyn... forever mine," Alex rasped hoarsely, before sealing their lips once more in a kiss far deeper than before. Evelyn closed her eyes, allowing herself to drown in the embrace of the man she despised and loved in equal measure. Behind the breathless, romantic weight of the kiss, she knew all too well—this was the true genesis of their destruction. Evelyn gasped, the soft expanse of the mattress meeting her back as Alex slowly pressed her down, leaving her splayed in the center of the vast bed they had once shared. Alex’s kisses descended into the crook of her neck, leaving a trail of fire that scorched her skin. Beneath the amber shadow of the bedroom lamp, Alex began to unbutton his shirt, his movements frantic and impatient, his dark eyes locked entirely on the woman beneath him. Alex’s desire had clawed its way to its absolute zenith, but just as he moved to bridge the final distance, Evelyn brought her hands up, pressing them firmly against his chest. "Stop, Alex," Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a calm, authoritative cadence that contrasted sharply with her heaving breaths. Alex froze, his gaze boring into hers, fractured with unvoiced questions and the remnants of a consuming passion. "Evelyn...?" "We are no longer husband and wife," Evelyn whispered, staring directly into the depths of his eyes. She slid her hands away, shifting her body just slightly out of his reach. "I allowed you to kiss me. But as for s*x, I refuse to do it without a commitment." Alex materialized into a statue. The words struck him like a cascade of ice water, forcibly cooling the fever in his blood. He could easily override her defense, but looking at the absolute resolve in Evelyn’s eyes, he knew that crossing that line would only cause her to loathe him permanently. He could not afford to destroy his single chance at reclaiming her. Alex took a long, stabilizing breath, fighting to muzzle the tempest raging within his chest. With a heavy, defeated sigh, he finally relented. He haphazardly fastened a few buttons of his shirt and rolled over to lie beside her. "I’m sorry," Alex muttered, his voice gravelly and raw. Without another word, Alex hauled Evelyn’s body back into his embrace. He locked his arm securely around her waist and buried his face into the crook of her neck, seeking the comfort that had been stripped from him for months. Evelyn went rigid for a fraction of a second, but she ultimately allowed him to hold her. That night, inside the bedroom that stood as a silent testament to their broken marriage, the two of them merely slept side by side. Tangled together in a suffocating quiet, longing and vengeance warred beneath the same blanket. For Alex, the mere presence of Evelyn in his arms was enough to quiet the sirens in his head. But for Evelyn, every heavy thud of Alex’s heartbeat against her back was a stark reminder that her grand symphony of revenge had only just begun. . . The morning light invading the gaps in the curtains dragged Alex back to consciousness. Instantly, his hand swept across the mattress out of instinct, searching for the warmth that had cradled him through the night. Instead, his fingers brushed against cold, undisturbed sheets. Alex bolted upright, his heart hammering violently against his ribs. He snapped his head toward the nightstand and discovered a small note Evelyn had left behind. "Goodbye. Forgive me, but I cannot stay with you. You know yourself—it is far too dangerous for us to remain together." "DAMN IT!" Alex crushed the paper into a shapeless ball. His fury detonated in an instant, utterly obliterating the fleeting peace of the morning. "What the hell do you want from me?!" he roared at the vacant walls. Alex violently yanked at his own hair, frustration gnawing through the remnants of his sanity. "Don't you dare leave me... I SAID DON'T YOU DARE LEAVE ME, EVELYN!" With trembling fingers, he snatched his phone and frantically dialed her number over and over, only for the automated operator's voice to answer him. "I have to reach her. Evelyn... Answer me! Answer!" Alex paced the confines of his bedroom like a caged predator, his eyes flashing with a manic, unhinged obsession. . . Meanwhile, inside a taxi speeding away from the vicinity of Alex’s apartment, Evelyn stared at her glowing phone screen as her ex-husband’s name flashed repeatedly across it. She purposefully chose not to shut the device off; she wanted Alex to suffer the agony of being ignored. "Go mad, Alex. And this time, do not bow to your parents," Evelyn whispered under her breath, her eyes tracking the passing cityscape with an icy detachment. Evelyn rested her head against the cool windowpane, her lips carving into a faint, triumphant smirk. "And I am sorry, but I am not foolish enough to slide back into your arms so easily. Even if a part of me still bleeds for you, I cannot simply welcome you back after the sheer humiliation I endured." Evelyn let out a low chuckle, a sound that stood in stark contrast to the profound grief she used to exhibit. "The new game has officially commenced. Let us see how desperately you will pursue me this time, while you remain chained beneath the shackles of your parents." Evelyn knew that by vanishing into thin air so abruptly, she had delivered the perfect, calculated dose of madness straight to Alex's psyche. She wanted to see exactly how far Alex would dare to wage war against Logan and Madam Viola to reclaim the light he had briefly touched, only to have it ripped away in the blink of an eye.
