Chapter 3

1178 Words
Huang Ren, the "CK guy," was a native of the capital, a minority, and a true "second-generation demolition." Originally, Huang Ren's family of three lived in a small courtyard house within the third ring road. Then, they were compensated with a house outside the fifth ring road and a few million in cash during a demolition project. Huang Ren's father used the money to put down payments on several properties, relying on mortgage loans to cover the payments. Over time, as property prices skyrocketed, the family's assets grew from a few million to tens of millions. However, after gaining wealth, Huang Ren's father divorced and spent his days flaunting his wealth with friends, a habit Huang Ren picked up as well. Having failed to impress Li Qing earlier, Huang Ren assumed she was just playing hard to get. Since the counselor Pan Yu was clearly more attractive in both appearance and demeanor, Huang Ren shifted his focus to her, leading to his earlier comment. When Huang Ren spoke, Pan Yu was momentarily taken aback, while the students reacted in various ways. Li Qing sighed and shook her head in exasperation at Huang Ren. Most of the male students scoffed in disdain, while Zhang Lin, instead of paying attention to Huang Ren, was curious about Pan Yu's response. After a brief pause, Pan Yu glanced at the car outside before shaking her head and saying, "According to the school rules, neither students' nor outside vehicles are allowed on campus. These days, the school has temporarily opened up for the convenience of student registrations, but once that period ends, all vehicles will be strictly removed." Pan Yu's clear and direct words left Huang Ren feeling disappointed. Having failed to impress Li Qing earlier, Huang Ren thought she was just a high schooler pretending to be aloof. He believed Pan Yu, having left campus life behind, would understand the realities of society better. However, her response left him disheartened once again, making him wonder if all women were now this indifferent. Was a Porsche worth over a million yuan no longer impressive? Defeated once more, Huang Ren slinked off the platform. Just then, the sound of an engine revving outside drew everyone's attention. A yellow Ferrari pulled up outside the classroom, executing a perfect drift that nearly grazed the parked Porsche. "Wow, another show-off!" "How can you say that? Look closely, it's a Ferrari!" "Are there really this many rich people in the capital? A Porsche was one thing, but now a Ferrari? This is really opening the eyes of us small-town folks!" "It's not the same. A Porsche might be for show, but a Ferrari means real money!" The sudden appearance of the Ferrari sparked a flurry of discussion among the students, while Li Qing's eyes lit up as she carefully inspected the car's exterior. However, Zhang Lin couldn't shake a sense of unease. After a closer look at the Ferrari's license plate, he sighed and remarked, "Well, isn't this something? Our class seems to have both Wolong and Fengchu..." Wolong and Fengchu? Hearing this, Li Qing immediately felt a twinge of dislike for Zhang Lin. Before that movie came out, "Wolong" and "Fengchu" were positive terms. However, after the film, these names became synonymous with "idiot." Li Qing had initially thought that Zhang Lin, being tall, handsome, and a top scorer in the college entrance exam, would share her clear goals. However, from Zhang Lin's recent remarks, she realized that he was still a naive and arrogant youth. Feeling concerned, Li Qing kindly advised, "Classmate, not all rich people are fools. In fact, according to studies, the average quality of wealthy people is often higher than that of the poor." "So, once you enter university, you should stop being so naive and avoid harboring irrational resentment towards the wealthy..." Irrational resentment towards the wealthy? Is she talking about me? Zhang Lin was taken aback and turned to look at Li Qing in surprise. Seeing the confusion and defiance in Zhang Lin's eyes, Li Qing was about to offer more advice when a boy with dreadlocks and wearing a trendy T-shirt walked into the classroom. Only after most of the students' gazes were fixed on him did he press the lock button on his key fob, causing the Ferrari outside to emit a beep. Feeling satisfied after making his grand entrance, the dreadlocked boy surveyed the girls in the class before turning to Pan Yu and saying, "Hello, classmate. My name is Cai Kun, and we’ll be in the same class from now on. By the way, has our counselor arrived yet?" "I am the counselor," Pan Yu replied coldly, adding, "Cai Kun, since you're here, why don't you introduce yourself to the class?" "You're the counselor?" Cai Kun sized up Pan Yu from head to toe, then shook his head and muttered, "What a pity." Finally, he stood at the front and said, "Hello, everyone. I'm Cai Kun from the capital." "I was delayed because I attended a small luncheon with the dean of our department earlier. I apologize for being late." "A small luncheon?" The mention of this prompted laughter from the boys seated next to Zhang Lin. "You call that a luncheon? What a way to brag!" "Exactly. And with the dean? Does the dean even know who you are?" "Sigh, our class seems to have more and more show-offs. Is this what Qingbei has become?" Their words made Li Qing roll her eyes in exasperation. After glancing at the boys, she lost interest in lecturing them. Confirming that the Ferrari outside was indeed a 488 worth over four million yuan, Li Qing turned to Zhang Lin and said, "Do you see, classmate? This is what irrational resentment towards the wealthy looks like! I'm telling you, such thoughts are extreme and will cloud your judgment of society..." "Are you out of your mind?" Zhang Lin interrupted, clearly irritated. Li Qing was taken aback and was about to argue when Cai Kun on the platform spoke up again, "Counselor, how much does a parking spot cost at our school? I’d like to buy one for my Ferrari!" The same tone, the same showy style. Cai Kun's words immediately provoked another round of laughter from the male students, but Li Qing and a few other girls started to defend him. "What are you all laughing at? What's so funny about this?" "Exactly! Cai Kun just wants a convenient parking spot. Is that so laughable?" "You're just sour grapes because you're poor. It's pathetic!" "A bunch of losers, really..." The girls' words wounded the pride of many boys in the class. Even Zhang Lin felt as though he had been slapped in the face for no reason. Irritated, Zhang Lin glanced at Li Qing, who was now acting like a righteous angel. He decided to retaliate. So, Zhang Lin stood up, drawing puzzled looks from Li Qing and the others, and asked Pan Yu with a smile, "Teacher, can I bring a Cullinan to school tomorrow to show off?" ...
