Chapter 2_ Hilton Bill

Mr. Murphy pulled the door of the car open and gestured for me to go in. “If you would please, go in.” He said. It was irrational to go into the car of some stranger even if he was Hilton Bill’s personal assistant. However, I haven't gotten into any previous troubles except for pickpocketing thus, there was no reason for these people to want to harm me. Moreover, I would never leave until this man gave me the money as he had mentioned earlier. I already gave that fat-mouthed waitress my balance and that needed to be compensated. The night’s chill ran down my spine and I felt my fingertips all cold. Wriggling them together, I turned my gaze to the street where a few people tread now. It was getting late after all and winter was harsh this time with the snow-covered pavement glistening under the dim streetlights and the buildings wearing a somewhat icy veil. In the center of my view was crazed Ms. Sandy glaring at me intensely and when my gaze fell on hers, I saw a glitter of something alientic. It was captivating in a gloomy way and I had to shake it off to regain my composure. If Hilton Bill was sitting in this car and waiting for me, mulling over a crazy woman was close to criminal. I went in the car’s rear door and what welcomed my nose was the rich blend of warm vanilla, subtle notes of leather, and a hint of fresh cedar wood, playfully teasing my nostrils. I could stay in this car for a lifetime and not get tired of this sweat. Regardless, the more pressing element was the figure sitting a seat away from me in the car. The man was sitting elegantly in his impeccably tailored suit which I was damn sure was sewn with the finest of silk. His face was directed onto the street while only a side of his face was all I could see but it was enough to notice his sharp jawline that was adorned with a well-groomed beard. It was rested gently in the palm of his hand, which leaned against the plush window frame. “Ms. Gallagher? Meet Mr. Hilton.” Mr. Murphy’s voice declared and it was only then that I noticed he had climbed into the driver’s seat in the car. True to Mr. Murphy’s introduction, this exquisite man turned his gaze to me and all of my muscles jerked in sync. I could have sworn his eyes were enchanted as they sent a wave of mixed feelings within me. Mixed and overwhelming feelings. I was usually a confident girl, well-versed in the game of the streets and not the type to cower under the gaze of some man. But then again, this wasn't just ‘some man.’ Images of the pictures, banners, and every other media that had portrayed Hilton Bill flashed across my mind. He was recently rated the most eligible bachelor in the country despite having his wedding around the corner. I can still remember how I would overhear other girls gossip about how good it’d felt to get married to Hilton Bill. His fiancee even gained a hate club who were devoted to Hilton Bill and weren't happy to hear that he was getting married soon. I also hated Laura Ace - his fiancee but unlike the other girls who despised her for being Hilton Bill’s fiancee, I thought she had it easy unlike those of us who weren't so lucky in life. My eyes bathed in Hilton Bill’s appearance as his rich fragrance continued to play around my nose. The media ought to be arrested for they have not done justice to Hilton Bill. The pictures were a frolic in my eyes for their qualities weren't to be compared to what my eyes were meeting at the moment. Mr. Murphy spoke again. “Ms. Gallagher, before proceeding with the details of the deal, I want you to know that this conversation can and should not fall into the ears of a third party. If by chance you happen to mention it at the hearing of another, I want you to know that their lives will be drastically taken along with yours.” What the hell was this old man spouting? The threat was just so absurd that I forgot totally about the presence of Hilton Bill who had returned his gaze back to the street and I hollered. I couldn't retain my euphoric voice as I raised my palm in the direction of his face. “Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Now, that's extreme. What's up, man? Why be so serious and —threats?” I tilted my head, awestruck to my very spine. He didn't care though. “You can take this chance to withdraw from this conversation if you are not in line with my condition and walk away. Failure to walk away now means you are agreeing to my terms.” He informed me, looking so mellow about my reactions. What was it that needed this much confidentiality and threat? Leaving the money aside, my curiosity had been piqued the more. I was smarter than allowing myself to be intimidated by threats. I strained my neck his way, my manners going down the drain. Not that I had one anyway. “I haven't followed you all the way here to walk away, Mister, shoot.” I sneered. To my surprise, he took to heart none of my words and just went about his speech. “You live at house 362, Greenwich Square in the heart of this Slum. You live together with your stroked father and family. Your mother is a washwoman. Your brother,” He shifted and turned his gaze my way . “The older one is a drunkard who spends his days in a gambling house. He is the first child of your parents and then, there is you. You are the second child who leaves the house every noon to pickpockets on the streets even after graduating from high school five years, two months, and six days ago. Your two younger ones are twins— a male and a female respectively and are still in middle school.” He finished. I've heard of people who look into the backgrounds of others but not even once have you ever thought someone would be stupid enough to look into mine. There was nothing great about it. What in Zeus’s name was he expecting to find? Alright, that did take me off-guard and also did shock me too. Scratching at nothing in my hair, “Okay, you went through all of that trouble to dig up information about me. What next then?” I scoffed. This time, it was Hilton Bill who spoke. “Check the last notification on the cellphone with you.” It was the first time I’d heard a multi-billionaire’s voice directly speak to me and the impact it left on me… I had no idea if it was the magnetic quality of his voice that was too manly to be true or if it was the weight of his reputation on me. Either way, my lips were sealed, and as though I was under a control pad, I swiped the screen of the phone that I had kept in the pocket of my coat. As he had commanded, I checked the notifications, and my eyes balled out in amazement. ‘You have been credited $1,000,000’ The explanation that was supposed to follow was reverberated from Mr. Murphy. “We have created a new bank account in your name and one million dollars has been credited as a part payment for the job I will reveal soon. Upon the completion of it, another one million dollars will be paid into the same account for you.” In my head was an instant whirlwind of thoughts. What was this about one million dollars being paid to me? I have never in my life owned even one thousand dollars but one million? That was totally impossible. Unless it was possible since this deal was initiated by a billionaire. However, what was the deal about exactly? Mr. Murphy mentioned getting married to Hilton Bill but that was definitely a joke. I wanted to appear unscathed and smart so, I concealed my shock and excitement. If this was true, it meant I had become a millionaire overnight. “What is the job about? I'm in.” I smirked.
