Duncan's POV;
I watched as my future Beta Samuel found his mate. She was so beautiful and looked so happy to see him, he grabbed her hand and led her away, they will probably be mated by the end of night." I smiled to myself. "I'm so happy for him, I hope I'll find my second chance mate one day."
Minutes later I saw Beta Samuel back on the dance floor dancing with a few of the unmated shewolves. I looked to where he brought her and saw the girl looking at him. Her eyes were teary as she watched him dance. I mind linked Sam.
"Whats going on? Did you reject her?"
"Of cource not, look at her she's hot."
"Then why aren't you with her?" I asked confused.
"Because I wanna have some fun first."
I immediately cut off the connection when I heard what he said. "What the f**k was his problem. He wants to have fun with other girls before he's with his mate."
Did he forget how much pain I was in when my mate died." I looked back to where she was standing but she was gone, I searched around the living room and kitchen but had no luck she must have headed back home. I decided I had, had enough of the party and went outside to let my Wolf Onyx out for a run. We shifted immediately and started running and within minutes he brought us to the Lake. I walked to the edge to take a drink, when I heard little whimpers coming from the other end. I slowly jotted up to where the whimpers were coming from, if I had to guess it must have been the Betas mate. When she heard me get closer she was about to bolt, when I mind linked her to stop. She looked back and sat back down.
"Can we shift back and talk?" I mind linked her. She paused for a moment before nodding, she headed behind a tree and I could hear her bones cracking. I went behind another tree and shifted. Luckily we have clean clothes spread out everywhere to change in too. I slipped into a dark blue pair of basketball shorts and waited for her to come back out. A few minutes later she came from behind the tree, in a beautiful light blue dress. Her short shoulder legth brown hair was a little messy from shifting and her face was red and puffy from crying but she was beautiful.
"Hi Alpha." She said in a low voice.
"Maeve right? You can just call me Duncan I'm not Alpha yet." I said with a little smile.
"People call me Mae."
"You have a beautiful name."
A small smile appeared on her face. We sat together on one of the big rocks by the Lake, watching the night sky reflect off the water. We were silent for a few minutes before we started making small talk, about fifteen minutes had gone by when she suddenly clutched her chest.
"Ahhhh." Tears started forming in her eyes.
"Mae are you okay?" I asked placing my hand on her back.
"It hurts!" She cried out.
"Her mate is with someone else." Onyx said in a sad tone.
"How could he do this to her!" I yelled back at Onyx in rage. I stood up and kneeled down infront of her wrapped my arms around her bringing her into my chest, I know my touch couldn't calm her like her mates would, but I could atleast try to comfort her through this. After a few minutes the pain subsided and I could hear her heart rate slow down.
"Mae, why don't you reject him?"
"I dont know, he said he still wants to be with me, he's just not ready yet. I guess I'll have to wait."
"Are you serious?" My voice started to raise. "So your just gonna let yourself experience this whenever he's with someone else? Mae that's stupid!" I was yelling at her now. Her face dropped listening to my words.
"Look I'm sorry, it's just." I sighed while I ran my hair through my dirty blonde hair. "My mate died the day I found her. Two years ago I was traveling with my dad to one of our near by Packs, he was having problems with rogues sneaking in and needed my dad's advice. My mate ended up being one of the Alphas daughters, I had spent not even 5 minutes with her before a Rogue attack happened. I went to help her get all the pups in a safe area, when she ran off. One of the pups was about to be attacked and she went to save it, when two other wolves jumped her from behind. I didn't have time to save her. I would have gone and saved the Pup if she had said something. After watching my mate get killed infront of me, I can't describe the pain I felt. It took alot to move forward. And Sam was one of thoes people who helped me, he knew how much pain I was in. I dont understand how he could do something like this." I felt her hand grab mine.
"I'm so sorry Duncan, that's awful." Her voice filled with compassion. I gave her a small smile in return.
"I'm glad I got the chance to meet her, I'm greatful for the little time we shared." Mae gave me a big smile. "That's so sweet Duncan, maybe Sam is worried to experience that pain too. So he's pushing himself away."
"Maybe. I just hate that's he hurting you."
...
Before we realized two hours had gone by, and I was being mindlinked.
"Where are you?" Sam asked "I've been looking for you."
"We should probably get back to the party." I said getting up and reaching my hand out to help her up. She hesitated for a moment but reached out to grab mine.
"Thanks for tonight." She said giving me a warm smile.
"Anytime Mae." I said giving her a big smile back. Our eyes lingered on each other for a moment, they were beautiful. Like liquid honey with flakes of gold. I couldn't help but be memerized by them, causing my heart to flutter.
Meaves POV;
I had just ran back to the lake when I heard something approaching me, I went to run before I heard. "Stop!" In my head, I sat back down and looked at the large grey wolf ahead of me. Based on his size and stature, I assumed it was Duncan our future Alpha.
"Can we shift back and talk?" He asked. I gave him a small nod before walking over to the bench and grabbing my clothes with my teeth and heading behind a tree. I'm not sure if it's cause I was already in pain, but the shift back didn't hurt nearly as bad this time. I slipped on my blue dress and walked back over to Duncan. He stood there in blue basketball shorts with no shirt on. I started to feel flustered looking at him, he was well built and very strong, with wavy dirty blonde hair that went down to his jaw. He was very handsome, whoever his mate was, was very lucky.
"Hi Alpha." I said in a low voice.
"Maeve right? You can just call me Duncan I'm not Alpha yet." He said with a little smile.
"People call me Mae."
"You have a beautiful name." He stated. I gave him a small smile and walked over to him. We sat down on one of the large rocks watching the night sky dance on the reflection of the Lake. We had talked for a few minutes before pain shot through my chest.
Ahhhh." Tears started forming in my eyes.
"Mae are you okay?" He asked placing his hand on my back.
"It hurts!" I cried out.
Duncan stood up and kneeled down infront of me wrapping his strong arms around me and bringing me into his chest. His touch was soothing but couldn't stop the pain. After a few minutes the pain started to subside and Duncan let go.
"Mae, why don't you reject him?" His words hurt, but they were true.
"I dont know, he said he still wants to be with me, he's just not ready yet. I guess I'll have to wait." I said.
"What a sad thing for us to hear from our mate."
"Are you serious?" His voice started to raise. I looked at him, my eyes widened in shock from his changed behavior. "Everything he's saying is true through. Every time he's with someone your just gonna be in pain." Ulta said. I knew she was sad, I was too. I didn't expect him to, but he opened up about the loss of his mate and the pain it caused him.
"I'm glad I got the chance to meet her, I'm greatful for the little time we shared." He said looking fondly. I gave him a big smile, it warned my heart to hear him say that. Even though the amount of pain he experienced he was still so greatful.
...
We had talked for hours before he stood up.
"We should probably get back to the party." He said reaching his hand out. I reached out and grab his hand.
"Thanks for tonight." I said giving him a warm smile as I stood up.
"Anytime Mae." He said giving me a big smile back. Our eyes lingered on each other for a moment, his beautiful blue eyes sparkling like the stars. My heart fluttered for a moment.
