CHAPTER4

Are you sure something's not wrong?” Ryan asked persistently. He was driving the car while the two warriors who had accompanied us sat at the back. "Watch out!" I suddenly shouted, and a huge vehicle flashed past us; luckily, Ryan had evaded to the side. It was still a close call. "Sorry about that,“ He apologized. “Watch where you're going,” I snapped, my heart still racing. Ryan opened his mouth to speak but he thought better of it and fell silent. I secretly felt guilty for snapping at him. It wasn't Ryan who wanted to give me to the Alpha King. It was Father. I was only just trying to transfer my frustration onto Ryan. I silently stared at the note, a stab of pain flashing through me. Could I say no?... I could, I thought, but I wouldn't. That treaty was too important. It was what would determine our fate. We couldn't go against Rogues. There were some of the most dangerous beings in our world. Since they didn't have a pack, most of them did not operate by any laws followed by the rest of us. They were not only morally depraved, but they took what they wanted and hurt when they wanted. And they were what my pack would soon be against if something wasn't done. The realization that I didn't have a choice made my throat feel heavy. I had this urge to scream and cry out the pain and helplessness I felt. Maybe, this was the reason Father couldn't tell me. He had felt helpless too. But I didn't want this. I didn't want anything to do with a man. Not anymore. Not ever. Not after my heart had been torn apart and shredded to pieces by the people I trusted the most in the world, Caleb and Gabrielle. I still couldn't believe it, and sometimes I found myself thinking it was a dream. Maybe I would wake up and find out it was all a nightmare, some sort of cruel joke played on me by the Goddess. But I knew this was real life, and all of these was real. This was my life being ripped away from me, taken away from me without having a say. I was nothing more than someone needed to seal a bargain. A contract Luna not just to anyone, but to the Alpha King — a man whose name struck terror in the hearts of wolves far and wide. How was I to cope? How was I to live with a man I barely knew? I wiped away a tear that had fallen unconsciously. Crying wouldn't help me. It couldn't. I stared at the paper squeezed in my palm and felt a stab of anger suddenly. Why did I have to do this? Why? I owed them nothing. This was a pack that had ostracized and shunned me because they believed I had been responsible for my mother's death so why then did I have to sacrifice myself to save them? Why did I have to be their savior? But would I let them just die like that — despite what had happened to me in their hands? Could I let them? I felt torn into two places. A huge part of me wanted to help them, but there was a part of me that felt resentful, that felt angry. Goddess, what was I to do? Suddenly, Ryan turned to me. “Your boyfriend - Caleb. Did you tell him about this?” At the mention of the name, I felt another sharp pang of pain in my heart, but I managed to reply, “I didn't tell him. There was no time.” Ryan nodded. “Fair enough. You'll be back in no time anyways.” His words made me realize that he didn't know I was to be given to the Alpha King as bride. It would seem father hadn't revealed his plans to anymore. Behind us, suddenly, two motorcycles appeared from nowhere with loud deafening roars. “The f**k?” said Ryan as he looked at the memory o his mirror. “s**t, they're trying to run us down! Brace yourself!” shouted one of the warriors. “Who are they?!” I asked as I scrambled to get off the seat and fold myself onto the floor instead. “Rogues! They're rogues! Look!” My heart did a drop into my stomach as I saw them ahead. There were a lot of them — wicked-looking men with dangerous weapons, ignoring the fact that they were dangerous weapons. There was no way we would survive in a fight with them. “Don't stop, Ryan!” I urged. “Don't stop! Keep driving!” But that plan was brought to a halt when two of the rogues suddenly leaped and landed on the roof of the car. “f**k, f**k, f**k!” Ryan yelled as he lost control of the car and crashed into a tree.
