My lungs burned from the chilly night air as we ran through the forest. With an urgency that made my heart race even more, Ethan's hold on my hand was unwavering. The noise of footsteps from behind us intensified, serving as a horrifying warning of the peril we were facing. "Ethan, what are we running from?" My question came out barely over the thump of my heart. "Lucien's men," he said in a stern whisper in response. "Ava, they want to take you. They believe that you hold the secret to their survival. "However, why? What do they so desperately want that I have?" Desperate for answers, I persisted. A flicker of worry and frustration crossed Ethan's eyes. Ava, you are powerful. a force capable of shifting the world's equilibrium. Lucien thinks he can control that power by dominating you." We stopped in a little clearing, and Ethan turned to look at me, a serious expression on his face. You're ignorant of a great deal, Ava. About us, about you. But once we're safe, I swear I'll explain everything." The sound of footsteps intensified before I could reply. Ethan shoved me behind a big tree and looked around, searching for any movement in the shadows. His voice is firm. "Stay here," he ordered. "I'll handle this." Watching him move stealthily through the shadows, his body taut and prepared for battle, made my heart race. I pressed myself up against the tree, panic and confusion whirling through my head. With an intensity that left me speechless, Ethan lunged at a figure that materialized out of the shadows. With their movements a blur of strength and speed, the two men grappled. Though I knew I would only be a liability, I still wanted to help. Rather, I was horrified to see as more people started to emerge from the shadows and encircle Ethan. The cards did not favor him, heroic as he tried. One of the men struck Ethan, causing him to stagger and bleed heavily from a cut on his side. "Ethan!" Lost in terror, I let out a scream. With a fierce look of determination in his eyes, Ethan turned to face me. "Ava, run! Leave this place now!" I paused, caught between my own survival and my fear for Ethan. But I knew there was nothing left to do as more men drew near. I turned and ran, my heart pounding in my chest. I had the impression that the forest was closing in and that darkness was consuming me. Despite hearing the sounds of the struggle from behind me, I forced myself to move forward out of a basic survival instinct. My breath caught in my throat as I abruptly staggered into another clearing. An imposing figure towered over the clearing in the center, his eyes gleaming with an unusual light. He said, his voice smooth and menacing, "Hello, Ava." "I've been expecting you." The moment I recognized who he was, my blood froze. Shouting in a tremulous voice, "Lucien," The smile on Lucien's face was icy and menacing. "My dear, you've given me a lot of trouble. But everything will work itself out now that I have you." I pulled back, panic and desperation rushing through my head. "What do you want from me?" Trying to keep my voice steady, I demanded. Lucien grinned more broadly. "Ava, you are powerful. a force that will guarantee our existence. And whether you like it or not, I plan to use that power.” Lucien lunged at me before I could respond, his hands encircling my arms in an iron grip. I made an effort, but he was too powerful. "Let me go!" I cried out, fear taking over my body. However, Lucien merely chuckled, his eyes shining with sly satisfaction. "Ava, you are now mine. Furthermore, there is nothing you can do to alter that. I had given up hope when I heard a familiar voice break through the shadows. "Get your hands off her, Lucien!" After emerging from the shadows, Ethan's body was bruised and smashed, but his spirit remained intact. With a savage roar, he launched himself at Lucien, and the two men engaged in a struggle of wills and strength. With my heart in my mouth, I watched as Ethan gave it his all in the fight. Even as Lucien's men surrounded us, he persisted without giving up. Abruptly, the clearing was flooded with blood, and a person moved forward, his presence overwhelming and commanding. The figure bellowed, "Enough!" as his voice reverberated throughout the forest. With shock and fear in their eyes, Lucien and Ethan froze. The figure turned to face me with intense, piercing eyes. "Ava, you have to accompany me. This place is unsafe." I paused, not knowing who this newcomer was. However, there was a comforting look in his eyes, and I felt myself moving forward. , me "Who are you?" My question was barely audible above a whisper. With a gentle and comforting grin, the figure grinned. "I am Alexander, the Lunaris Pack's leader. I'm also here to support you." I dared not look back at Ethan as Alexander ushered me out of the clearing. When our eyes locked, I knew our journey was far from over. For now, though, I had to put my trust in Alexander. He represented my only chance to comprehend my own power and my destiny in this perilous, mysterious world. With the tension from the recent confrontation still very much in the air, we walked in silence. Thoughts of questions raced through my head, but I forced myself to ignore them in favor of moving forward step by step to a remote cabin after what seemed like an eternity. I entered after Alexander pushed open the door, appreciating the warmth that greeted us. "Sit." Alexander gestured toward a chair close to the fireplace. "You must take a nap. You've experienced a lot." I took a seat, feeling the warmth of the fire gradually remove the cold that had crept into my bones. Alexander sat down across from me, his face contemplative. "Why did you come for me?" My question was barely loud above a whisper. Alexander's eyes remained fixed. "Because Ava, you matter. greater significance than you may think. In addition, you have a right to know the truth." With my heart thumping in my chest, I forcefully swallowed. "What truth?” Leaning forward, Alexander fixed his gaze on mine. "Ava, you play a crucial role in our universe. Your ability and potential have the capacity to alter everything. Lucien wants to have control over you because he is aware of this. But I refuse to allow that to happen." As soon as the tear dropped to my cheek, I wiped it away. "What level of ability do I possess? Why do I matter so much?" Alexander's face became more amicable. "Ava, you're a unique kind of werewolf. One endowed with powers unseen for centuries. You are a protector and a healer. And you have the potential to grow into one of the most potent creatures on the planet with training." His words caused my mind to spin. "A healer? But I don't feel powerful. I feel...lost.” Alexander extended his hand and rested a comforting hand on my arm. "I realize it's a lot to process. But you must have faith in me. Have faith that your strength exceeds your awareness." I nodded as a glimmer of hope appeared inside of me. "What do I need to do?" Warm and encouraging, Alexander smiled. "You must first get some rest. Your training will begin tomorrow. Just know that you're safe here for the time being. You are surrounded by friends." I sensed a wave of relief as I sank into the chair after finally defeating my tiredness. But I kept thinking about Ethan while I slept. His bravery and his resolve to keep me safe stirred something deep inside of me. I was aware that our journey was far from over and that our paths were intertwined. Knowing that a new chapter in my life would begin when I woke up. I allowed myself to give in to the darkness after having that thought.
