7 The color drained from my face. “Death? Who’s death?” Shade stooped and picked up the disc. He straightened and his attention fell on my hands. “The disc has been used not to capture smells, but to imprison souls.” “Oh god. . .” I whispered as warm tears sprang to my ears. Shade grasped one of my hands in his and captured my eyes in his bright gaze. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have allowed you to touch it.” My eyes widened. “You. . .you knew what was going to happen? That that. . .that thing would come out?” He nodded. “But I didn’t see that come out when you held it.” “I witnessed it, but I’ve seen horrors which were greater than a bodiless tortured soul.” My face fell. “I’m sorry.” He dropped my hand and half-turned away with the disc still grasped in his taloned hand.
