11 I crossed my arms over my chest and continued to give him the evil eye as we traveled down the narrow hall. Shade had to bend forward to keep his head from scraping the ceiling, but tiny bits of moss still caught onto his hair. By the time we reached the mouth of the tunnel his hair resembled that of a troll doll and smelled like seaweed. The light proved to be an exit from the tunnel and we found ourselves at another door grate like the one that had protected the church, and with the same efficacy. Shade set me on my feet and leaned me against the wall before he grasped the bars with both his hands. He wrenched the grate forward and a horrible complaint came from the hinges as he pushed it aside. Shade turned back to me, but I gave him my best cold stare. “I’ll walk,” I insiste
