18 I hurried out of the room before an argument could erupt and sailed through the kitchen and out the side door. The cool, refreshing scent of night greeted me and a slight breeze kissed my cheeks as I followed a short stone path to the high stone wall that surrounded Ferrer’s well. I paused at the wall and leaned over the top. The water stood only a few feet below the ground and its still waters reflected the sky above me. I gazed up at the blinking stars, searching for the familiar. None of the constellations I knew were there, twinkling down at me like old friends giving a wink. I pressed my balled hand against my chest and bowed my head. “What am I doing here?” I whispered to myself as I closed my eyes. You’re trying to help these people.
