Chapter 14: The Boardroom War

992 Words
The boardroom of Sterling Acquisitions had never felt this cold. Elena walked in first. Her heels clicked against the polished floor, steady and controlled, even as the tension in the room pressed against her like a physical force. A long table stretched across the center. Every seat was filled. Executives. Board members. Observers. All of them watching. Waiting. Adrian followed a step behind her, already back in his role as CEO—calm, composed, unreadable. No one spoke as they entered. That silence said everything. Something had already happened. Elena took her seat at the center of the table. Adrian remained standing for a moment before pulling out a chair beside her. Not too close. Not too far. Professional. Calculated. Victor Hale sat at the far end of the table. Watching them. Smiling faintly. “Elena,” he said smoothly. “Thank you for coming on such short notice.” Elena met his gaze without hesitation. “I assume this isn’t a courtesy meeting.” Victor’s smile widened slightly. “No.” He tapped a file in front of him. “This is about your audit.” The room seemed to tighten. Elena leaned back slightly. “Then let’s proceed.” Victor nodded. “Very well.” He gestured toward one of the assistants. A large screen at the front of the room lit up. Elena’s stomach tightened slightly— But her expression didn’t change. Because she already knew what she was about to see. Data logs. Access records. Time stamps. Her credentials. Used at 2:48 a.m. Exactly as Mark had said. A murmur spread across the room. One of the board members spoke first. “Ms. Rossi… would you like to explain this?” Elena folded her hands calmly on the table. “There’s nothing to explain.” The room went quiet. Victor tilted his head slightly. “Nothing?” Elena’s voice remained steady. “My account was compromised.” Victor let out a soft laugh. “That’s a convenient claim.” “It’s a factual one.” Victor leaned forward slightly. “The system logs show no external breach.” Adrian spoke for the first time. “Then your system isn’t as secure as you think.” Several heads turned toward him. Victor’s smile faded just a fraction. “Mr. Vance,” he said. “This matter concerns Ms. Rossi.” “It concerns my company as well,” Adrian replied calmly. “Your audit determines the future of Vance Dynamics.” The tension in the room sharpened. Elena didn’t look at Adrian— But she felt it. He was standing with her. Publicly. Dangerous move. Victor noticed it too. “Interesting,” he said slowly. “The CEO seems very invested in the auditor’s defense.” Elena finally spoke again. “Focus on the evidence, Victor.” Victor’s eyes returned to her. “Oh, I am.” He tapped the table once. The screen changed. Now showing internal audit notes. Edited. Modified. Manipulated. All under Elena’s credentials. “This,” Victor said calmly, “suggests that you altered the audit findings.” A ripple of tension moved through the room. Elena felt every eye on her. Judging. Waiting. Watching for weakness. She gave them none. “I didn’t alter anything.” Victor leaned back in his chair. “Then someone wants us to believe you did.” “Yes.” “And why would someone do that?” Elena held his gaze. “To control the outcome of this merger.” Victor smiled faintly. “That’s a bold accusation.” “It’s an accurate one.” A senior board member spoke up. “Ms. Rossi, are you implying internal sabotage?” “Yes.” “Do you have proof?” Elena didn’t answer immediately. Because this— This was the moment. The line between control and collapse. She could feel Adrian’s presence beside her. Steady. Waiting. Trusting her to play this correctly. Elena exhaled slowly. Then she said something that shifted the entire room. “I believe someone on this board is involved.” Silence. Complete. Absolute. Every person at the table went still. Victor didn’t move. Didn’t blink. But his eyes darkened slightly. “That’s a serious claim,” he said quietly. Elena didn’t break eye contact. “I don’t make unserious claims.” The tension in the room became unbearable. Then— Victor smiled again. Slow. Controlled. Almost impressed. “Very well,” he said. “If that’s your position…” He reached into his folder. And pulled out another document. Elena’s eyes narrowed slightly. Because something about the way he moved— Felt final. Victor placed the document on the table. Then slid it across— Toward Adrian. Not her. Adrian looked down at it. His expression changed. Just slightly. But Elena noticed. “What is it?” she asked. Adrian didn’t answer immediately. Victor leaned back in his chair. “Go ahead,” he said softly. “Tell her.” Adrian looked up. His eyes met Elena’s. And for the first time since she met him— She saw something she had never seen before. Uncertainty. “Elena…” he said quietly. Her pulse tightened. “What?” Adrian exhaled slowly. Then said the one thing she didn’t expect. “This document…” He paused. “…proves you were assigned to investigate my father’s company.” Elena froze. The room went silent again. Victor’s voice cut through it like a blade. “Eight years ago.” Elena slowly turned her head toward Victor. Her expression no longer calm. No longer controlled. Now— Dangerous. “What are you doing?” she said quietly. Victor smiled. “Connecting the past to the present.” The trap had just changed. This wasn’t about the audit anymore. This was about her history. Her credibility. Her truth. And Adrian was sitting right in the middle of it. Forced to choose. Between her— And everything he believed for years.
