The silence between them didn’t feel the same anymore.
It wasn’t just tension now.
It was history.
Adrian stood a few feet away from Elena, the old photograph still open on his phone. His grip tightened slightly as he stared at the image again—his younger self, his father… and Elena, standing across the street like a stranger who had unknowingly changed his life.
“You remember everything,” he said quietly.
Elena didn’t look away.
“Yes.”
Adrian let out a slow breath.
“I spent years trying to forget that day.”
His voice wasn’t angry.
That made it worse.
Elena stepped closer—but stopped before crossing the space between them.
“I didn’t know who you were when I walked into your office,” she said.
“I believe you.”
That surprised her.
“You do?”
Adrian nodded once.
“You don’t lie about things that matter.”
Elena held his gaze.
“That’s a dangerous assumption.”
“Maybe,” he said.
“But I’m willing to take the risk.”
The words lingered between them.
Risk.
That’s what this had always been.
From the moment they met.
A dangerous, unpredictable risk.
Elena folded her arms slowly.
“Then you should also understand something.”
Adrian tilted his head.
“I’m listening.”
“I won’t apologize for doing my job.”
His jaw tightened slightly.
“I didn’t ask you to.”
“But you’re thinking it.”
Adrian didn’t answer.
Because she was right.
A part of him still held onto that old anger.
The memory of watching everything fall apart.
But another part of him—
The part standing here now—
Was seeing something different.
“You said my father thanked you,” Adrian said.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Elena hesitated.
That alone told him the answer wasn’t simple.
“He already knew the truth,” she said finally.
“And you still won’t tell me what that truth is.”
Elena looked down briefly.
Then back at him.
“Because I don’t have proof.”
Adrian frowned.
“That’s not like you.”
“No,” she admitted.
“It’s not.”
The room fell quiet again.
Outside the glass walls, the city continued moving like nothing had changed.
But inside—
Everything had shifted.
Adrian stepped closer.
This time, Elena didn’t step back.
“Eight years,” he said softly.
“Yes.”
“And somehow, we ended up on opposite sides again.”
Elena’s voice dropped slightly.
“Maybe not opposite.”
Adrian studied her carefully.
“Then what are we?”
The question hung in the air.
Elena didn’t answer immediately.
Because she didn’t have a clear answer.
Not anymore.
Not after everything she had just learned.
“Complicated,” she said finally.
Adrian let out a quiet breath.
“That’s one way to describe it.”
He was close now.
Closer than he should be.
Closer than she had allowed before.
But neither of them moved.
“Adrian,” she said softly.
“Yes?”
“You said earlier that you didn’t trust anyone in this building.”
“I don’t.”
“Then why are you trusting me?”
Adrian didn’t hesitate this time.
“Because you could have destroyed me already.”
Elena blinked.
“What?”
“You have access to my company’s weaknesses,” he continued.
“You could finish the audit, submit the report, and walk away.”
“That’s my job.”
“Yes,” he said.
“But you didn’t.”
Elena’s heartbeat shifted again.
Because he was right.
She hadn’t.
Somewhere along the way—
This stopped being just another assignment.
“Maybe I’m just curious,” she said.
Adrian smiled faintly.
“You’re never just curious.”
Elena almost smiled.
Almost.
But then—
The office lights flickered.
Both of them froze.
The laptop screen went black for a second—
Then turned back on.
But something was wrong.
Very wrong.
The screen wasn’t showing her files anymore.
It was showing a video.
Live footage.
From inside her office.
From the camera under her desk.
Elena’s expression hardened instantly.
“They’re watching us.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“They’ve been watching us.”
The video zoomed slightly.
Focused on them.
Standing close.
Too close.
Elena stepped back immediately.
Creating distance.
But it was too late.
Whoever was watching had already seen everything.
Then—
A message appeared on the screen.
White text.
Simple.
Cold.
“Interesting partnership, Ms. Rossi.”
Elena’s stomach tightened.
Adrian stepped forward, his voice low.
“Can you trace it?”
“I’m trying.”
Her fingers moved quickly across the keyboard.
But the system wasn’t responding normally.
“They’ve locked me out.”
The message on the screen changed.
“You were supposed to destroy him.”
Elena froze.
Adrian looked at her.
Then the final line appeared.
“Now we’ll destroy both of you.”
The screen went black.
Complete silence filled the room.
Adrian slowly turned toward Elena.
“This just became personal.”
Elena met his gaze.
Her voice was calm.
Cold.
Dangerous.
“It always was.”
But this time—
They weren’t just playing a game anymore.
They were the targets.
