Chapter 7: The Morning After

921 Words
Elena Rossi woke up earlier than usual. That alone irritated her. She was a woman who controlled her schedule with precision. Every meeting, every call, every moment of her day was planned in advance. But this morning her mind refused to stay quiet. Adrian Vance. The thought of him appeared again the moment she opened her eyes. Elena sighed and sat up in bed. Sunlight filtered softly through the large windows of her apartment, painting pale golden lines across the wooden floor. She glanced at the clock. 6:12 a.m. Too early. But her brain was already replaying the events of the previous night. The secret investigation. The hidden financial trap. The way Adrian had looked at her in the elevator. She shook her head slightly. “Focus,” she muttered to herself. This was business. Nothing more. Nothing less. Elena stepped out of bed and walked toward the kitchen, tying her hair into a loose knot as she moved. The quiet apartment felt calm compared to the chaos inside her thoughts. She poured herself a cup of coffee and opened her laptop on the kitchen counter. Time to work. If someone inside Sterling was planning to frame her, she needed to move faster. Her fingers began moving quickly across the keyboard. Financial reports. Audit records. Internal communication logs. But something strange caught her attention almost immediately. An email. Sent at 3:17 a.m. From someone inside Sterling’s executive board. Her eyes narrowed slightly. The subject line read: Urgent: Audit Update Required Elena opened the message. Her expression slowly changed as she read the contents. Because the email contained a direct request. A request for her to finalize the preliminary audit report today. That was impossible. The investigation had barely begun. No serious firm would demand a report this early. Which meant— Someone was rushing the process. Someone needed the investigation to move quickly. Elena closed the laptop slowly. “So that’s your move,” she murmured. Her phone buzzed suddenly on the counter. Unknown number. Elena answered calmly. “Yes?” A familiar voice spoke. “Good morning, Elena.” She froze for half a second. “Adrian.” “You sound surprised.” “It’s early.” “You were already awake.” “How do you know that?” “Because you’re predictable.” Elena rolled her eyes slightly. “What do you want?” “I assume you checked your email already.” Her expression sharpened immediately. “You know about the message.” “Yes.” “How?” “Because I received a call from Sterling twenty minutes ago.” Elena’s grip on the phone tightened slightly. “What did they want?” “They asked if my company would cooperate with an accelerated audit.” Elena laughed quietly. “Accelerated.” “That’s the word they used.” “So they’re rushing both sides.” “Yes.” Elena leaned against the counter. “They’re setting the stage.” “For the collapse,” Adrian finished. Silence hung between them. Then Elena asked quietly, “What’s the play?” Adrian’s voice lowered slightly. “We let them think the plan is working.” “You want to pretend we don’t know?” “Exactly.” Elena considered it. It was risky. Very risky. But also effective. “And while they think they’re winning,” she said slowly, “…we gather evidence.” “Yes.” Elena exhaled softly. “Dangerous.” “Very.” She took another sip of coffee. “Alright.” Adrian sounded amused. “That was easier than expected.” “I enjoy destroying traps.” “I’m starting to see that.” Elena glanced at the time again. “Where are you?” “Driving.” “To where?” “Your office.” Her eyebrows lifted. “You’re coming here?” “Yes.” “Why?” “Because if we’re going to pretend everything is normal…” His voice softened slightly. “…we should arrive at work together.” Elena felt something unexpected in her chest. Not fear. Not irritation. Something warmer. “You’re enjoying this far too much.” “Maybe.” Her voice became firm again. “Remember the rule.” “Which one?” “No touching.” Adrian chuckled quietly on the other end of the phone. “We’ll see.” “Elena.” “Yes?” “Someone is watching this investigation very closely.” “I know.” “Which means we have to play our roles perfectly.” “And what role are you playing?” Adrian paused briefly before answering. “The loyal CEO.” “And me?” “The ruthless auditor.” Elena smiled faintly. “That part is easy.” Adrian’s voice dropped slightly. “I know.” She ended the call and looked out the window toward the city. Somewhere out there, someone believed they were about to destroy her career. That thought made her smile slightly. Because Elena Rossi didn’t just survive traps. She dismantled them. And this time— She had an ally. Whether she trusted him completely or not. Meanwhile, several floors above the main office of Sterling Acquisitions, a man sat quietly in a dark conference room. He closed the laptop screen in front of him. On that screen had been a live security feed. Showing Elena Rossi’s office. He smiled slowly. “Perfect,” he whispered. Because everything was moving exactly according to plan. Even the parts Elena didn’t know about yet.
