Chapter 16: Cracks Beneath Control

733 Words
The message appeared just as Elena stepped out of the boardroom. “He trusts you now. Perfect. Phase 2 begins.” Her steps slowed. Just slightly. But Adrian noticed. “What is it?” Elena didn’t answer immediately. Her eyes were locked on the phone screen, her expression unreadable. “Elena.” She turned the screen toward him. Adrian read the message. His jaw tightened instantly. “They’re watching again.” “Yes.” “They expected this outcome.” “Yes.” Adrian let out a slow breath. “That means this entire meeting…” “…was part of their plan,” Elena finished. They stood in the hallway, the noise of executives moving around them fading into the background. Because right now— Nothing else mattered. “Phase 2,” Adrian repeated. “That doesn’t sound good.” “It isn’t.” Elena slipped her phone into her bag. “We need to move carefully now.” Adrian stepped closer. “We were already being careful.” “Not enough.” She started walking again, faster this time. Adrian followed. “Where are you going?” “My office.” “Why?” “Because if they’re escalating…” She pushed open the door. “…they’ve already made their next move.” The moment she stepped inside— She stopped. Adrian almost walked into her. “What—” Then he saw it. Her office— Was destroyed. Files scattered across the floor. Drawers pulled open. Laptop missing. The chair overturned. Like someone had been searching for something. Or sending a message. Elena walked in slowly. Her heels no longer steady. Now— Measured. Dangerous. “They’ve crossed the line,” Adrian said quietly. Elena didn’t respond. She moved toward her desk. Her fingers brushing over the empty space where her laptop had been. Then— She noticed something. A single file. Placed perfectly in the center. Too clean. Too intentional. Adrian saw it too. “Don’t touch it,” he said. Elena ignored him. She picked it up. Opened it. And froze. Adrian stepped closer. “What is it?” Elena didn’t answer. She turned the file toward him. Inside— Was a contract. Old. Signed. Stamped. And at the bottom— Two names. Elena Rossi. Adrian Vance. Adrian frowned. “What the hell is this?” Elena’s voice dropped. “This…” She swallowed slightly. “…is impossible.” Adrian took the file from her. Reading quickly. His expression darkened. “This says we worked together before.” Elena shook her head. “No.” “That’s what it says.” “It’s fake.” “Is it?” Elena looked at him sharply. “Yes.” But something in her voice— Wasn’t completely certain. Adrian noticed. “You’re hesitating.” “I’m thinking.” “About what?” Elena took the file back. Her fingers tightened around it. “About how much of my past has been manipulated.” The room felt colder. Because suddenly— Nothing was reliable anymore. Not the audit. Not the system. Not even their memories. Adrian stepped closer again. “Elena.” “Yes?” “If they can rewrite your past…” He paused. “…what else can they control?” Elena met his gaze. Her voice steady. “Only what we let them.” Adrian held her eyes. “And what are you going to do?” Elena closed the file slowly. Then said— “We stop reacting.” A pause. Then— “We start hunting.” Adrian smiled slightly. Dangerous. “That’s more like it.” But before either of them could move— Elena’s phone rang again. Unknown number. She answered. “Speak.” A distorted voice replied. Cold. Mechanical. “You’re asking the wrong questions, Ms. Rossi.” Elena’s eyes hardened. “Then give me the right ones.” A pause. Then— “Ask Adrian Vance what really happened the night his father died.” The call ended. Silence. Heavy. Explosive. Elena slowly turned toward Adrian. His expression— Had completely changed. No confidence. No control. Just something dark. Something buried. “Adrian…” He didn’t answer. “Adrian,” she repeated. This time— He looked at her. And for the first time— She saw fear. --- Cliffhanger: What happened the night Adrian’s father died… and why is it connected to Elena?
