Iris’ POV:
I froze.
His eyes darkened as he stared at me while Charlotte continued rambling, oblivious to the situation.
“This is my friend, Alaric,” Charlotte said before she lightly tapped his arm.
My eyes went wide a fraction when I noticed the contact. Did Alaric really allow that?
My eyes moved between both of them as I tried to figure out what their relationship really was.
I bowed my head a bit as I played with my fingers.
When was he going to leave? I had to look for a way to get Charlotte to be alone before she blows my cover.
“And Alaric, this is-
“Charlotte,” I called quickly and stood on my feet.
Alaric tilted his head to the side before his eyes moved to my daughter.
“Please, come with me.”
I locked my hands in hers and dragged her away. I could feel Alaric's eyes on us as we walked a few distance but didn't dare turn back to look.
“What's up?” She asked innocently.
I let out a deep breath and briefly glanced at Alaric. He was now sitting on my chair and was staring deeply at Tiara.
What was his stress?
“Please… can you not call my name around him?”
I stared at her.
She stared back then opened her mouth.
No words came out but it was enough for me to realise. She was confused.
“Why?” She finally asked.
I looked behind her, racking my brain so hard to look for an excuse but none came.
“I-
“Don't you work under him from time to time?”
I nodded slowly then let out a deep breath. Was I supposed to tell her?
“Well, the issue-
“Charlotte,” Alaric called and my blood went cold.
I wasn't so sure but I could feel him standing directly behind me and this was the closest we've been apart from the time in the car.
“What's up?”
That was so casual.
I didn't dare turn around and quietly stared at Charlotte. Her shrub seemed to have a coffee stain on it which meant she didn't go home last night.
“I need to leave now.”
His voice seemed to bounce in my head with how deep it sounded. Was it really possible for a voice to be soft and stiff at the same time? I guess Alaric made that possible.
“Okay then,” Charlotte said and soon enough, the warmth behind me disappeared.
I let out the breath that I didn't know if I had been holding and Charlotte narrowed her eyes at me.
I looked away immediately, wondering what I could tell her to stop the conversation that might follow.
“Let's get coffee,” she said and yawned.
I nodded as I thanked God with my whole heart.
“About Tiara, I think she'll be okay for the next few days.”
“Oh,” I replied as I punched the button on the elevator.
That was definitely not good news and Charlotte was just trying to be nice about it.
I took a gulp of nothing as I stared at my reflection on the elevator. I was in my own world while Charlotte was… being Charlotte.
“I heard their heir got married,” a person said and it piqued my interest.
They couldn't possibly be talking about Alaric, right?”
“Even his family members didn't know about it,” another person commented and confirmed my fear.
I let out an exasperated sigh when I realised that everyone around me wouldn't stop talking about him. At this point, my whole life revolved around him.
“You think that's crazy? He married a freaking gold digger!”
I couldn't help but wince internally since they weren't wrong. I married him for the money after all.
“Nah,” Charlotte said with a lopsided smile.
It might look like a harmless one but I knew her well enough to know that she was pissed.
“He would never allow a nobody to play him,” she added and I subtly shook my head.
Yay! Thank you so much, Charlotte.
Surprisingly enough, a few people nodded in agreement.
“Bye,” Charlotte waved at everyone in the elevator as we stepped out.
So much of a social butterfly.
“Should I get you your usual?” Charlotte and I nodded.
She went ahead of me, skipping a bit as if work wasn't hectic enough for her.
I couldn't help but chuckle loudly as I watched her go.
There was something about Charlotte that made me stick to her and it was definitely not the way she packed her curly wild hair in a weird bun.
I dipped my hands in my pocket as I stood beside her, letting the smile still sit on my face.
At this point, I was fighting against sleep because I still had a long day. And yeah, I was still wondering the lies I would feed Alaric at home.
This was so f*****g weird.
“I really need to start drinking chamomile instead,” she commented and I raised a brow.
She didn't seem to notice at first and when she did, “Someone said it's way better.”
“As a nurse, I thought you would have figured that out.”
Charlotte placed her head on her hand that rested on the counter and stared at the barrister.
“I know but he keeps bringing me here,” she said with a sigh.
I slowly looked between her and the barrister, “Charlotte!”
She mouthed a ‘what” and continued staring. It was really hard to keep the laughter that threatened to come out.
The last thing I wanted was for the barrister to think we were gossiping about him.
At first, nothing was on my mind as I accepted the drink and even thanked Charlotte since she had just saved me some money.
However, when it finally clicked, I froze and the smile on my face got wiped off.
Charlotte had talked about Alaric not as a doctor but as an heir as if she knew him.
As if she knew that Alaric wasn't just a random doctor but an heir.
My eyes fell on Charlotte who was ranting about something I had zoned off on.
How much more does she know?
