I didn’t leave the room. Even after his words sank in and felt real my feet wouldn’t move.
It consumes. The phrase kept echoing in my head like a warning I couldn’t shut off.
“You’re quiet, " he said. I took a breath and looked at the symbols carved into the walls. "They feel alive, " I said quietly. "Like they’re watching." "They are." I stiffened a bit. "That’s not comforting." "It’s not meant to be." Of course it wasn’t. Nothing about this was.
I turned to face him again and folded my arms like that would steady me. "You said I called power from you " I said. ". That I felt something… older." I paused. ". Tell me the part you’re still not saying." His gaze held mine, measured and calculating. "You weren’t the one who felt something that night." My heart skipped a beat. "What does that mean?" "It means, " he said calmly, "you didn’t just awaken your power." He took a step closer. "You triggered mine." The air shifted a bit not violently. Enough for me to notice.
“That doesn’t make sense, " I said quickly. "Why would my power affect yours?" "Because they’re connected." There was silence, sharp and immediate. "No " I shook my head. "You said mine was rare. Ancient. Buried." "It is." "Then why would you have anything to do with it?" For the time he hesitated, not long, but long enough.. That was all I needed to know.
“You do, " I said quietly. "You’re not an Alpha." His gaze darkened a bit. "No." My chest tightened. "Then what are you?" There was a pause. Then "The reason your power didn’t destroy you that night." The words landed like a weight in my chest. "That’s not an answer." "It’s the one you’re getting for now." Frustration flared. Beneath it something else grew, understanding, not complete, not clear, but enough.
“You felt me first, " I said slowly. His silence confirmed it. My pulse quickened. "That’s how you found me." "Yes." This time there was no hesitation, no avoidance, truth. "I didn’t just stumble into your territory " I continued, piecing it together. "You came looking for me." "I followed the surge.". If you hadn’t?" There was a pause. "You’d be dead." Simple cold honesty. I swallowed. Part of me wanted to push for more answers.. Another part knew I wasn’t ready for them yet.
That night felt different, not quieter, not calmer, just heavier like something had shifted beyond what I could see. I stood by the window staring out into the darkness of the territory. The pack moved as it always did, controlled, precise, unaware or pretending to be. Because now I wasn’t so sure. "You’re thinking loudly." I didn’t turn. "I didn’t realize that was possible." "Everything about you is possible, " he replied. That didn’t feel like a compliment.
“What now?" I asked. "More training? More secrets?" "Both." A small humorless smile touched my lips. "Of course." I finally turned to face him. ". The part where this ‘ancient power’ consumes me?" I added. "When does that happen?" His gaze didn’t waver. "That depends on you." That wasn’t reassuring. "It’s not meant to be." A beat of silence passed. Then "You need to learn " My brows drew together. "Faster than this?" "Yes." "Why?" He didn’t answer immediately. That alone told me everything.
“Something’s coming " I said, not a question. His silence confirmed it. "What?" I pressed. "A reaction." "To me?" "To your power." A chill ran down my spine. "You mean others can feel it too?" "Yes." That wasn’t good, not good at all. "How long?" "Not long." My heart started to race. ". When will they come?" This time he didn’t hesitate. "We’ll be ready.”
Far beyond the borders of any known pack the forest stood unnaturally still. No wind, no sound, just silence. A figure stood at the center of it watching, waiting. "You felt it too, " a voice murmured from the shadows. The figure didn’t move and didn't respond, but the air around them shifted slightly unsettled. "It’s awakening " the voice continued, quieter. "After all this time…" A slow breath. Then "She’s alive." The words carried something not relief not surprise, something darker interest.
“Find her, " the voice said. A pause. ". This time…" The shadows seemed to deepen, twist. "…Don’t let anyone else claim what belongs to us." Back in the territory I felt it again that pull, stronger, than before. But this time it wasn’t reaching for him it was reaching outward. Something else had noticed me. Somehow I knew things were about to get worse.
