Chapter 10: The First Threat

1226 Words
I felt it before anyone said a word. A shift. Wrong. The air wasn’t just heavy anymore… It was tense. Like the entire territory had drawn a breath. Forgotten how to let it out. I stopped in my tracks, my chest getting tight. “You feel that too, " I said quietly. He was already looking at the forest. “Yes.” That was all he said. It was enough. “What is it?" I asked. “Not rogues.” My stomach dropped a little. That didn’t sound better. Before I could ask more, a sharp howl cut through the air. Not a warning. Not fear. A signal. Everything changed in an instant. The calm territory I had gotten used to shifted into motion. Wolves moved quickly, precisely and coordinated. There was something new now. Alertness. Readiness. Danger. “Stay here, " he said. I let out a breath. “You can’t be serious.” His gaze flicked to me sharp. “You’re not ready.” “And hiding me is supposed to fix that?” “It keeps you alive.” “So does learning to fight back.” A pause. Tension flickered in his eyes. Then “Fine.” That one word carried weight. “Stay close, " he added. “I wasn’t planning on running into danger ” “That would be a mistake.” I almost said everything about this is a mistake. The ground beneath my feet pulsed faintly. The power inside me stirred. Not wild. Not out of control. Aware. It felt like them. Whatever was coming. We reached the edge of the territory in minutes. The forest loomed ahead dark and still watching. Too still. A group of wolves stood at the line, tense eyes fixed on the trees. No one moved. No one spoke. Then They stepped out. Not many. Three. Something about them felt… wrong. My breath caught. “They don’t smell like rogues, " I whispered. “They’re not.” His voice dropped a little. “Then what are they?” The three figures moved forward slowly and deliberately, stopping beyond the boundary line. Close enough to be seen Close enough to feel. Their eyes scanned the territory landed on me. Every instinct in my body screamed. They’re here for you. A slow smile spread across the face of the one in the center. “Well " he said, his voice carrying easily across the distance. "That didn’t take long.” My chest tightened. “You know them?" I asked under my breath. “No, " he replied. His posture shifted a little. More alert. More dangerous. “They know you, " he added. That wasn’t comforting. At all. The man’s gaze never left me. “Interesting, " he continued. "You don’t look like much.” A flicker of anger sparked in my chest. I took a step forward Instantly a hand closed around my wrist. Firm. Unyielding. “Not yet, " he said quietly. “I’m not hiding behind you.” “You’re not ready to stand in front of me ” I clenched my jaw. I didn’t pull away. Not this time. Not when everything in the air felt like it could snap. “You felt it didn’t you?" the stranger called out tilting his head a little. "That little spark in the forest…” My heart skipped. He did feel it. “How more?" I whispered. “Enough " he said. The stranger chuckled softly. “No point pretending, " he added. "When power like that wakes up… it doesn’t stay hidden.” His eyes darkened a little. “It calls.” The word is different now. Because I understood it. I had felt it. Apparently… So had they. “She doesn’t belong to you " the stranger continued, his gaze shifting briefly to the Alpha beside me. "You’re the one who found her first.” A subtle shift in the air. Dangerous. Quiet. But sharp to cut. “Leave, " he said. One word. It carried something deeper than authority. Something heavier. The stranger smiled wider. “No.” The tension snapped. “Then you’ll be removed.” The calm in his voice was gone now. Replaced with something Final. The three figures didn’t move. Not immediately. Instead the one in the center took another step forward. “. If we refuse?” Silence. A breath. Then “Try.” Everything exploded at once. The ground cracked beneath my feet as the air itself seemed to split open. The wolves around us surged forward. They weren’t fast enough. The attackers moved first. Too fast. One of them blurred past the line Straight toward me. My heart slammed against my ribs. I didn’t think so. Didn’t hesitate. I reacted. The power surged instantly stronger than before. “Stop!” It burst out of me in a wave The air twisted And the attacker was thrown back mid-stride crashing into the ground with a force that echoed through the clearing. Silence fell for a split second. I even froze. I did that. The man on the ground. Didn’t stay down for long. He pushed himself up slowly, wiping blood from his mouth. Then He smiled. “You see?" he said, his voice almost amused. "Told you she was worth finding.” My chest tightened. That wasn’t fear in his voice. That was exciting. “Again " the Alpha beside me said. I blinked. “What?” “Don’t hesitate.” Another attacker moved Faster this time. Stronger. I felt it before I saw it. The power surged again. Sharp. Mine. I pushed it forward This time with intent. The impact hit harder. Cleaner. More controlled. The attacker staggered back. Didn’t fall. Stronger. They were stronger than rogues. “Enough.” His voice cut through everything. Then He moved. I barely saw it. One second he was beside me The next He was in front of them. The air around him warped violently. Not like mine. Not unstable. Controlled. Dominant. One of the attackers lunged Was stopped mid-air. Frozen. Like something had caught him by the throat. My breath caught. The Alpha didn’t touch him. Didn’t even move. The pressure I could feel it from where I stood. Crushing. Unavoidable. “ chance, " he said quietly. The man in the center stared at him for a moment. Slowly… His smile faded. “…so it’s true " he murmured. Something unspoken passed between them. Something I didn’t understand. Not yet. “Noted," the man added, lightly stepping back. "We’ll leave… for now.” The pressure vanished instantly. The frozen attacker dropped to the ground gasping. “ time " the man said, his gaze flicking back, to me "we won’t be so polite.” Just like that They were gone. The forest swallowed them whole. Silence returned. It wasn’t the same. Not anymore. My heart was still racing as I turned slowly. “What… were they?” He didn’t answer. His gaze remained fixed on the forest. Watching. Waiting. “Proof.” I frowned. “Of what?” He looked at me. For the first time since I met him There was no calm in his eyes. Only certainty. “That this has already begun.” A chill ran through me. Because down… I knew exactly what he meant. This wasn’t over. It hadn’t even really started.
