A Place I Don’t Belong

The first thing I felt was warmth. It was soft and steady and safe. It did not make sense. I thought I was dreaming because warmth was not something I was used to. I had just been thrown out of my life. Nothing about warmth belonged to that life. I slowly opened my eyes. The ceiling was above me. Not the open sky. Not darkness. Just a ceiling. I was disoriented. My gaze was shifting as I tried to understand where I was. The room around me was unfamiliar. It was large and quiet and dimly lit by a glow. The bed beneath me was too comfortable to be real. It was too clean and too peaceful. My body tensed instantly. This is not right. I pushed myself up quickly. Pain shot through me. I collapsed back against the bed. My entire body was protesting the movement. My chest. My limbs were weak. It was like I had been drained of everything that made me whole. Memories came rushing. The ceremony. The rejection. The rogues. Then Him. The Alpha. My breath caught. I whispered faintly "I am not dead." A voice came from the corner of the room. It was low and calm and familiar. My head snapped toward it. My heart was racing. He was there. Leaning against the wall like he had been there alone. Watching me. Always watching me. My pulse quickened as our eyes met again. In the light the Alpha looked more dangerous. He looked like something carved from shadow and control. Every inch of him radiated power. It was quiet but overwhelming. I tried to speak. My voice faltered. "Where am I?" I asked. The Alpha said, "My territory." That did not help. Fear curled in my chest despite the warmth of the room. "Why?" I asked more sharply than I intended. "Why bring me here?" The Alpha's gaze did not waver. "You were dying, " he said. That did not explain anything. I said, "That does not explain anything." The Alpha paused. Then he straightened slightly. Stepped away from the wall. The movement alone made the air feel heavier. It was like the room had shrunk around him. "It explains enough, " he said. I forced myself to hold his gaze. I said, "People do not just save strangers. Not out there." The Alpha said, "True." I asked, "Then what do you want?" There was silence between us again. I thought he would not answer. Then he said, "You." My breath hitched. The Alpha said, "Your power. What you did in the forest... That was not normal." Heat flickered faintly in my chest at his words. It was like a memory trying to resurface. I said quickly "I did not mean to. I do not even know how it happened." The Alpha said, "That is the problem." Something about the way he said it made unease settle deeper into my bones. I said, "You think I am dangerous." The Alpha said, "I think you have no idea what you're " The words sent a chill through me. Before I could respond the door opened quietly behind him. A woman stepped in carrying a tray. She paused when she saw me awake. She said softly "You are conscious." Her voice was gentle and careful in a way I was not used to. She said, "Drink this. It will help with the pain." I hesitated. Everything in me screamed not to trust them. My body was too weak to argue. I slowly reached for the cup with trembling hands. The Alpha watched the time. Not speaking. Not moving. Just observing me. The liquid was bitter but grounding. As I swallowed I felt a slight ease spread through my chest. It dulled the edges of the pain. I murmured faintly "Thank you." The woman gave a nod before stepping. She said, "I will return later " and glanced briefly at the Alpha before leaving the room The silence that followed felt heavier than before. I placed the cup down carefully, my fingers still shaking. I asked, "Are you going to keep me? " The Alpha said, "Yes." The answer came quickly. Too easily. My chest tightened. I said, "I did not agree to that." The Alpha said, "You were not in a position to." Anger flickered weakly beneath my exhaustion. I said, "I am not a prisoner." The Alpha said, "No. You are not." I asked, "Then what am I?" The Alpha did not answer immediately. Instead he took another step closer until he stood beside the bed. He looked down at me with that intensity. He said, "An opportunity." The word sent unease crawling through me. I pressed, "For what?" The Alpha's gaze held mine for a moment before he finally spoke. He said, "To become something more than what they made you believe." My heart stuttered. I did not want to believe him. I did not want to hope. Something inside me... Something quiet and fragile... Shifted. I whispered, "I do not belong here." The Alpha agreed softly "No." Then his eyes darkened slightly. He said, "But you did not belong there either." The truth in his words cut deeper than I expected. Before I could respond, exhaustion hit me all at once. It was heavier than before. My vision. My body sank back into the bed. The Alpha said, "Rest." Not a command. Not entirely. My body listened anyway. As my eyes slowly closed one last thought lingered in my mind. I did not know who the Alpha was. I did not know why he saved me. For the time since that night... I was not alone, in the darkness. Somehow... That scared me more than anything.
