When I woke up something felt different. The pain was still there. It was not as sharp as it was before. It was like the pain was not controlling my every move anymore.
I sat up slowly trying not to push my body hard. The room was quiet and warm just like it was before.. It was too quiet.
My eyebrows came together slightly. Where was everyone? In Kael's pack, mornings were always busy. There were always people talking, wolves running around and guards moving.. Here there was nothing. Just silence.
A soft knock on the door broke the silence. The same woman who was here before came in. Nodded at me. "You are recovering quickly, " she said.
"I feel better, " I said, even though my voice was still weak. "Where is everyone?"
She hesitated, which made me feel uneasy. "They are training, " she said. "Most of the pack is outside."
Most of the pack, not all of them. I swung my legs over the side of the bed. Stood up trying to ignore the pain in my body. "I want to see, " I said.
The woman looked unsure. "I do not think that is an idea, " she said.
"I am not a prisoner am I?" I asked quietly.
She paused, then nodded. "Stay close to me, " she said.
When I stepped outside I understood why everything felt different. The air felt heavier like there were rules that everyone had to follow.
I looked around the training grounds. There were dozens of wolves moving in sync, fighting and running. Every move they made was sharp and controlled.
Then everything stopped. The wolves all. I looked down. They were not looking at me though. They were looking past me.
I did not need to turn around to know who was there. I could feel it.
I turned around. He was standing behind me. He was silent and watching me. His face did not show any emotions. Everything around him felt tight and controlled.
"Continue, " he said calmly.
Everything started moving. The wolves went back to their training. I was left standing there feeling a little shaken.
He walked past me. Said, "Walk." It was not a command. It felt like one.
I followed him. As we moved through the territory I noticed how the other wolves reacted to him. They did not look him in the eye. They did not talk unless he talked to them first.
Even the strong wolves kept their distance. It was not respectful though. It was fear.
"Your pack is different, " I said quietly.
"They are disciplined, " he said.
"That is not all, " I said.
He did not respond, which made me more curious.
We turned a corner. I heard two warriors talking. "...If she really awakened that power..." one of them said.
I slowed down trying to listen. "Then he was right, " the other one said. "But that means..."
"Lower your voice, " the first warrior said. "If the Alpha hears..."
"I am just saying... No one survives that bloodline without a reason."
My heart skipped a beat. Bloodline? What did they mean?
Before I could think they saw me. Stopped talking. The silence was heavy and uncomfortable.
I asked them what they were talking about. They did not answer. They just looked at me with guarded expressions.
His voice appeared out of nowhere. Final. "Enough."
The warriors looked down. Stepped back. He was looking at me, his eyes fixed on mine.
"You should not listen to conversations that are not meant for you, " he said.
I stood my ground. "Then stop having them where I can hear, " I said. "What bloodline?"
He did not answer. Instead he said, "You are asking the question."
I felt frustrated. "Then what is the right question?"
He stepped closer, his eyes sharp. "What are you?"
The question hit me hard. I did not know what to say.
"I do not know, " I admitted quietly.
For a moment something shifted in his gaze. It was not a surprise or doubt though. It was like confirmation.
"Your power, " he said. "What you did in the forest... It has not appeared in generations."
My chest felt tight. "I did not mean to, " I said.
"It does not matter, " he said calmly. "People who carried that power... Did not live long."
A chill ran down my spine. "What does that mean?"
"It means you are either very lucky... Or very dangerous."
My breath caught. Before I could respond he turned away. The conversation was over.
My mind would not stop racing. Bloodline, power, danger... None of it made sense.
That night I could not sleep. Every time I closed my eyes I saw the moment in the forest. The surge of power the way everything bent around me.
My chest felt tight. Something was not right.
I sat up slowly. Pressed my hand against my heart. "Stop..." I whispered.
The warmth spread, stronger this time. Hotter. My breath quickened as a pulse shot through me.
The air. The room trembled. "No."
The glass on the table rattled violently. The curtains lifted without wind. The heat burned.
"Make it stop!" I cried out my body tensing as the energy surged out of control.
The door burst open. He was there. His eyes locked onto me taking in everything.
He did not look surprised. He looked certain.
The energy pulsed again then stilled. Just like that. As if his presence alone forced it back.
My breathing came in gasps as the power faded leaving me weak and shaking.
"What... Is this happening to me?" I whispered.
He did not answer immediately. He just stood there watching me with that intense gaze.
Then finally he spoke. "So it is true..."
My heart dropped. "What is?"
Silence. Then his eyes darkened slightly.
"The thing they should have feared... Was never your weakness."
The words sent a chill through me. Because down I was starting to believe him.
