Chapter 5

This… is not what I’ve expected. How did I ever forget that my family is only in a middle class and mother needs to personally manage the flower shop by herself?! And now I am stuck in the middle of this by small shop, letting myself get dirty by constantly picking, moving, decorating the flowers myself?! And how did I even manage to decorate such a beautiful bouquet even though I never even tried it before?! Maybe its just my muscle memory, or maybe I am just smart.

I sat on the floor, not even caring of getting dirty even more and fan myself. The sweat makes my hair sick at my own skin which makes it even hotter. Who said that flower decorating is an easy task? It is beyond exhausting especially if the orders are by bulk! Since flowers easily dried so fast, we needed to make them all on the day of the delivery to make it fresh.

Mother approached me and handed me a white handkerchief, it was neat and it smells so good. It has a very flowery fragrance, and it looks very elegant.

“Here, wipe your face Syne. We’ve got a whole day to finished these orders.”

I couldn’t help but to frown at what she said.

 “There’s still more?”

She laughs as she saw my frowning face, she looks really young especially when she’s laughing. Now I know where ‘Mnemosyne Javier’s genes come from.

“It’s a good thing that a lot of people comes here again Syne, we almost got bankrupt three months ago and our business reputation got bad in an instant. Thankfully, your best friend Gilbert invest his fund to our flower shop, it saves our asses”

I stop wiping my sweat and turn my heads towards mother, she was busy picking the tray of roses and so I stood and help her with the remaining trays.

“He… did that?”

I ask as I put the tray on the table. Mother flashed a smile on me and flicked my forehead. I squeak because of the pain, how can a woman like her flicked so hard?!

“You are always his baggage even since you are still a kid, he is like your knight in shining armor, ready to protect and fight for you.”

I couldn’t help but to felt cringe. I never had a boy best friend in my entire life, or even a friend or an acquaintance. Boys in my life had given me either headache or heartache, and hearing this for the first time felt very uncomfy. Though it is very nice to hear that there is a person who cherished me a lot, but the thing is… I am not the woman who he befriended with, and I’m afraid that he will instantly know that I am a different person.

“You make it sounds like his world revolves around me.”

I was just kidding when I said that but mother just shrug her shoulders and smiled. There is something about her smile that make me anxious, is… the ‘Girlbert’ she mentioned… likes ‘Mnemosyne Javier’?

Ohh.. hopefully it’s not.

“His world ‘almost’ revolves around you, but he has business now. He is quite busy ascending his fathers’ steps, their family business is not a joke and should be taken care of.”

I pulled a chair and put it beside mother to let her rest for a while, she thank me before sitting down while massaging her own nape. Father is not here with us this time, because he needs to personally deliver the bouquets to the North. Speaking of which, why do father need to deliver it himself?

 “Do you want me to massage you, Mother?”

“No, just continue what you’re doing. I’m going to rest for a bit, please do entertain the guests for a while, Syne.”

“Yes, mother.”

I did agree but I totally do not have any idea what I’m so supposed to do. I was a former CEO back then, not a regular employee and facing the costumers myself tires me off. Even so, I am not a CEO now, we do have business but we cannot hire an employee because of the costumer’s preference, well thankfully we do have in our farm.

I looked at the window to see what’s the activity outside. There are a lot of people gathering at the center now, a lot of small merchants displayed their products on the center. People are having a good time buying their desired items while children are busy playing and goofing around. I haven’t been on the outside for so long since I’ve arrived in this world and seeing them happily enjoying their lives takes me back when I was still young.

I remember when mommy and daddy had always forbid me to go and play outside. My favorite nanny always sneaks me outside and let me play like a normal kid would do. Well, we were found our later on and she was instantly got fired. I felt very guilty of what happen but as a young child, I could not do anything to defend her and myself.

Thinking about the past makes me sad, and makes me realize that my parents never really showed me their love even from before.

My heart felt tightens, like I’ve just pulled the trigger that caused a trauma unto my heart.

I shake my head and went to the corner to get a spray and a book. I put some water on the spray bottle before I went to the flower display.

It’s not time to think about the past, it’s over now.

I sprayed some water on the flowers that was being displayed while I was holding and reading a book which contains flower references. I was so preoccupied of what I was doing to even noticed that someone was already beside the flower pot.

As soon as I glance at the thing next to the flower pot, I was beyond surprised of what I saw.

“Ahhh!”

I squeal so loud and gripped the spray that was on my hand to tightly. And to my surprise, I accidentally sprayed at the persons face! The water was dripping to his face, running down to his clothes. I was panicking that I even lost my grip to the book on my left hand which causes it to fell down right… to his toes.

“ARGH!”

He screamed out of pain and jump out of shock. He was holding is pained toes while his shoulders are shaking. I noticed his clothes are made of expensive materials, it even has small gold linings which made me pale.

I felt like my blood instantly drains and my body felt cold.

I could not believe of what I just did to this person! He is clearly a nobleman! He might be from a very influential family! What would I do if he decides to sue me?! What if he’s from a… from a Royal family?! Would he chop of my head?! Oh, my goodness!

“AAHH! I’M SO SORRY!”

I pulled the handkerchief that mother gave to me earlier and carelessly wipe it to his wet face and clothes. It was too late when I realize that I also wipe my sweat using the same handkerchief! I was too afraid to even say it so I just… forgot about it like it didn’t happen at all.

“What happened, Syne?!”

Mother rushed towards us and I immediately run towards her. Her face and eyes are still puffy, clearly a sign that she was asleep when this incident happen.

“I… I…I think I’m going to die.”

“what? Why?”

“Because I… I”

“It was nothing to worry about, Auntie.”

We turned our heads towards the man, he was now standing straight right in front of us, he looks perfectly fine. I release my breath that I was holding just now, I almost forgot how to breathe because of what happened, I think this is the first time I felt nervous because I was intimidated of the persons social status.

I walk towards him and examine his whole body to see if there’s something serious injury, thankfully I did not find any.

“Are you ok now, sir---”

“Ohh my! It’s Gilbert!”

Mother screamed in joy as he approached the young man and hug him without hesitation! The man laughs as he also hugs my mother so tightly like they really miss each other. My jaw almost drops because of what I saw. He is someone mother knew?

“When did you arrive?”

“We arrived here in the Capital yesterday, I wanted to visit you earlier but we still have things to do. You know how strict my father is.”

“Ohh! Frederick hasn’t changed at all huh, now his restricting his only son.”

“Business is one of our priority Ma’am, couldn’t help it”

They both laugh and continue talking, I could not follow to their topic because I don’t really recognize the man. It’s my first time seeing him and he’s an actual noble man in this era. Maybe I should just be thankful that he is someone mother knew, he could just let the accident go.

I tap my chest lightly, trying to calm my raging heart because of a sudden nervous breakdown. This body is so fragile, I need to take extra care of it.

I glance at where mother and the man are, to my surprise; the man was already staring at me blankly. He looked at me from head to toe before he finally smiles. His silver hair seems like its swaying naturally and his clear brown eyes was almost sparkling. This man has a very good physique, I can guess that he is very famous to a lot of woman.

“It’s been a while, Syne”

I was shocked when he mentioned my name, I looked at him deeply thinking of what to say. Who is he? Does he know me because I am mother’s daughter?

I looked at mother and signaled her about the man in front of me. She then realizes what was happening and immediately approached us.

“Uhmm… Syne, this man is Gilbert, Gilbert Huasson. Do you perhaps recall him?”

Gilbert? Why does his name sound familiar? I felt like this isn’t my first time hearing his name. I looked at him carefully, so this man may be also acquainted with ‘Mnemosyne Javier’. I wonder what kind of relationship they had, are they close? Like the best friend of Mnemosyne…

Wait.. Did mother just call him… Gilbert Huasson?

That Gilbert Huasson who is Mnemosyne’s best friend?! That once commoner to wealthy merchant Gilbert Huasson?! No wonder he looked at me from head to toes!

Did he notice something?

“Gilbert!... my…best of…friend!”

I tried myself to sounds enthusiastic but I guess I failed because I saw him covered his mouth as he laughs at me. I wanted to get angry because it feels like he’s making fun of me, but at the same time I don’t because seeing a lovely man laughs is like a therapy in the eye.

I was forcing myself not to get mad so I just laugh with him. I guess he just noticed my irritation, he cleared his throat and spoke. He was still suppressing his laugher though.

“It’s a good thing that you still recall me, after… what happened”

He was hesitant for a bit, seems like what happened to ‘Mnemosyne’ is really a big deal. They are so careful not to mention about the suicidal attempt, that’s why for the past few days I never heard them talking about the incident anymore. I guess they don’t want to trigger some of my memories.

“I… actually don’t remember anything, my past, my present, even the places and… the people”

“Ohh..that;s… thant’s ok”

He looked very sad,

I looked away and pressed my fingers, here we go again. The guilt is slowly drowning me, I could not even meet their eyes anymore. It’s much easier if only I also possess ‘Mnemosyne Javier’s memories, but I did not. So, telling them about having amnesia is the best option I’ve got for now.

“Anyway, I heard that you are my knight in shining armor! Ready to fight and ready protect me at all cost!”

Even though I sound stupidly childish, this is the only way to lighten up the mood. Which is actually effective! He smiles mischievously, I sense danger. Without a word; he suddenly clung his arms to my neck and put his own body weight on me.

“What the f...!”

I protest at what he did and slapped his arms but he was not even bulging! Instead, he put his weight on me even more!

“Waaah!”

“That’s your punishment for doing something to stupid! You stupid Mnemosyne”

Mother laughs at what Gilbert did to me and even cheered him to put his weight on me even more! I almost cried because of what they did to me.

What a childish punishment!
