A Dangerous Comfort

925 Words
Sleep didn’t come easily. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw it again— Xavier. The rejection. The way he chose my sister. My chest tightened painfully as I turned on the bed, clutching the sheets. Why did it still hurt this much? Why couldn’t I just forget? A soft knock pulled me out of my thoughts. I sat up slightly, my body still weak. “Come in,” I said quietly. The door opened, and a maid stepped in, carrying a tray. “Alpha Lucien asked me to bring you this,” she said respectfully, placing it on the table beside the bed. Food. I hadn’t even realized how hungry I was. “Thank you,” I murmured. She nodded and quickly left the room. I stared at the tray for a moment before reaching for it. But the moment I took a bite— A sharp pain shot through my chest again. I gasped, dropping the spoon. “Ah—!” The bond. It was happening again. Stronger. More painful. Tears filled my eyes as I clutched at my chest. “Why… won’t it stop…” I whispered. My breathing became uneven, my body trembling. Then— The door burst open. Lucien. His eyes immediately locked onto me, dark and alert. “What happened?” “I—” I winced. “It hurts…” He was beside me in an instant. His hand pressed gently against my back, pulling me slightly toward him. And just like before— Warmth spread through my body. The pain began to fade. Slowly. Steadily. Until I could finally breathe again. I sagged slightly against him, exhausted. “This is getting worse,” he muttered. I swallowed hard. “Why is this happening to me?” His jaw tightened. “Because the bond was broken violently.” My fingers curled weakly against the bed. “It feels like I’m dying…” “You’re not,” he said firmly. I looked up at him. His expression had changed. Less cold. More… focused. Concerned. “You’ll survive,” he added. “I’ll make sure of it.” My heart skipped at his words. There it was again. That strange feeling. That pull toward him. Dangerous. Confusing. “Why are you helping me?” I asked softly. “You don’t even know me.” He didn’t answer immediately. His gaze lingered on mine for a moment too long. Then— “Because I want to,” he said simply. That wasn’t a real answer. But somehow… It felt like enough. I shifted slightly, realizing how close we were. His arm was still around me. Holding me steady. My breath caught. “Lucien…” “Yes?” “You can let go now.” He didn’t. Instead, his hold tightened slightly. “Not yet.” My heart started racing again. “Why not?” His eyes darkened. “Because the moment I do…” His voice dropped lower. “…the pain might come back.” I hesitated. He wasn’t wrong. But still— “This is… strange,” I admitted. A faint smirk appeared on his lips. “You think?” I frowned slightly. “I mean it.” “So do I.” The room fell quiet. But it wasn’t uncomfortable. Not entirely. There was something else. Something unfamiliar. Something that made my chest feel tight in a completely different way. I quickly looked away. “This doesn’t make sense,” I whispered. “I had a mate.” His expression hardened slightly. “Had.” The word hit again. Sharp. Final. I swallowed. “But this… this connection with you…” I trailed off, unsure how to even explain it. His fingers moved slightly against my arm, grounding. “It’s real,” he said. I shook my head. “No… it can’t be.” “Why not?” “Because things like this don’t just happen,” I said. “Not like this. Not so fast.” His gaze didn’t waver. “Maybe you just don’t understand it yet.” “Or maybe it’s wrong,” I countered. Silence. Then— He leaned closer. Slowly. Intentionally. My breath hitched. His face was inches from mine. Too close. Way too close. “Does it feel wrong?” he asked quietly. My heart pounded. I couldn’t answer. Because the truth was— It didn’t. And that scared me more than anything. “I…” I hesitated. He watched me carefully. Waiting. Searching. “I don’t know,” I finally admitted. Something flickered in his eyes. Something dark. Something satisfied. “Then we’ll figure it out,” he said. Before I could respond— A sudden loud knock echoed through the room. Both of us turned toward the door. Lucien’s expression immediately hardened. “What is it?” he called. The door opened slightly, and one of the guards stepped in. “Alpha,” he said urgently. “There’s a problem.” Lucien’s eyes narrowed. “What kind of problem?” The guard hesitated. Then— “Alpha Xavier is at the gates.” My heart stopped. Everything inside me froze. No… He came here? Lucien’s grip on me tightened. And the look on his face— Turned deadly. “Let him in,” he said coldly. My breath caught. Wait… what? “Lucien—” But he was already standing. His expression dark. Dangerous. “Stay here,” he ordered. My heart pounded in fear. Because something told me— This time… Things were about to get much worse.
